About this file
This is a QUADRANS User Manual, a technical product documentation file for an Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS) manufactured by iXBlue. The document provides mechanical and electrical interface specifications for the QUADRANS inertial navigation system used primarily in marine applications.
The QUADRANS is a compact 16 cm x 16 cm x 11.3 cm unit powered by 24 VDC (15-36 V range) with approximately 10 W power consumption. It contains three fiber optic gyroscopes and three accelerometers and delivers heading and attitude information to external systems. The device achieves full operational capability within 30 minutes: five minutes for coarse alignment and 25 minutes while moving. The system is IMO/SOLAS 74 certified under Module B certificates 28465 and 28466 (for standard and high-speed craft gyro compass designations) and Module D quality system certificate SMS.MED.D/24647. The center of measurement is precisely located inside the unit at specified coordinates for accurate lever arm calculations with external sensors.
The system features four primary connectors: power supply (Fischer DBPU103Z052), Ethernet (Fischer DBPU103A053), serial I/O ports (Fischer DBPU104A092), and I/O pulses (Fischer DBPU104A086). All connectors use Fischer fool-proof designs. The serial interface supports two RS232/RS422 configurable outputs and inputs with isolated drivers, plus one RS232 repeater link. The Ethernet interface provides Class D/Cat 5e connectivity for 10 Base T or 100 Base TX networks with user-configurable UDP/TCP protocols. The I/O pulses connector accommodates three synchronization inputs, one PPS input for time synchronization, and two outputs. Default communication settings include 57.6 kBauds baudrate with odd parity and 2 stop bits on the serial repeater, IP address 192.168.36.1xx via Ethernet, and HTTP web server access on port 80 with TCP repeater flow on port 8110. Recommended cabling uses shielded twisted pairs to prevent cross-talk, with shield connection at one end only to avoid ground loops.

I INTRODUCTION
This document is the QUADRANS User Manual. It provides information on QUADRANS specifications, mechanical and electrical interfaces.
The QUADRANS system is an AHRS. It delivers heading and attitude information to other systems or to displays. It can receive data from other sensors to improve its accuracy.
The current edition of this document is applicable to QUADRANS units using firmware versions higher than 2.74 (DSP) and 5.62 (CINT).
The core of QUADRANS is an inertial measurement unit (IMU). The IMU is the assembly of three high class (0.1 deg/h) fiber optic gyroscopes (FOG) manufactured by the Inertial
Products Division of iXBlue (formerly iXSea) and three high precision accelerometers (see document Inertial Products - Principle & Conventions (Ref.: MU-INS&AHRS-AN-003) for an overview of the INS and AHRS technologies).
Even if it is an AHRS, QUADRANS contains a self-consistent navigation algorithm based on Kalman Filtering. This structure enables QUADRANS to work either as a black box or to be connected to external sensor systems (GPS or EM log) to correct heading from latitude and speed influence and to be able to output filtered speed information (see document Inertial Products - Principle & Conventions (Ref.: MU-INS&AHRS-AN-003) for an overview of the INS and AHRS technologies). Furthermore the association of the
Kalman filter plus the coupling with the external sensors improves the heading and stability performances.
Much attention has been put on the mechanical design of QUADRANS. The system is a compact 16 cm x 16 cm x 11.3 cm box. The box contains a high performance inertial measurement unit (IMU) and a digital signal processor (DSP) supporting the navigation software. Connectors enable the connections of external sensors.
Developed marine applications, it can be interfaced easily with other industry standard navigation sensors (GPS, EM log) and systems.
QUADRANS uses external sensor data to improve its own estimates of attitude and heading. The following external sensor can be connected to QUADRANS:
• GPS
• EM Log
When a GPS is connected, QUADRANS will output filtered position and speed. When the position is no more given by the GPS, QUADRANS displays the last known position or the entered manual position. The speed output by QUADRANS is systematically filtered by the Kalman filter whatever the coupling mode is (GPS, EM Log or manual speed). There is no additional activation of the external sensors on QUADRANS as for the other INS. Once configured, the external sensor is activated (i.e. taken into account by the Kalman filter).

Your QUADRANS internal clock can be synchronized with data coming from an external reference clock (i.e., GPS clock). In this case, time is synchronized with input coming from the selected interface with appropriate protocol. For more details see INS – Marine
Applications, Web-based interface user guide (Ref.: MU-INSIII-AN-021).
QUADRANS is ready and meets its specifications within 30 minutes:
• First 5 minutes for the coarse alignment phase (static or at drift)
• Then 25 minutes moving

V MECHANICAL SPECIFICATIONS
V.1 QUADRANS Mechanical Alignment
Alignment is carried out by means of two centering pins, located on the bottom plate of the
QUADRANS (accuracy of mechanical positioning with the centering pins is ±0.01 degree).
These pins are located on the QUADRANS centerline, as shown by grooves on the front and rear of the gyrocompass.
The mechanical tolerance in the design of QUADRANS bottom plate allows 0.01° accuracy on the centerline of the unit.
V.2 QUADRANS Center of Measurements
The QUADRANS center of measurement (see Figure 1) is the intersection of the three
QUADRANS reference axis X1, X2 and X3 defined in Inertial Products - Principle &
Conventions (Ref.: MU-INS&AHRS-AN-003). It lies inside QUADRANS, and its exact position is reported in Figure 1).
The QUADRANS center of measurements is the reference point for the determination of
QUADRANS and external sensor lever arms (Refer to the document Inertial Products -
Principle & Conventions (Ref.: MU-INS&AHRS-AN-003) for details).

Important
IT IS RECOMMENDED TO USE SHIELDED MULTI-TWISTED PAIRS TO PREVENT CROSS-TALK
PROBLEMS BETWEEN INPUT AND OUTPUT, AND THIS MAY GIVE ERROR OR DYSFUNCTION. SHIELD
LINK SHOULD BE DONE AT ONE END ONLY TO AVOID GROUND LOOPS UNLESS SHIELD IS USED AS
