Re: Waterfront Structural Inspection Services United States Coast Guard Station Fort Myers Fort Myers Beach, FL 33931

Dear Mr. Ellis & Mr. Berg:

On March 9th and 10th, 2020 Appledore Marine Engineering, LLC (AME) completed a waterfront structural inspection of the waterfront structures at USCG Station Fort Myers, in Fort Myers Beach, Florida. This work was completed to support HDR Architecture, Inc. in the execution of the Task Order 70Z04720FMYERAE00 – Rebuild Station Fort Myers Beach and Waterfront.

Summary of Work

AME completed a cursory inspection of the waterfront structures at USCG Station Fort Myers. The inspection included a visual inspection of the existing structure to validate existing quantities/possible obstructions for demolition planning.

Findings

Several of the structures that make up the waterfront at the Station utilize timber piles for fender elements and support piles. The piles that remain have severe marine borer deterioration with approximately 100 percent section loss localized to low water. The contractor should be aware of this condition as the piles will be difficult to pull during demolition. It is recommended where the timber piles cannot be pulled, the piles should be cut below the mudline.

Remnant stub piles were identified below water and present a potential obstruction for pile driving operations at the 41 Pier Floating dock, Travel Lift Pier, and the WPB Pier.

Failed utility and concrete debris were identified along the Bulkhead at Sta. 2+25. It is recommended to remove the debris prior to the repair or reconstruction of the Bulkhead.
