REPLACE 3-13.1. with the following:
"3-13.1. Touch Up of Chemical Conversion Coating of Aluminum and Aluminum Alloy Surfaces and Aluminum Lightning Mesh
WARNING
• Acetone is extremely flammable and toxic to eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Wear protective gloves and goggles/face shield. Avoid repeated or prolonged contact. Use only in well ventilated areas (or use approved respirator as determined by local safety/industrial hygiene personnel).
Keep away from open flames, sparks, hot surfaces or other sources of ignition.
WARNING
• Cleaning compound, MIL-PRF-85570 Type II, is an eye , skin, and respiratory tract irritant.
•Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Prolonged contact may cause dermatitis. Avoid breathing vapors. Avoid contact with strong acids or oxidizing agents. Use only in well ventilated areas. Wash hands

thoroughly after use. Launder contaminated clothing before re-use. Keep containers closed when not in use. Store in a cool, dry, well ventilated area.
• Protection: Wear chemical goggles, rubber gloves, face shield, and protective clothing; half-mask respirator with organic vapor cartridge required in poorly ventilate areas.
• If eye contact occurs, flush immediately with large amounts of water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention, If skin contact occurs, wash with soap and water, remove contaminated clothing and shoes. If inhalation occurs, move from area to fresh air.
a. Clean surface to be treated by scrubbing with MIL-PRF-85570, Type II cleaner (App. C, item 124) using a fine or very fine abrasive pad (A-A-58054, App. C, item 122). Rinse with clean distilled or deionized water. For water sensitive areas, clean surface with acetone (App C, item 1) using a fine or very fine abrasive pad (A-A-58054, App. C, item 122).
b. Using clean distilled or deionized water, check for a water break-free condition. A surface showing water breaks (water beading or incomplete wetting) is indicative of contamination, which will interfere with conversion coating. Repeat scrubbing cleaning process as needed to achieve a water break-free condition.
CAUTION
• Chemical Conversion Coating (MIL-DTL-81706) is a strong oxidizing agent that may ignite combustible material such as sawdust, rages, and paper or organic substances. Keep container closed; keep sparks, flames and heat away. Keep chemical conversion coating off skin, eyes, and clothes. May severely burn the eyes and skin on contact. Do not breathe vapors. Breathing dusts or mists may irritate the respiratory tract. Long term overexposure by breathing mists or absorption through the skin may cause cancer, kidney and liver damage, and ulceration of the nasal septum.
• Protection: goggles/face shield, apron, neoprene or polyvinyl gloves, NIOSH/MSHA approved respirator if mists exceed established exposure limits.
• Do not use chemical conversion coating materials on high-strength steel. Catastrophic failure may occur due to hydrogen embrittlement.
•Do not allow any aluminum chemical conversion coating materials to enter faying surfaces or other areas where the solutions cannot be adequately removed by rinsing as the residue will cause corrosion.

3-13.1.b.
3-13.1.c.
3-13.1.d.
CAUTION
Do not use steel, lead,, copper, or glass containers for holding/storing chemical conversion coating materials. use only acid-resistant plastic, rubber or stainless steel.
NOTE
MIL-DTL-81706 is chromate prepaint treatment for both bare and clad aluminum surfaces, including touch-up of scratched/damaged anodized aluminum. MIL-DTL-81706 has two types and two classes. Type I materials contain hexavalent chromium and Type II materials do not contain hexavalent chromium.
Class 1A coatings provide maximum protection against corrosion when left unpainted and superior adhesion when paint systems are applied.
Class 3 coatings are intended for use as a corrosion preventative film for electrical and electronic applications where low electrical resistance is required.
c. Immediately following cleaning and verification of a water break free surface condition, apply aluminum conversion coating material to the surface using the ready to us premixed liquid (FORM II) of MIL-DTL-81706 Class 1A or Class3. MIL-DTL-81706 Class 1 A (APP C, item 4) is used for most applications to provide for maximum protection against corrosion. Use of MIL-DTL-81706 Class 1A will meet the maximum 50 milliohm resistance re2qurement between repaired areas and adjacent wire mesh specified in paragraph 3-13.25. "Replace wire Mesh". MIL-DTL-81706 Class 3 (APP C, item 123) is to be used for protection against corrosion in applications where lower electrical resistance is required.
(1) Do not dry surface prior to applying ready to use Form III of MIL-DTL-81706 conversion coating.
(2) Apply treatment material to surface with a nonmetallic brush (App C, item 70), or low-lint cleaning cloth (App C, item 47). Keep surface wet with treatment material until a color change is noticeable (approximately 2 to 4 minutes). Depending upon the aluminum alloy, the color change will vary from iridescent yellow to golden brown in color.
(3) After color change, rinse treated surfaces with clean, cool distilled or deionized water.
(4) Allow treated surface to completely dry prior to painting, local heating up to too 140 F° (60° C) maximum may be used to accelerate drying.
NOTE
Alodine 1132 Touch-N-Prep (TNP) pens must be used within the expiration date noted on the individual pens. Shelf life for pens stored at room temperature is two (2) years from the date of manufacture. Pens can be used for a maximum of one (1) year after first use. Cap must be kept on pen when not in use to prevent evaporation.
d. MIL-DTL-81706 Form VI, Method D may also be used for touch up conversion coating in application requiring Class 1A or Class 3 conversion coating, using the Touch-N-Prep (TNP) Pen (App C, item 4 & item 123) pet TM 1-1500-344-23-2, Section 5-4.
(1) Surface must be water break free and dry prior to using the TNP pen.
(2) Use of TNP pens does not require water rinsing or wiping-off
