About this file
This is an asbestos re-inspection report for Building 15 at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, North Carolina, conducted by Affinity Environmental Consulting in December 2024. The report identifies seven homogeneous areas containing asbestos-containing materials (ACM) throughout the building, including floor tiles and mastic, thermal system insulation (TSI) pipe runs and fittings, tar/gravel roofing materials, joint compound on sheetrock walls, and black moisture barrier.
The report includes detailed floor plans showing the locations of ACM and notes that while the building was renovated in the mid-1990s with some TSI removal, not all ACM was removed. Specific findings include 3 broken tiles in Room SP002, 10,000 SF of white/tan floor tile and mastic throughout various areas (with some areas abated in 2012), and 12,000 SF of roofing materials. The report indicates that most floor tiles and mastics should be assumed to contain asbestos unless tested when carpet is removed. A positive composite sample of drywall joint compound (<1% Chrysotile) was found on the 2nd floor in Room 212, and the report recommends bulk sampling of individual walls prior to any disturbance.
