NFPA 70

3.2 SEISMIC REQUIREMENTS

The structural design calculations for seismic restraints and detail drawings for electrical conduit and equipment in this section must be developed by the Contractor in accordance with the requirements of Section

13 48 00.00 26, SEISMIC RESTRAINT FOR MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT.

3.3 CONDUIT SYSTEM INSTALLATION

3.3.1 General

a. Conduit systems must be installed in accordance with NECA/NEIS 1 and NECA 101. Pull boxes must be furnished and installed, complete with covers, in conduit runs as required by NFPA 70 and good practice in the industry.

b. Do not install conduit exhibiting damage of any kind. Avoid trapped conduit runs where possible. Take care to prevent the lodgment of foreign material in the conduit, boxes, fittings, and equipment during the course of construction. Clear any clogged conduit of obstructions or replace conduit.

c. Exposed conduit must be installed to avoid interference with other work. Structural steel must not be cut, drilled or bent to avoid interference except with written approval. Exposed conduit must be installed to conform to the shape of the surface over which it is run and must be installed parallel or perpendicular to walls, structural members, or intersections of vertical planes and ceilings. Supports must be used at entrance or exit from all conduit fittings, boxes, cabinets and changes of direction of conduit.

3.3.2 Thread Compound

Conduit joints and connections must be made conductive, watertight and rustproof by the application of a blend of colloidal copper and rust inhibitors. Each threaded joint must be thoroughly cleaned to remove all cutting oil before the compound is applied.

3.3.3 Liquid-Tight Flexible Conduit

Use of liquid-tight flexible conduit must be limited to make electrical connections to vibration-isolated equipment connections and must not exceed 36-inches in length.

3.3.4 Cutting and Threading

All cuts must be made with a hacksaw and then manually reamed, or made by a powered cutting/reaming tool approved for this use. Manual roller type pipe cutters must not be used on conduits. All cuts must be square and the conduit opening must not be constricted. After threading, conduit ends must be checked and reamed to remove any additional burrs, and the entire conduit must be thoroughly cleaned to remove all cuttings, dirt and oil from its interior. Conduit threads must be tapered using National Pipe

SECTION 26 05 00.00 26 Page 14

Thread dies and be clean-cut. No running threads will be permitted.

Conduit unions must be used where standard couplings cannot be used. All conduit joints must be wrench tight. Threadless fittings shall not be used on conduit runs.

All conduit cutting and threading be performed with suitable containment for cutting oil, shavings and chips, and that no cutting or threading be allowed to take place on the generators or above any equipment or open vents, drains, or similar openings.

3.3.5 Bends

a. Ensure that conduit runs between devices do not contain more than the equivalent of three 90-degree bends, including those bends located immediately at the device.

b. Make field-made bends and offsets with approved Hickey bending tool or conduit bending machine. Use long radius conduit for elbows larger than 2-1/2 inches.

3.3.6 Expansion Fittings

Expansion fittings must be installed at all crossings of concrete expansion joints and where necessary to compensate for thermal expansion greater than 1/4-inch on a straight run. Expansion fittings must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Expansion fittings must be installed such that the external bonding jumpers are visible for inspection.

3.3.7 Coordination

The conduit must be installed in the most direct and workmanlike manner so that interference between piping, ducts, conduit, mechanical, electrical, and structural features will be avoided. In case interference does develop, the Contracting Officer will decide which work must be relocated regardless of which work was first installed. The rerouting must be made without additional cost to the Government. The Contractor must carefully examine previously installed work prior to developing layout and installation plans for conduit and accessories to determine that installation can be made without interference with other work.

3.3.8 Termination of Conduit

All conduit terminations to sheetmetal boxes and enclosures must be made using grounding hubs.

3.3.9 Grounding and Bonding of Conduit

The entire conduit system must be electrically continuous and bonding jumpers must be used across all expansion fittings and between conduits entering and leaving electrical utility vaults, panelboards, switchboards, and cabinets. No welding or brazing of the grounding conductor to the conduit must be allowed. Insulated ground bushings must be used to bond metallic conduits. Conduits terminating at cabinets and panelboards must be grounded at the equipment by grounding bushings or grounding hub connected to the grounding system by a No. 8 wire, or as approved. Conduit runs must be grounded at both ends.

SECTION 26 05 00.00 26 Page 15

3.3.10 Conduit Cleaning

All new and existing conduit that will be reused must be cleaned by the contractor before pulling wire. The contractor must all clean the conduit by pulling a clean, dry, tight fitting rag through each conduit run.

3.3.11 Conduit Labeling

All new conduit shall have metal tags that identify the conduit name, as specified in the conduit and cable schedules at each equipment and wall penetration.

3.3.12 Conduit Inspection

After a conduit system is installed and cleaned, but prior to pulling conductors, it must be given a visual inspection and a mandrel must be drawn through the conduit in the presence of the Contracting Officer.

Should the mandrel fail to pass through the conduit, a new bend or length of conduit must be installed at the points of obstruction.

3.4 SAFETY SWITCH INSTALLATION

Do not mount safety switches in an inaccessible location or where the passageway to the switch may become obstructed. Operating levers, handles, or buttons must be located 60-inches above the finish floor line.

In locations where this is not possible, the Operating levers, handles, or buttons must not be higher than 79-inches above the finish floor line.

3.5 BOX AND ENCLOSURE INSTALLATION

3.5.1 General

Boxes must be provided in the wiring or raceway systems wherever required by NFPA 70 for pulling of wires, making connections, and mounting of devices or fixtures. Indicated elevations (if any) are approximate, except where minimum mounting heights for hazardous areas are required by NFPA 70.

3.5.2 Installation

All boxes and enclosures must be straight and true with horizontal or vertical structural lines. The final installation must not be out of plumb more than 1/4-inch over the full length nor be deformed more than 1/16-inch per linear foot nor more than a total of 1/4-inch in any surface. Gaskets for gasketed boxes must be treated with graphite or other approved paste at the time the cover is assembled to the box to prevent it from sticking. Blank covers must be installed on boxes where devices are not indicated. Open knockouts must not be permitted. Unused conduit openings must be plugged with an approved fitting. Exposed enclosures on concrete surfaces must be fastened with anchors near each corner.

Enclosures with threaded hubs must be provided with proper size hubs to fit conduit being installed. Threaded reducers will not be permitted.

3.6 ESCUTCHEONS AND NAME PLATE INSTALLATION

Escutcheons and name plates must be installed as indicated in the contract drawings. Mounting screws must be flush with the back of the panel to prevent damaging wires. Escutcheons and name plates must be level, evenly spaced and aligned with its associated devices. Escutcheons and name plates must visible to the operators.
