About this file
This is a specification document for Section 230513 Common Motor Requirements for HVAC Equipment, part of project 25-388 CBI HVAC and Lighting Upgrade. The document establishes comprehensive technical requirements for electric motors used in HVAC systems, covering single-phase motors (1/2 horsepower and smaller at 115 volts, 60 Hz), three-phase motors (larger than 1/2 horsepower at 60 Hz with voltage as specified on contract drawings), and Electronically Commutated Motors (ECM). The specification details motor construction standards, nominal efficiency ratings ranging from 50.0 to 82.5 percent depending on motor type and pole configuration, and specific application requirements for various equipment types including furnaces, rooftop units, fans, pumps, blowers, and air compressors. Approved manufacturers include Baldor Electric Company/ABB Group, Leeson Electric Corporation, and Regal-Beloit Corporation (Century), with ECM units sourced from US Motors, a brand of NIDEC Motor Corporation. Motors must comply with NEMA MG 00001, NFPA 70, and ABMA STD 9 standards, and submittals must include product data, test reports verifying efficiency and power factor, manufacturer's installation instructions, operation data, and maintenance documentation.
The specification establishes quality assurance requirements mandating manufacturers have minimum three years documented product development, testing, and manufacturing experience. Motors must be designed for continuous operation in 104-degree Fahrenheit environments with appropriate temperature rise ratings per NEMA MG 00001. Frame sizes 254T and larger must be energy efficient type. Three-phase squirrel cage motors require NEMA Design B characteristics with anti-friction ball bearings rated for minimum ABMA STD 9, L-10 life of 20,000 hours. Wiring terminations must include terminal lugs appropriately sized for conductor quantities and materials with terminal boxes sized to NFPA 70 specifications. Installation must be performed in accordance with manufacturer instructions with motors mounted securely on firm foundations, and line voltage and phase must be verified against nameplate specifications.
