NOTES REGARDING STABILITY AND LOADING OF THE VESSEL
General Notes
Compliance with the stability criteria as indicated does not ensure immunity against capsizing, regardless of the circumstances, or absolve the Master from his responsibilities. The Master should therefore exercise prudence and good seamanship having regard to the season of the year, weather forecasts and the navigational zone and should take the appropriate action as to speed and course warranted by the prevailing circumstances.
Before a voyage commences, care should be taken to ensure that the sizeable pieces of equipment have been properly stowed to minimize the possibility of both longitudinal and lateral shifting while underway.
The loading conditions and the stability results computed in this booklet have been provided by using General Hydrostatics software. GHS is an advanced naval architectural software program which produces accurate results based on individual hydrostatics calculations for each condition rather than on the traditional method of using tabulated Hydrostatics and Cross-Curves values applied to a weight total. The results cannot be directly verified by the traditional longhand methods. These instructions have been prepared as an aid to operating personnel using this Trim and Stability Booklet to determine the vessel’s operating metacentric height (corrected available GM), trim, and drafts for any condition of loading or operation.
It will be the master’s responsibility to always maintain the vessel in a satisfactory stability condition, so as to comply with the stability requirements set forth in this booklet.

Minimum Standards for Weather Stability
USCG 46 CFR 170.170 – Weather criteria.
Each vessel must be shown by design calculations to have a metacentric height (GM) that is equal to or greater than the following in each condition of loading and operation:
𝐺𝑀 ≥
𝑃𝐴𝐻
𝑊𝑡𝑎𝑛(𝑇)
Where
P = 0.005 + (L/14,200)2 tons/ft2 . . . for ocean service, Great Lakes winter service, or service on exposed waters.
L = LBP in feet.
A = projected lateral area in square feet of the portion of the vessel and deck cargo above the waterline.
H = the vertical distance in feet from the center of A to the center of the underwater lateral area or approximately to the one-half draft point.
W = displacement in long tons.
T = the lesser of either 14 degrees heel or the angle of heel in degrees at which one-half the freeboard to the deck edge is immersed; or
The deck edge is taken as the intersection of the side shell and the uppermost continuous deck below which the side shell is weathertight.
Wind profile calculation was based on a crane at its minimum working radius and spuds held up.
The total windage area is the summation of the projected exposed hull and the additional area above main deck. This will be used in wind pressure calculations to calculate required GM.
Minimum Standard for Intact Stability
USCG 46 CFR Part 174 of Subpart B – Special Rules pertaining to Deck Barges in Intact condition.
(a) The barge must be shown by design calculations to have an area under the righting arm curve up to the angle of maximum righting arm, the down flooding angle, or 40 degrees, whichever angle is smallest, equal to or greater than –
(1) 15 foot-degrees (4.57 meter-degrees) for ocean and Great Lakes winter service.
(b) Down flooding angle means the static angle from the intersection of the vessel's centerline and waterline in calm water to the first opening that does not close watertight automatically.

LOADING CONDITIONS
A three-dimensional (3D) model of barge from RHINO software has been used to generate the load conditions in GHS. The units used in this document are long tons (LT) and feet (ft). The load conditions provided in this document have been selected to demonstrate vessel compliance with the Intact Stability Criteria. The results in this report are based on Intact stability criteria, analyzed at various loading conditions without ballast and the Crane stowed are mentioned below:
1. Lightship Condition (without ballast and Crane stowed)
2. Full Load Condition (without ballast and Crane stowed)
3. 50%Load Condition (without ballast and Crane stowed)
4. 10%Load Condition (without ballast and Crane stowed)
Notes on Free Surface For all conditions, the initial metacentric height should be corrected for the effect of free surface of liquids in tanks.
For each type of non-consumable fluid, the free surface for any slack tank should be taken as the maximum free surface of that tank. For any tank which is empty or pressed the free surface may be taken as zero.
Critical Points The critical down flooding points are:
