About this file
This is a Technical Manual for Carbon Dioxide Total Flooding Systems used on Military Sealift Command vessels T-AGOS-13 through T-AGOS-18. The manual was prepared by ANSUL Fire Protection in Marinette, Wisconsin under Contract No. N00024-85-C-2046 and was approved on September 1, 1987.
The manual provides comprehensive guidance on description, operation, and maintenance of fixed-pipe carbon dioxide fire extinguishing systems. Key system components include 50-pound CO2 cylinders with AP-8 valves, flexible discharge bends, enclosed releases, manual pull boxes, pneumatic switches, pressure-operated sirens, time-delay release mechanisms, corner pulleys, sealed nozzles, and associated piping and cable assemblies. The system operates through remote activation via pull boxes or local manual release, with a 20-second time delay before CO2 discharge into motor enclosures. Critical operational procedures include securing hatches, breaking glass on pull boxes to activate remote control, and following strict reentry protocols using self-contained breathing apparatus. Maintenance requirements include monthly inspections of nozzles and discharge bends, quarterly pneumatic switch testing, semi-annual weight checks of CO2 cylinders (replacement required if below 90% capacity), and annual cylinder recharging. The manual contains detailed maintenance schedules, troubleshooting guidance, installation procedures for cylinders, piping, nozzles, pull boxes, and enclosed release mechanisms. Component specifications, schematic drawings, system piping arrangements for propulsion motor enclosures, and parts lists are provided with U.S. Coast Guard and Underwriters Laboratories approvals referenced throughout.

GENERAL INFORMATION
1 - 1. INTROOUCtlON.
This manual provideu information necessary for the proper operation, maintenance, and installation of fixed pipe carbon dioxide firs extinguishing systems aboard the ship.
This use of this equipment may be required at any time. It is, therefore, important to keep the apparatus in perfact condition a t all timac
Thca insructions should be carried out in every detail and tomeone in charge should become fully familiar widi tha equipment and arrange for mquired periodical inmudon to insure the best sarvice and proper operation of the system.
If additional information or d c a is required, communicate with The Anal Company, Marinene, Wisconsin 54143, AC (715) 735.7411.
1- 2 CHAARACTERlSTlCS OF CARBON OlOXlDE
Cubon dioxide is a dry, noneorrosiva in- gas that will not injure machinary, equipment, woodwork, finisha or anything With whldr it mry coma in conma It Will not supporc combustion duu to tho absanca of any free oxygan, and thus this prop.rry is utilized in extinguishing fim It is a nonconductor of
One of carban dioxide's mort valwbla p r o p d m is ia high ratio of expansion. When liberated, carbon dioxide gas is discharged from tha cylindor by tha f o m of its own expansion and penetrates every nook and comer, even seeking out cracks and crsvic8s when firs might lurk.
1-1
0 Carbon dioxide closely resembles steam as it emerges from the discharge nozzles. This is due to the moisture in the air being frozen by the extremely low temperature of the carbon dioxide gas and fine
"snow" accompanying the discharge.
Carbon dioxide (not to be confused with carbon monoxide) is not poisonous, but it does not carry oxygen in any form for sustaining human life.
When there is any question as to the amount of carbon dioxide present in a space where fire has been extinguished, it is always desirable to'twt the atmosphere by inserting a lighted Davy type safety lamp.
I f the safety lamp continues to bum, it indicates that a human may enter the space with safety. Never test atmosphere by insedng a naked flame, as the possible presence of flammable vapon may result in an explosion.
I f necessary to enter a spa- in hidl carbon dioxide has been discharged, one may do so for a short period by holding his breath. If necessary to enter for a longer period, use a suitable self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus.
Any penon overcome by carbon dioxide should be removed a8 quickly as possible to a point where plenty of fresh air is available and artificial respiration should bo applied as in the cas of drowning.
When using a h o a unit in a lam mclosed spaca there is no existing danger to the operazor. However, the above characteristics of carbon dioxide gar am set forth so drat cam will be exercised in entering any enclosd space that has been flooded with the gas until such space has beon completely ventilated.
No matter how long cylinden remain unused, carbon dioxide is just as effective a the day the cylinden wen filled, as carbon dioxide doss nat detsriorats.

1 - 3 - SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
Fixed pipe systems are comprised of carbon dioxide cyl inders capable of being released by l oca l and remote contro l . These systems provide t o t a l f l ood ing of the Propulsion Motor Enclosures w i t h carbon dioxide through f i x e d pipes t o various discharge nozzles.
Each C02 cy l i nde r i s equipped with an .enclosed release a t the top o f the cy l i nde r and i s a lso connected t o i nd i v idua l remote p u l l boxes located outside the space. E i the r device may be used t o actuate the system.
Once the system i s actuated, the C02 cy l i nde r valve i s opened and C02 pressurizes the l i n e from the C02 cy l i nde r t o the time delay device and t o the pressure operated switch (es), pneumatic release, and siren. The pressure switch i s t r ipped by the released C02 c los ing (o r opening) the connected c i r c u i t ( 5). The pneumatic release i s a lso t r i pped t o close dampers. A f t e r a 20 second delay, the C02 i s released i n t o the discharge piping. The p ip ing d i s t r i b u t e s the C02 t o the nozzles which dispenses i t I n t o the motor enclosure u n t i l the cy l i nde r i s completely empty.

For recharging the AP-8 cylinder valve, it is neces-sary to have a special filling adaptor assembly.
The assembly, Part No. 45389, is composed of a hose adaptor, having a 1/2-14 male thread for hose attachment 'and a discharge outlet cap. valve is stamped on the side of the valve.
The hose adaptor is attached to the side filling inlet, normally covered with a knurled cap with four holes in it. Be sure that the "0" ring, around the charging hole in the adaptor, is in place before attaching adaptor. Screw UP adaptor wrench tight.
To recharge cylinder, place it on scale and attach filling adaptor as described above. Attach filling hose to adaptor and fill with dry CO2 to proper weight The total full weight of the cylinder and
When the charging hose and adaptor are detached, the check in the filling inlet will seat under pres sure and no further sealing is necessary. The knurl-ed cap should be replaced on the filling inlet for protection.
The knurled discharge outlet cap should be screw-ed on to the discharge outlet, the lowest Outlet on the side of the valve. This need be attached hand tight only, as the pin inside the cap acts to hold open the outlet check. By holding the outlet check open the residual pressure under the main valve seat is relieved, allowing the valve to close properly.
8e sure to mark the date and weight on the record card attached to the neck of the cylinder.
Replace valve protection cover to prevent damage during handling and shipment.
