Industry Day Script
Pump Station #2
- Located near the main gate, pump station #2 provides the main source of water to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS). The system consists of (3) 60-hp motors rated for 1900 GPM each and a chemical feed station. The pumps are engaged when the city of Cocoa’s water pressure drops below a certain point (approximately 67 psi).
Trident and Poseidon Wharf
- Naval submarines and surface ships are berthed at these wharfs which are under the custody of the Naval Ordnance Test Unit (NOTU). Trident submarines berth here in preparation for demonstration testing of launch systems. There are also British vessels and occasionally vessels that dock here for a multitude or reasons including R&R.
- Army/Air Force Outport wharf supports supply of downrange sites. Has refrigerated storage.
MOCC and Generator Plant
- Morrell Operations Center is a key player for all activity leading up to and including launch. Most Air Force military and civilian personnel reside here during launch preparations and during launch itself. The key function is final clear to launch and the mission flight control officers who are responsible for following flight path and assuring vehicle is within launch parameters.
- Generator plant can provide power during Florida Power & Light (FPL) outages and can power to the grid if needed. There are 5 1500KW generators.
NOTU and MACA
- The Naval Ordnance Test Unit is the user for most of the facilities in the south cape area. The missile assembly and check out area (MACA) is used for all types of support for naval submarines and trident missile systems.
- The Trident Plant is a pretreatment facility that processes shipboard, bilge and missile tube wastewater. After processing the effluent from these waste streams, it is pumped to the Regional Waste Water Treatment Plant (RWWTP) for final treatment and disposal.
Space Museum
- The Space Museum is located just south of Lighthouse Road and west of launch complex (CX) 17. The NASA portion of the Space Museum is located on CXs 5 and 6 adjoining the Air Force portion of the Space Museum at CX 26.
Demineralized Water Plant
- The demineralized water plant is located at CX 18 and provides demineralized water, via tanker truck, on an as-needed basis to several CCAFS tenants. The average production is 1,500 gallons per month. The plant produces grade AA water for various users including nuclear submarines, laboratories and payload processing facilities. The plant has on-site storage for 10,000 gal and additional 21,000 gal in Trident/Poseidon area. The by-product of production is used to neutralize launch deluge water before it is processed through the RWWTP.
Area 59
- Area 59 is used to process and store payloads prior to launching. The Defense Satellite Communication System (DSCS) Processing Facility, or DPF and the NAVSTAR (GPS) Processing Facility, or NPF have 100,000 class clean rooms where pre-launch activities are conducted. They also have toxic propellant servicing capabilities, cranes and UPS and generator backup power.
- The Satellite Alert Facility (SAF) is designed to house encapsulated Space Vehicles (SVs) and to withstand Category V hurricane winds and associated storm surge. It is also has a 100,000 class clean room and a backup generator.
Skid Strip
- The CCAFS skid strip is used for delivery of launch vehicle components, drone testing and the occasional dignitary flying in for short durations.
Industrial Area (R&D, XY, E&L, A&E)
- Industrial area is the heart of CCAFS for logistics, launch support activity and the majority of personnel administrative spaces. There are multitudes of storage warehouse, BOS repair and construction shops and the majority of civilian, military and DoD contractors’ offices are here.
- Hangar R & D will be the main CLOIS contractor facility
- Facility 60600 is the Civil Engineering (CE) building
- E&L building is where the contracting officer resides
- Hangar AE is a launch critical facility owned and operated by NASA
- Water Tower is a 500,000 gallon elevated storage tank located in the industrial area (135’ tall)
- The XY building is the communications hub for the cape.
Regional Waste Water Treatment Plant
- The Regional Wastewater Treatment plant is located at the north end of Scrub Jay Road within the CCAFS industrial area. It is an oxidation ditch facility that processes wastewater and services the majority of NASA and CCAFS. The system was designed and is permitted to treat an annual average daily flow of 0.8 MGD. Slightly more than half of that flow is from KSC. Treated wastewater is disposed through a system of percolation ponds.
ITL to North Boundary
- The integrate, transfer and launch area is almost completely occupied by commercial customers with 2 active launch pads. CX 41 - Atlas 5 and CX 40 - Falcon. The Air Force is responsible for providing all infrastructure to this area.
Demarcations exist denoting where Air Force responsibility ends and commercial launch contractor begins. Typically these demarcations are in the vicinity of the security fences surrounding the respective pads.
Pump Station 7
- Supports launch deluge and fire suppression for CX-40/41 and the ITL area. There are six deluge pumps rated for 6,000 gpm and 500 HP each. There are two fire pipes rated for 2,500 gpm each, three jockey pumps rated for 300 gpm each, and a
1.25 million gallon storage tank. The facility has a backup generator.
SLC – 37 - Delta IV launch complex
SLC 14 to Lighthouse
- There are 12 launch complexes located along ICBM road dating back to the beginning of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The CX 14 blockhouse is maintained as a conference room and historical site. CX 13 is currently leased to Space-X. CX 36 is leased to Space Florida for future tenants. CX 46 is leased to the NOTU. The lighthouse and the adjoining historical Hangar C are maintained as functional cultural resources.
Munitions Storage Area 2
- MSA 2 has 12 storage magazines and two operating buildings) where a variety of items are stored, to include commercial flight ordnance, and DoD munitions. This area is also where ordnance items are tested prior to installation on various systems.
Fuel Storage Area 1
- FSA 1 is where toxic propellants are received and processed for loading launch and or satellite vehicles. FSA 1 is operated by NASA.
Cape Wing Headquarters building
- Houses the emergency operations center
South Substation
- South substation provides power to CCAFS from the south end and the majority of the substation is the responsibility of FPL.
