About this file
The document is a Field Observation Report prepared by Shear Structural, LLC for the Kennesaw State University (KSU) Clendenin Building project, located at 275 Kennesaw State University Road in Kennesaw, Georgia. The report documents structural repair observations made on October 15, 2024, following previous site visits that identified multiple structural deficiencies. The report focuses on a limited area of structural repairs at the south end of the east building elevation between the third floor and roof, specifically examining the implementation of repair details outlined in Structural Drawing S-200 issued by the Epsten Group on September 12, 2024.
The field observations reveal several critical discrepancies between the specified structural repair details and the actual implementation, including incomplete welding of brick support angles, insufficient welding of relief angles and support lintels, and potential issues with vertical movement accommodation. Key observations include brick support angles cut flush instead of being extended, welds not completed as specified on HSS columns and embed plates, and the need to replace cold-formed steel infill walls. The report also notes that required Structural Steel Shop Drawings were not submitted to the Structural Engineer of Record prior to fabrication and erection, which could potentially impact the structural integrity and compliance of the repairs.

Field Observation Report
Project: KSU Clendenin Building
275 Kennesaw State University Road
Kennesaw, Georgia 30144
Client: Epsten Group
Observation By: Bethany Jones, PE
Report No: 1
Report Date: 10.28.2024
Observation Date: 10.15.2024
Multiple structural deficiencies were observed during a previous site visit, performed on August 2, 2024.
Structural Drawing S-200, Issued by the Epsten Group with Bulletin #1 dated September 12, 2024, provided structural repair details for the previously noted deficiencies at the south end of the east building elevation between the third floor and roof elevations of the KSU Clendenin Building. The structural repairs in this limited area were completed prior to this site visit performed on October 15, 2024. The purpose of this Field Observation Report is to document the existing conditions of the completed structural repairs. These observations are limited in scope to the visible structural repairs and are not a comprehensive building inspection. Shear Structural assumes no responsibility for structural items hidden from view. Compliance with any code or standard is not within the scope of this inspection.
KSU has contracted with NOVA Engineering and Environmental to provide Special Inspection
Services for this project. This Field Observation Report is supplemental to the NOVA Inspection and Report.
Field Observations:
1. Partial Structural Elevation 1/S-200 shows that the brick support angle horizonal legs should be extended beyond the south end of the wall to be field spliced to the brick support angles on the south wall (at a later stage of construction). The brick support angles were stalled flush to the south end of the existing east wall. Therefore, the new brick support angles to be installed at a later stage of construction will require fabrication to correct this condition. Reference Photographs 1 and 2.
2. Structural Detail 5/S-200 specifies that the brick support angles are to field fillet welded all around to the new HSS columns. Observed welds are not installed all around. Reference Photograph 3.
3. Structural Detail 4/S-200 specifies that the brick relief angles are to be field fillet welded at both the top and bottom to the existing structural steel embed plates. Observed welds were installed only at the top of the new angles. Reference Photographs 4 and 5.
4. Structural Detail 2/S-200 specifies that the brick support lintel above the ribbon window is to be fillet stitch welded at the top and bottom of the new horizontal HSS beams. Observed stitch welds were installed only at the top of the new angles. Reference Photographs 6 and 7.
Suite A102-491
5. Structural Detail 5/S-200 specifies that vertical slotted holes were to be provided in the connection angles to the bottom of the existing building concrete roof beam. The purpose of these vertical slotted holes is to provide for differential movement of the new structural steel in respect to the existing concrete structure. Vertical slotted holes could not be field verified because washers and tack welds had been installed. Washers and tack welds need to be removed from these connections to allow for differential vertical movement. Reference Photograph 8.
6. Existing cold-formed steel infill stud walls were removed to allow for the installation of the new horizontal HSS members supporting the brick lintel over the window. These infill walls need to be replaced prior to the reinstallation of brick. Reference Photograph 9.
7. Structural Steel Shop Drawings, required by the Structural General Notes (6/S-200), were not submitted to the SEO prior to the fabrication and erection of the new structural steel.
8. Structural Drawing S-200, Issued by the Epsten Group with Bulletin #1 dated September 12, 2024, is included with this report for additional information.
