About this file
This is an instruction manual and technical documentation for three separate naval propulsion systems: 800 HP DC Main Propulsion Motors, Bow Thruster Motors, and Ships Service Transformers, approved for use on Ocean Surveillance Ships (T-AGOS class vessels) under Navy contract N00024-85-C-2046. The manual covers equipment manufactured by General Electric Company (Schenectady, New York) and Halter Marine, Inc. (Moss Point, Mississippi), with a focus on the T-AGOS 60 vessel.
The document provides comprehensive operational, maintenance, and installation guidance for DC propulsion systems rated at 800 horsepower, 185 RPM, 750 volts, and 890 amperes continuous current. Key specifications include Class F insulation, an 85°C temperature rise above 50°C ambient, reversible rotation capability (CW or CCW), and integral cooling systems including salt-water-to-air heat exchangers. The manual addresses initial startup procedures, prestart inspections, operating parameters for both propulsion and thruster motors, preventive and corrective maintenance protocols, troubleshooting guidance, bearing lubrication requirements (300 SSU @ 100°F minimum viscosity), electrical safety precautions for high-voltage systems, and detailed installation procedures for motor assembly, alignment, coupling, and brush rigging adjustments. Instrumentation monitoring includes multiple temperature sensors (RTDs), oil flow measurement, and bearing temperature relays. The equipment requires proper ventilation (10–50°C ambient), dedicated cooling water systems (approximately 45 GPM nominal flow), space heaters for moisture prevention during storage, and compliance with National Electrical Code standards for grounding and electrical connections.

CAUTION:
I F THE BEARING O I L I S REPLACED BY O I L OF HIGHER VISCOSITY THAN THAT
RECOMMENDED ON THE OUTLINE DRAWING, AT THE M A X I M U M OPERATIONAL SPEED

1-5 SUMMARY OF WARNINGS/CAUTIONS (Cont'd)
WARMING:
COVERS OF FORCE VENTILATED MACHINES ARE SUBJECT TO SUBSTANTIAL A I R
FLOW FORCES. USE CAUTION WHEN REMOVING AND REPLACING COVERS WHEN
MACHINE I S ROTATING OR ENERGIZED OR WHEN VENTILATING FANS ARE OPERA-
TING. THE SAFEST APPROACH I S TO ONLY REMOVE THE COVERS WHEN THE
MACHINE I S AT STANDSTILL AND THE VENTILATING FANS ARE OFF.
FAILURE TO OBSERVE T H I S PRECAUTION M A Y RESULT I N DAMAGE TO THE EQUIP-
MENT, INJURY TO PERSONNEL OR BOTH.
WARNIN:
Do NOT WATCH THE ARCING T I P S OF CIRCUIT BREAKERS OR CONTACTORS WHEN THE
DEVICE I S INTERRUPTING LOAD CURRENTS. EYES M A Y BE INJURED.
WARUING:
DISCONNECT POWER BEFORE TOUCHING ANY INTERNAL PART. HIGH VOLTAGE MAY BE
PRESENT WHEN THE MACHINE I S NOT ROTATING. DISCONNECT ALL AC LINE
CONNECTIONS TO THE RECTIFIER POWER SUPPLY. ALSO DISCONNECT POWER FROM
AUXILIARY DEVICES.
CAUTION:
Do NOT OPEN THE FIELD CIRCUIT OF A Dc MOTOR WHILE THE ARMATURE I S
ENERGIZED. HIGH ARMATURE CURRENTS OR, I F THE LOAD I S LIGHT, HIGH ROTOR
SPEED RESULTS.
I N CASE OF IMPROPER FUNCTIONING OF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, A VOLTAGE
POTENTIAL MAY E X I S T ON ROTATING, UNGROUNDED ROTORS. T H I S POTENTIAL CAN
BE HAZARDOUS TO OPERATING PERSONNEL WHO CONTACT ROTATING PARTS SUCH A S
THE SHAFT.
CAUTION:
Do NOT ENERGIZE A FIELD CIRCUIT NOT EQUIPPED WITH EITHER A FIELD
DISCHARGE RESISTOR OR OTHER MEANS FOR ABSORBING THE ENERGY STORED WHEN
SUCH AN INDUCTIVE CIRCUIT I S SUBSEQUENTLY DE-ENERGIZ ED. HIGH V O G
TAGES, I N W C E D WHEN THE CIRCUIT I S DE-ENERGIZED, M A Y DAMAGE THE I N -
SULATION.
CWTION:
Do NOT ATTEMPT TO OPEN AN ISOLATING OR DISCONNECT SWITCH WHEN UNDER
LOAD. SUCH SWITCHES ARE NOT DESIGNED AS CURRENT-INTERRUPTION DEVICES
AND CAN BE DAMAGED BY THE ENSUING ARC. THE WAD SHOULD BE REWCED TO
ZERO, THEN THE SWITCH OPENED.

CAUTION:
Do NOT CLOSE ANY SWITCH OR CIRCUIT BREAKER SLOWLY. CLOSE THE DEVICE
FIRMLY WITH A SMOOTH, CONTINUOUS MOTION SO, I F A FAULT E X I S T S , THE
SWITCH W I L L CLOSE SECURELY AND CONWCT sVFFICIENT FAULT CURRENT TO
OPEN THE CIRCUIT PROTECTIVE DEVICE.
