3.3

INSULATION INSTALLATION

A.

Refer to Section 07220 Roof And Deck Insulation.

3.4

BASE PLY INSTALLATION

A.

Fiberglass Plies: Install two Millennium base sheets in two to two and a half (2-2½) gallons per ply per square of bitumen shingled uniformly to achieve two plies throughout over the prepared substrate. Shingle in proper direction to shed water on each large area of roofing. Prior to installation, cut sheets into

18’lengths and allow to relax.

Lap ply sheet ends eight inches. Stagger end laps twelve inches minimum.

C.

Extend plies two inches beyond top edges of cants at wall and projection bases.

D.

Install base flashing ply to all perimeter and projection details.

E.

Allow the two plies of base sheet to cure at least thirty minutes before installing the modified membrane.

however, the modified membrane must be installed the same day as the base plies.

3.5

MODIFIED MEMBRANE APPLICATION

A.

Solidly bonded to the base layers with specified cold adhesive at the rate of one and one half to two (2-2 ½) gallons per 100 square feet.

B.

The roll must push a bead of adhesive in front of it with adhesive slightly visible at all side laps. Care should be taken to eliminate air entrapment under the membrane.

C.

Subsequent rolls of modified shall be installed across the roof as above with a minimum of four (4inches) side laps and eight (8inces) end laps. The end laps shall be staggered. The modified membrane shall be laid in the same direction as the underlying plys but the laps shall not coincide with the laps of the base layers.

D.

For best results, allow the cold adhesive to set for five (5) to ten (10) minutes before installing the top layer of modified membrane.

E.

Extend membrane two (2inches) beyond top edge of all cants in full moppings of the cold adhesive.

F.

All mineral surfaced end and side laps must be sealed using a hot air gun a small pencil line bead of coal tar pitch should be visible upon completion. Exercise care during application to eliminate air entrapment under the membrane.

G.

Apply pressure with a solid rubber roller to all seams to ensure that the laps are solidly bonded to substrate.

3.6

HOT AIR WELDING OF SIDE LAPS AND END LAPS

A. The laps of all mineral surfaced Millennium membranes should only be hot air welded with an electric type hot air welder (such as Leister Triac, Uniplan S, Electron or Hotjet see www.leister.com). Torching is not acceptable.

B. When hot air welding laps, the adhesive should be applied at the specified rate to the entire area up to but not including the edge of the 4” selvage or 8” end lap. Any adhesive in the lap area must be removed prior to heat welding.

C. The membrane should be set into the adhesive and pressed into place by brooming or rolling to assure contact with the adhesive under the membrane.

D. Any adhesive should be removed from the top edge of the selvage lap or underlying end of end lap prior to hot air welding the laps.

E. Avoid stepping on side laps before they have been heat sealed and rolled. Stepping on the lap can make it stick and tear when the lap is lifted for heat welding.

F. The corners of the underlying membrane at end laps and the corner of the selvage on side laps at T-joints should be cut at a 45º angle the width of the selvage (4”) (101mm). This will promote bitumen flow out at the side laps and ensure watertight “T” joints.

G.

The desired result of heat welding will be a completely sealed lap with a small pencil line bleed out of the compound visible at all edges. Where no compound is visible at edge of side lap or end lap, laps should be checked by probing the lap with a trowel after the membrane has cooled.

3.7

FLASHING MEMBRANE INSTALLATION

Seal all curb, wall and parapet flashings with an application of mastic and mesh on a daily basis. Do not permit conditions to exist that will allow moisture to enter behind, around or under the roof or flashing membrane.

B.

Prepare all walls, penetrations, expansion joints [and where shown on the drawings] to be flashed with coal tar primer at the rate of one hundred (100) square feet per gallon. Allow primer to dry tack free.

C.

Use the modified membrane as the flashing membrane. Adhere to the underlying base flashing ply with specified bitumen unless otherwise noted in these specifications. Nail off at a minimum of eight (8) inches o.c. through a termination bar and seal with a three-course application of trowel-grade mastic and fiberglass mesh at tope edge. Top of flashing must be 8” from the finished roof at all vertical surfaces.

Solidly adhere the entire sheet of flashing membrane to the substrate.

E.

Seal all vertical laps of flashing membrane with a three-course application of trowel-grade mastic and fiberglass mesh.

F.

Coordinate counter flashing, cap flashings, expansion joints and similar work with modified bitumen roofing work [as specified in other sections].

G.

Coordinate roof accessories, miscellaneous sheet metal accessory items, including piping vents and other devices with the roofing system work [as specified in other sections].

H.
