27 SOCES AutoCad Standards 2021

File Management:

General: Create documents for life-cycle management by Government personnel having limited building design, construction and CAD experience. Avoid making drawings overly complicated for use on future projects.

Drawing Files: Simplify organization through limited use of CAD features; layers, line types, colors, plotting commands, font types, hatches, etc. to that necessary for clear description of the work. Create entities without need to modify plot settings to achieve clear print reproductions.

Content Accuracy: Coordinate terminology describing identical work shown on drawings and described in specifications. Coordinate requirements established by manufacturers and shop drawings with performance criteria described in specifications. Verify that terminology is consistent within the different disciplines used in the drawings. Verify there are no conflicts between specified equipment and each discipline; structural, mechanical, architectural, electrical, etc. Verify existing conditions with new specified equipment on remodel projects.

Oversite: Review documents, prior to each submittal review, developed by design consultants to ensure accuracy of data and consistency in organization and format. Run the spell check feature in AutoCAD prior to each review submission.

Measurements: Use Imperial or US customary units; feet, inches, fractions of an inch, degrees Fahrenheit, gallons, pounds, square feet, acre, as the primary measuring standard.

Exception is to list distance measurements using tenths of a foot. Metric Units; used only if required as secondary, background, information.

Optional Work; Where Project CCL??????? requires separation of Design into Base and Optional Work, organize Bid Documents, drawings and specifications, as separate, ‘stand-alone’ design packages enabling issuance either as one or multiple projects. Specify Optional Work impact to Base Bid construction to be included with Bid Proposal. Do our govt. PMs have different requirements that would dictate a different application?

CAD Drawings:

Create in accordance with USACE Engineer Research and Development Center/Information Technology Laboratory TR-12-1A/E/C Graphics Standards (Aug. 2015).

Comply with specific standards identified herein, including:

Settings: Drawing Units Type – “Architectural” Precision – 1/16” inch Scale – “Inches”, 1” = 1”

Model Space

• Create each sheet as a separate, ‘stand-alone’ drawing file. Avoid complex drawing files used to create multiple sheets (paper space tabs).

• External References – Ensure each drawing can stand-alone, is complete, containing ALL layers, information required to view, work in and print useable drawings, without the need to locate and attach/overlay/bind externally referenced data. Attach JPGs, OLE objects, Raster images, TIFFs and other similar representations directly to the drawing to which they are associated as block entities. Bind all pertaining xref(s) to applicable drawing.

• Colors – Develop drawings primarily as black and white documents designed for printing and readability on white paper. Limit color use to ensure identification of key design entities on an “if-needed for clarity” basis. Use black, shades of grey and variation of line weight to achieve contrast, clarity and readability of small details. Avoid using colors as distinguishing tools; colors print black or grey when reproduced so their use is ineffective.

• Layers – Limit use to the minimum necessary for the clear understanding of design intent and erection requirements.

• Bar Scale – Provide a bar scale on plan (site, floor, roof and reflected ceiling) building elevation, building section and large scale wall section details to enable measuring from reduced or enlarged print reproductions. Indicate both small increments (foot) and larger multiples (5 or 10 feet).

The use of a bar scale is for a general scale, never to supersede the actual dimensions provided on drawings. If a question of scale arises, ALWAYS defer to the A/E, doriginating firm.

• Hatch Patterns – Use only when necessary to clarify extent of or emphasize drawing entity. Use a medium gray hue to distinguish area from outline of entity. The use of colored hatch or colored lines that are intended to show a distinguishing identity is prohibited. Colored lines never reproduce in the intended manner. When there is text shown within the “hatched” area always create an island around the text to exclude hatch pattern over text so that it is legible or move the text outside the “hatched” area and provide an arrow to the item/area described by text.

• Create all entities as flat (2D) drawings, using a ‘z’ coordinate value of zero (0). Provide flat, 2D isometric projections where 3D representations are used for design clarification.

• Orient plan drawings in the same way with plan north pointed to the top of the sheet. Orient lateral axis of drawing with lateral axis of the sheet.

• Blocks – Create entities on Layer 0 having a Global Origin at coordinates 0-0-0 (x-y-z). When exploded, entities shall revert to Layer 0. Create symbols as blocks (x-y-z), When exploded entities will revert to Layer 0. Create symbols as blocks (e.g. electrical symbols, beam sections, doors, title blocks, etc.)

• Polylines – Ensure shape integrity by converting connected lines defining a single entity to polylines.

• Converted Drawings – Any/all drawings, symbols, etc. that are not originated in AutoCAD by

AutoDESK, (.dwg) shall follow all standards provided in this document. Upon conversion to ‘.dwg’ files insure that the conversion was complete and all standards contained herein have been followed. Insure that every converted drawing is useable, no repairs needed. That each drawing is 2D, ‘flatten all’ if necessary, scale integrity is 1”=1”, that north is true a true orientation, that all lines are continual lines, not fragmented lines. Dimensions, orientation and angles shall be true to originating conditions.

Drawing Assembly

Create Design Models (graphic entities representing actual construction systems and elements) at full scale in model space. Locate lower left corner of drawing area (reference point) with a 0 (zero) Global Origin.

• Create composite images by superimposing multiple Design Models:

Architectural Construction Documentation Drawings:

Symbol Classification Structure The U.S. National CAD standard provides six classifications of symbols.

Following is a listing of the symbol types, description and examples of each:

• Identity Symbols are symbols are those symbols that indicated individual objects but are not representations of the objects. Identity symbols are generally used to indicate objects such as valves, fire alarms, light fixtures and electrical outlets.

• Line symbols are symbols that indicate continuous objects and are drawing using either single or double lines. Line symbols are generally used to indicate objects such as walls, ductwork and utility lines.

• Material Symbols are symbols that graphically indicate construction materials or material of existing conditions. Material symbols may be shown in elevation, section or plan views. Material symbols are generally used to indicate objects such as brick, stone, earth, wood, concrete and steel.

• Object Symbols are symbols that represent specific physical objects. Object symbols are generally used to indicate objects such as doors, windows, toilet fixtures and furniture and are drawn to scale.

• Reference Symbols are symbols that refer the reader to information in another area of the set of drawings, or give basic information regarding the drawings or data on the sheet. Reference symbols include such symbols as elevation indicators, detail indicator, north arrow, graphic scale, section indicators and revision clouds.

• Text Symbols are symbols that graphically indicate a word or words and may be in notations on drawings.

Paper Model/Space

• Place sheet borders, title blocks, notations, symbols, dimensions, schedules, and other similar annotations only in paper space (Paper Models). Do not locate annotations in model space unless character is integral to block symbol (e.g. $3).

• Sheet Size – Restrict all design disciplines to one common size ANSI D (22x34) or E (34x44).

• Text Size – 3/32 inch MINIMUM height for general notations. Increase height for drawing titles based upon image importance, critical, major, secondary, or ancillary detail.

If text is too small to read, the project submittal may be rejected.

Illegible text anywhere in the drawing entity is not acceptable.

• Text Placement – Organize test and leader lines in a neat manner to ensure clear readability of graphic illustration and minimum clutter. Crossing leader lines is not acceptable. Text should read left to right and from the bottom of the sheet to the top.

• Detail Layout – Arrange graphical illustrations on each sheet in order of importance for reading print reproductions from lower right, most important, to upper left, least important. Keep ALL detail numbering in sequential numerical order.

• Detail Scale – Insert using scale factor enabling clear reading of small, complete entities.

• Dimension Style - Use medium gray value for lines and arrows. Use architectural ticks (preferred) or if space permits used close/filled arrows. Locate dimension text above dimension line.

Set dimension text height slightly smaller than general notes text height, maintaining legibility.

• Line types – To designate different conditions use different line types, i.e. for construction to be removed, use a dashed line. For existing construction to remain, use a continuous line.

• Title Strip/Block – Use Base Standard Title Strip design as a block entity.

Use only Level 1 discipline designators. Number sheets sequentially.

Locate sheet identification box in lower right corner indicating design discipline (single letter) and 3-digit sheet sequence number (e.g. A-101).

Locate Sheet Title Box immediately above Project Identification Box.

Indicate sheet contents, project name and number and completion (issuance) date of finalized design. Orient long text descriptions for Sheet Identification left-to-right read across end of sheet.

[Architectural Floor Plan, Second Sheet]

• Sheet Identification – Identify drawing content in the Title Block (e.g. Roof Plan). List other related content where located on the same sheet (e.f. Roof Plan, Flashing Details).

• Locate Title Strip/Block with lower left corner placed at the lower right sheet corner.

• Attach photographs of existing conditions to drawing where work is illustrated.

• Organization – Separate drawings, notes, schedules, details and etc., into sub-sets by design discipline

• Site Plan – Indicate building footprint, pavements and ancillary structures.

Architectural Plans – Floor, roof and reflected ceiling. Indicate wall thickness, openings, locations and footprint of major equipment items. Centerline of wall(s) dimensions to outside face of building are prohibited.

• Building Elevations – Show openings, changes in materials, floor elevations, wall mounted equipment and roof profile. Show all sides of building.

Final Deliverables

• Provide final deliverables upon Acceptance by Cannon AFB for approval/disapproval. Make corrections to documents deemed non-compliant and resubmit in a timely manner. AutoCAD by AutoDESK (.dwg) is the acceptable format for electronic drawing files. Verify with 27 SOCES the version of AutoCAD being used so that submitted As Built .dwg files are fully compatible.

• Scan content to verify data is free of virus.

• Purge drawing files to remove extraneous and irrelevant data.

• Ensure layers are visible (‘ON’) and accessible (‘Unlocked, Thawed’)

• Ensure that all layers are designated as printable.

• Indicate project name, Base project number, contents and date (month and year) of construction completion on label. Contractor name and contract number may be provided as supplemental information.

Printed Documents

• Print directly from original electronic files.

• Drawings – Plot on 20# white bond paper designated for technical printing. Bind sheets by different design disciplines as separate sub-sets. Bind sub-sets having 15 or more sheets together with threaded removable studs in lieu of staples.

• Text Documents – Print specifications and approved submittal data on letter size (8 ½” x 11”) 20# white bond paper. Where ledger size (11”x17”) sheets are required, map fold to letter size.

Bind contents with protective, heavy weight, cardstock covers, front and back, and spiral plastic spines. Identify contents on front cover to include project name and Base project number.
