About this file
This document is a technical specification section for flowmeters, specifically detailing requirements for floating-ball flowmeters and associated transmitters for a water system project. The specification covers flowmeter performance requirements, including an accuracy of plus or minus 1.5%, flow range of 0.75 to 120 gallons/minute, and operational temperatures from -22 to 150 degrees F. The flowmeters are intended for three raw water wells (Wells 4, 6, and 7), each with a 1.5-inch size and 0-0.17 MGD range, utilizing integral high standard transmitters.
Key technical specifications include stainless steel body, titanium shaft, 150 psig pressure rating, and digital encoder output with capabilities for dual range switching, bi-directional flow indication, and simultaneous digital flow rate and totalization displays. Installation requirements mandate vertical pipe mounting with upward flow, full pipe conditions, and separate conduits for signal and power wiring. The specification also mandates factory calibration with a submitted calibration report and requires field verification using pitot testing to ensure specified flow accuracy.

SECTION 43 22 50 – FLOWMETERS
Revise this Section by deleting and inserting text to meet Project-specific requirements.
This Section uses the term "Architect." Change this term to match that used to identify the design professional as defined in the General and Supplementary Conditions.
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. This section describes the requirements for floating-ball flowmeters and associated transmitters.
1.2 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A. Provide instruments capable of meeting the following performance requirements when installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations:
1. Measured accuracy within plus or minus 1.5% of rate (standard).
2. Warm up time not to exceed 10 minutes.
3. Flow range: 0.75 to 120 gallons/minute. Normal operating velocities 0.5 to 5 feet/second.
4. Electronics ambient temperature -22 to 150 degrees F.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 PRIMARY ELEMENT
A. Meet the following requirements unless noted otherwise on the instrument schedule.
1. Shall meet AWWA Standard C701.
2. Flowmeter body and flanges: 304 Stainless Steel
3. Floating ball impeller with coated titanium shaft and hybrid axial bearings.
4. Process connection: flanges, rated 150 psig.
5. Maximum fluid pressure 150 psig.
6. Maximum fluid temperature with integral electronics, 80 degrees F.
B. Nominal size shall be as identified in the meter schedule in Part 3 of this Section.
2.2 AMPLIFIER/TRANSMITTER
A. Meet the following requirements unless noted otherwise on the instrument schedule.
1. Design: Digital Encoder Output
2. The amplifier/transmitter shall be integrally mounted.
3. The amplifier/transmitter shall be capable of automatic dual range switching and bi-directional flow indication.
4. Display:
a. Provide simultaneous digital indication of flow rate in percent of span or engineering units and totalization in engineering units.
b. Totalizers shall be provided for forward, reverse, and differential flow.
c. Integrally mounted on the primary element.
d. Characters 6 mm or larger.
5. Outputs:
a. Isolated 4-20 mA for use by the supervisory control system.
b. Open collector scaleable pulse output rated 30 Vdc for each direction.
6. Alarms: High and low; adjustable set-points; isolated output SPDT contacts, 2 A 120 Vac.
7. Enclosure: NEMA 4 rated enclosure.
8. Incoming Power: 120 Vac 60Hz, 50 watts, or less
9. Signal: Manufacturer’s sensor cable connection direct from sensor to instrument housing via flexible weather-proof conduit.
10. Provide separate conduits for signal and power wiring to the meter and between the transmitter and control panel. Meter shall be grounded in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLATION
A. Verify exact mounting location and orientation with factory trained field representative.
B. Never install a meter where gas can collect or a line can self-drain when flow stops.
C. Install meters where the pipe remains full at all times.
D. Install meters in vertical pipes where flow is upward.
E. Install separate conduits for signal and power wiring to the meter and between the transmitter and control panel. All flow meter cable lengths shall be confirmed prior to installation.
F. Ground the meter in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
3.2 FLOW METER CALIBRATION
A. Factory Calibration: Flow calibration of the flow meter shall be performed in the Factory and the calibration report submitted as part of the Shop Drawings.
B. Field Verification: Field verification of the factory calibration shall take place once the flow meter and piping installations are complete. Corporation stops shall be provided for calibration verification using pitot testing. Recalibrate the flow meter as necessary until specified flow accuracy is attained.
