ASTM C-76 or AASHTO M 170, Class III. High density polyethylene (HDPE) drainage pipe shall meet ASTM F2648 and have smooth interior and annular exterior corrugations.
HDPE drainage pipe joints shall meet ASTM F477 and fittings shall conform to ASTM
F2306.
b. Drainage Structures
1. Concrete and reinforced concrete shall conform to the requirements of Section

B. Cast-in-Place Concrete - 3500 psi permitted below grade.
C. Concrete Reinforcement - Section 32131.
3. EXCAVATION FOR PIPE CULVERTS, STORM DRAINS AND DRAINAGE
STRUCTURES
Excavation shall conform to applicable parts of Sections 33050.
4. TRENCH PREPARATION AND BEDDING
a. Bottom Preparation
The bottoms of trenches shall be accurately graded to provide uniform bearing
3 Division 33 - Utilities and support. Stones of 3" or greater shall be removed to avoid point bearing. The bottom of the trench shall be undercut a minimum of 4" so that at least the bottom quadrant of the pipe shall rest firmly on stone bedding for as nearly the full length of the barrel as proper jointing operations will permit.
33410-01
b. Bedding
The bedding surface for the pipe shall provide a firm foundation of uniform density throughout the entire length of the pipe. The pipe shall be bedded carefully in crushed stone foundation accurately shaped and rounded to conform to the lowest one-fourth of the outside portion of circular pipe or to the lower curved portion of pipe arch for the entire length of pipe or arch. Bell holes and depressions for joints shall be only of such length, depth and width as required for properly making the particular type joint.
5. PLACING PIPE
Each pipe shall be carefully examined before being placed, and defective or damaged pipe shall not be used. Pipelines shall be laid to the grades and alignment indicated.
Proper facilities shall be provided for lowering sections of pipe into trenches. Lifting lugs in vertically elongated metal pipe shall be placed in the same vertical plane as the major axis of the pipe. Under no circumstances shall pipe be laid in water, and no pipe shall be laid when trench conditions or weather are unsuitable for such work. Diversion of drainage or dewatering of trenches during construction shall be provided as necessary.
All pipe in-place shall be inspected before backfilling, and those damaged during placement shall be removed and replaced at no additional cost to the owner.
a. Concrete Pipe: Laying shall proceed upgrade with spigot ends of bell and spigot pipe and tongue ends of tongue-and-groove pipe pointing in the direction of the flow.
a. Polyethylene Pipe: Installation shall be in accordance with ASTM D2321 and ADS recommended installation guidelines (available at www.ads-pipe.com) with minimum compacted crushed stone bedding cover of one-foot in traffic areas.
6. BACKFILLING: All culverts and storm drains shall be backfilled with selected earth backfill and tamped in place. Storm drains placed in proposed or existing pavements shall be full depth DGA backfill.
7. APPLICABLE CODES: The intent of this section of the specification is that the contractor's bid on the work covered herein shall be based upon the drawings and specifications but that the work shall comply with all applicable codes and regulations as amended by any waivers.

Test pipe for soundness and clean interior and joint surfaces before lowering the pipe into the trench. Lay pipe on uniform grades between points where changes in alignment or grade are shown. Bed the pipe barrel firmly and uniformly as indicated on the detailed drawings. Check line and invert grade of each pipe by a method acceptable to the COR. Fit the pipes to form close concentric joints. Perform pumping or bailing as necessary to avoid laying the pipe in water and to protect joints. Keep a stopper in the pipe mouth when pipe laying is not in progress.
