JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD (JBLM) DESIGN STANDARDS

SECTION 33 30 00 - SANITARY SEWERS

Design Requirements

A. Layout

1. Construction of new sewer systems or extensions of existing systems will be allowed only if the existing receiving system is capable of supporting the added hydraulic load.

2. Collection and interceptor sewers shall be designed for the ultimate development of the tributary areas.

3. Sewer systems shall be designed and constructed to achieve total containment of sanitary wastes and maximum exclusion of infiltration and inflow.

B. Piping

1. Whenever possible, the sewer main shall run parallel to and 5 feet southerly or westerly of street centerline. The sewer main shall maintain a minimum 10-foot horizontal separation from proposed or existing water mains.

2. All sewers shall be designed to prevent damage from superimposed loads. Proper allowance for loads on the sewer because of the width and depth of trench should be made. When standard-strength sewer pipe is not sufficient, extra-strength pipe shall be used.

3. Deflection tests shall be performed on all flexible sewer mains and the deflection test limit shall be as specified in Section 33 30 00 of the Unified Facilities Guide Specifications. (UFGS)

4. Designer shall determine depth of pipe based on project requirements, and determine loading anticipated on pipe and select appropriate pipe. The allowable cover (finished grade) for the various types of pipe shall be as recommended by the manufacturer.

5. All pipe shall have a minimum of thirty-six (36) inches of cover. Side sewers constructed of flexible pipe materials shall have a minimum cover as appropriate for material and conditions.

6. The minimum slope for 8" gravity mains shall be 0.4% (except the minimum slope for dead end runs shall be 1.0% for 8" gravity mains) and the minimum slope for 6" side sewer laterals shall be 2.0%.

C. Manholes

1. The maximum distance between manholes shall be 400 feet.

2. All manholes shall be accessible to maintenance vehicles. Manholes located out of roadways shall be provided with a manhole locator marker post.

3. Terminating manholes, where sewer extension may occur, shall be provided with knock-outs and channeled accordingly.

4. Manholes shall be provided with a 0.10 foot drop across the channel.

5. All manhole lids shall have the word "sewer" cast integrally onto its surface.

6. Pipe connections to manholes shall be as follows:

• Flexible Pipe: Cast or grout a heavy duty sand collar, or equal manhole coupling into manhole wall.

• Rigid Pipe: Connect sewer pipe with a water-tight flexible rubber boot in manhole wall.

D. Side Sewers

1. Each side sewer lateral shall be equipped with a 6" x 6" tee, with an approved water-tight cap, located outside of the paved area.

2. Each side sewer lateral shall have an approved water-tight cap at the termination of the stub, it shall be "blocked" to resist the air pressure testing.

SECTION 33 30 00 Page 2

3. For side sewers that are not connected during construction, each side sewer lateral shall have a twelve (12) foot long, 2 x 4 wood "marker" at the termination of the stub. The "marker" shall extend from the bottom of the pipe to above finished grade. Above the ground surface, it shall be painted "white" with "S/S" and the total length of the 2 x 4, in feet, stenciled in black letters 2" high.

4. Side sewer connections allowed directly into manholes shall be constructed to match the sewer main crown and the manhole channeled accordingly.

E. Restoration: Road restoration shall be per JBLM Design Standards.

Notes to Designers on Drawing Content

a. Detailed plans shall be submitted for review which provide the location, size, type and direction of flow of the proposed sewers and the connection with existing sewers. These plans shall be separate from water plans unless otherwise directed by Public Works.

b. All survey control shall be based on the nearest Corps of Engineer’s benchmarks. Project plans shall have a horizontal scale of not more than 50 feet to the inch and a vertical scale of not more than 5 feet to the inch. Plans and profiles shall show:

• Locations of streets, existing utilities, and sewers, ground surface, pipe type, class and size, manhole stationing, invert and rim elevation at each manhole, and grade of sewer between adjacent manholes. All manholes shall be numbered on the plans and correspondingly numbered on the profile. Where there is any question of the sewer being sufficiently deep to serve any structure, the elevation and location of the basement floor, if basements are served, shall be plotted on the profile of the sewer which is to serve the structure in question. All sewers shall be sufficiently deep to serve adjacent basements, except where otherwise noted on the plans.

• All known existing structures, both above and below ground, which might interfere with the proposed construction, particularly water mains, gas mains, storm drains, overhead and underground power lines, telephone lines, and television cables shall be indicated including all utility easements.

• Details included in the plan set shall clearly show special sewer joints and cross-sections, and sewer appurtenances such as manholes and related items.

3.1.1.1 Location

The work covered by this section shall terminate at a point approximately 5 feet from the building.

Where the location of the sewer is not clearly defined by dimensions on the drawings, do not lay sewer line closer horizontally than 10 feet to a water main or service line. Install pressure sewer lines beneath water lines only, with the top of the sewer line being at least 2 feet below bottom of water line. Where sanitary sewer lines pass above water lines, encase sewer in concrete for a distance of 10 feet on each side of the crossing, or substitute rubber-gasketed pressure pipe for the pipe being used for the same distance. Where sanitary sewer lines pass below water lines, lay pipe so that no joint in the sewer line will be closer than 3 feet, horizontal distance, to the water line.

a. Sanitary piping installation parallel with water line:

1 Normal conditions: Sanitary piping or manholes shall be laid at least 10 feet horizontally from a water line whenever possible. The distance shall be measured edge-to-edge.

2 Unusual conditions: When local conditions prevent a horizontal separation of 10 feet, the sanitary piping or manhole may be laid closer to a water line provided that:

(a) The top (crown) of the sanitary piping shall be at least 18 inches below the bottom (invert) of the water main.

SECTION 33 30 00 Page 17

(b) Where this vertical separation cannot be obtained, the sanitary piping shall be constructed of AWWA-approved ductile iron water pipe pressure tested in place without leakage prior to backfilling.

(c) The sewer manhole shall be of watertight construction and tested in place.
