About this file
This document is a technical specification section for fiber-cement siding installation at the Chisos Mountains Lodge and Visitor Contact Station in Big Bend National Park. The specification details the requirements for installing James Hardie fiber-cement siding products, including horizontal lap siding and panel siding for two buildings. Specific requirements include 5/8-inch thick lap siding with 7-inch exposure, 12-foot lengths, smooth texture, and factory priming, with a 30-year manufacturer's warranty.
The installation methodology specifies a rainscreen approach using 7/8" galvanized furring channels installed vertically at 16-inch intervals, with detailed instructions for fastening, joint treatment, and edge preparation. The specification includes requirements for accessories like hat channels, insect barriers, and joint sealants, and mandates compliance with manufacturer's installation guidelines. The project emphasizes proper installation techniques to ensure water resistance, thermal movement accommodation, and long-term performance of the fiber-cement siding system.

1. See James Hardie HZ-10 Best Practices-Installation Guide for Siding and Trim
Products, December 2019.
C. Pre-drill nail holes if required to prevent breakage. Use a masonry bit when drilling fiber cement products.
D. Touch-up all field cut edges before installing.
E. Allow space between both ends of siding panels that butt against trim for thermal movement;
seal joint between panel and trim with exterior grade sealant.
F. Joints in Horizontal Siding: Avoid joints in lap siding except at corners; where joints are required, stagger between successive courses. Overlap joints to shed water away from direction of prevailing wind.
BIBE 259631-317515 07 46 46-6
G. Install sheet metal flashing above door and window casings and horizontal trim in field of siding as indicated on Drawings.
H. Fastener Requirements: Position fasteners 1-inch from top of the plank for lap siding, 3/8" minimum from panel edges and no closer than 2" away from corners. Do not nail into corners.
Blind nail, typical.
