About this file
This is a draft load test procedure document for the gangway system on the NOAA Ship Gordon Gunter. The procedure specifies comprehensive testing requirements to validate the gangway's structural integrity and operational functionality prior to returning it to service during the vessel's FY27 drydock. The test must be conducted in the presence of the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR), a Crane Inspector, and an American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) representative, with the gangway loaded to the weight currently identified on its load test placard.
The testing methodology requires the gangway to be positioned on end supports in a level configuration, with deflection measurements recorded at minimum six locations away from the ends. The load is to be applied evenly using sandbags, waterbags, or COR-approved methods and held for 15 minutes, after which the gangway must be inspected for damage or excessive deformation. If tack welds fail during testing, they must be repaired and the full weight test re-performed. Upon successful completion, the procedure requires demonstration that side frames show no distortion, decking is adequately secured, rollers move freely, and removable components (stations, handrails, guides, and rigid joint fittings) function properly and can be stowed when dismantled. The final deliverable is a comprehensive test report documenting all test details, results, instrumentation data, and calibration information. The procedure references ISO 7061 standard requirements of 5000N/m² load specifications.

(DRAFT) NOAA Gangway Load Test Procedure for Gordon Gunter
1. In conjunction with weight test of other equipment, perform weight test of ship's gangway in the presence of the COR, Crane Inspector, and ABS to weight currently identified on load test placard.
a. Remove gangway and place upon end supports to allow loading of gangway and measurement of deflection. Gangway Must be level.
b. Mark locations for, and measure distances from gangway to level surface on the gorund, and record for each location. Minimum six (6) locations, away from end to be measured.
c. Using sandbags, waterbags, or other method approved by COR, distribute test load evenly across length of gangway. Load must be applied gently, and evenly.
d. Measure deflection of gangway.
e. Hold full load for 15 minutes.
f. Remove load, and Inspect for damage or excess deformation.
g. Upon completion of “e” and/or any subsequent repairs from “e,” re-perform weight test.
h. Upon completion of steps “e-f” above, make weld repairs to the tack welds which failed during this testing.
i. Replace Weight Test placard with placard indicating same loads as existing, but updated test date.
j. Demonstrate that:
a. There is no distortion of the side frames
b. The decking is adequately secured
c. The rollers move freely
d. The stations, handrail, and guides can be easily removed and erected
e. The removable fittings for rigid joints can be properly stowed when the gangway is dismantled
k. Provide report with test details and results, as well as all instrumentation and calibration.
Return gangway to service installation.
Note: ISO 7061 requires a load of 5000N/m^2 or 0.725 lbf/ft^2
