PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 PREPARATION

Prior to applying resinous flooring material, inspect substrate and immediately report any unsatisfactory conditions that exist and repair.

SECTION 09 67 23.13 Page 5

Verify that the concrete substrates are dry and the moisture-vapor emissions are within acceptable levels according to the manufacturer's written instructions.

3.1.1 Safety Precautions

Prior to application in confined spaces of toppings and coatings containing flammable or toxic properties, institute safety precautions recommended by the manufacturer of the product.

Erect "NO SMOKING" signs, and prohibit smoking or use of spark- or flame-producing devices within 50 feet of any mixing or placing operation involving flammable materials.

Provide the personnel required to handle, mix, or apply toppings containing toxic or flammable properties with such items of personal protective equipment and apparel for eye, skin, and respiratory protection as are recommended by the manufacturer of the product. Ensure all personnel are trained in the appropriate use and wearing of personal protection equipment.

3.1.2 Protection of Adjacent Surfaces

In addition to the protection of adjacent surfaces during installation, provide areas used to store and mix materials with a protective covering under the materials. After application of the sealer coats, protect finished flooring during the remainder of the construction period. In areas of expected minimum or moderate traffic, cover floors with a 30-30-30 waterproof kraft paper, with strips taped together and edges secured to prevent roll-up. Place vegetable fiberboard, plywood, or other suitable material that does not mar the flooring over the paper to protect areas used as passages by workmen and areas subject to floor damage because of subsequent building operations. Upon completion of construction, remove the protection, clean flooring and, where necessary, repair, reseal, or both, at no additional cost to the Government.

3.1.3 General Site Conditions

Products shall be provided by a single manufacturer.

Do not install the Work of this Section outside of the following environmental ranges with Manufacturers' written acceptance:

a. Material Temperature: Precondition material for at least 24 hours between 65 degrees to 75 degrees F (18 degrees to 24 degrees C)

b. Ambient Temperature: Minimum/Maximum 50 degrees/85 degrees F (10 degrees/30 degrees C)

c. Substrate Temperature: Minimum/Maximum 50 degrees /85degrees F (10 degrees/30 degrees C). Substrate temperature must be at least 5 degrees F (3 degrees C) above measured Dew Point.

d. Mixing and Application attempted at Material, Ambient and/or Substrate Temperature conditions less than 65 degrees F (18 degrees C) will result in a decrease in product workability and slower cure rates.

e. Relative Ambient Humidity: Minimum ambient humidity 30 percent, maximum ambient humidity 75 percent (during application and curing)

SECTION 09 67 23.13 Page 6

f. Measure and confirm Substrate Moisture Content, Ambient Relative Humidity, Ambient and Surface Temperature and Dew Point.

g. Surface must be clean, sound and dry. Remove dust, laitance, grease, curing compounds bond inhibiting impregnations, waxes and any other contaminants. All projections, rough spots, etc. should be dressed off to achieve a level surface prior to the application.

h. Maintain constant ambient room temperature of plus or minus 15 degrees F (plus or minus 7 degrees C) with a minimum temperature of 50 degrees F (10 degrees C) and maximum temperature of 85 degrees F (30 degrees C). Maintain constant ambient room temperature for 48 hours before, during and after installation, or until cured. Do not apply while ambient and temperatures are rising.

i. Erect suitable barriers and post legible signs at points of entry to prevent traffic and trades from entering the work area during application and cure period of the floor.

j. Insure adequate ventilation and air flow.

3.1.4 Concrete Subfloor

3.1.4.1 General

a. Ensure concrete substrate conforms to the minimum requirements of the flooring manufacturer.

b. Concrete substrate to have a minimum compressive strength of 3,500 psi (24 MPa) at 28 days and a minimum of 215 psi (1.5 MPa) in tension at time of application.

c. Cleaned and prepare to achieve laitance-free and contaminant-free, open textured surface by shot blasting or equivalent mechanical means (CSP level as per ICRI guidelines and manufacturer's written recommendation).

d. Chemical Surface Preparation: Chemical surface preparation (acid etching) is unacceptable and will void Manufacturer's warranty.

e. Control joints and cracks: Rout and fill, utilizing manufacturer's standard materials and installation details, approximately 1800 LF of existing control joints and approximately 520 LF of exposed cracks prior to flooring installation. Honor existing control joints by marking control joints to identify locations following flooring installation.

3.1.4.2 New Concrete Floors

Do not commence installation of the floor topping until the concrete has cured a minimum of 28 calendar days. Verify that the concrete floor is straight, properly sloped, and has wooden float type finish. Ensure that the concrete is moist cured with burlap or polyethylene. Before applying the prime coat, clean the concrete surface by an approved method.

3.1.4.3 Existing Concrete Floors

Clean existing concrete floors, with hard troweled or contaminated areas in conformance with ASTM D4259. Ensure the concrete is free of all paint, SECTION 09 67 23.13 Page 7 sealers, curing agents, oil, grease, moisture, dirt or any other contaminants. Remove any loose or corroded segments of existing concrete.

Patch with a grouting compound as recommended by the resinous flooring manufacturer.

3.1.4.4 Substrate Moisture

a. Moisture content of concrete substrate must be less than or equal to 4 percent by mass as measured with a Tramex® CME/CMExpert type concrete moisture meter.

b. Additionally, relative humidity tests may be conducted per ASTM F2170 and values must be less than or equal to 85 percent.

c. Confirm and record above values at least once every 3 hours during installation, or more frequently whenever conditions change (e.g.

Ambient Temperature rise/fall, Relative Humidity increase/decrease, etc.).

d. Provide low perm moisture tolerant primer.

3.2 APPLICATION

a. Mix and apply material with strict adherence to manufacturer's written installation procedures and coverage rates.

b. Follow Manufacturer's written recommendations on terminations and connections to walls, drains, doorways, columns and floor-to-floor transitions.

c. Do not apply while ambient and substrate temperatures are rising.

d. Apply resinous flooring with care to ensure that no laps, voids, or other marks or irregularities are visible, and with an appearance of uniform color, sheen and texture, all within limitations of materials and areas concerned.

e. Match colors and textures of approved samples.

f. Sawcut previously marked existing control joints and fill with semi-rigid jointing compound compatible with the resinous flooring system used.

g Hangar Markings: Place striping, markings and grounding rod markers as shown on the drawings and in order of presidance as indicated on the drawings. When the second topcoat is within its recoat window, apply marking of the color indicated (red, yellow, black or green ) urethane topcoat at 3.0 mils- (75 microns-) DFT. Use solvent resistant tape to protect the floor coating against stripe coat bleed. A thin clear coat of either epoxy or urethane may be required to prevent strip coat bleed prior to the full application of the colored stripe coat. Completely hide the topcoat color with the color indicated, in one coat. If insufficient hiding occurs, apply one additional coat. Apply grounding rod markings using similar procedures, urethane topcoat, and colors and size coordinated with Contracting Officer.

SECTION 09 67 23.13 Page 8

3.3 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

3.3.1 Repairing

Remove and replace damaged or unacceptable portions of completed work with new work to match adjacent surfaces at no additional cost to the Government.

3.4 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING

Clean surfaces of the new work, and adjacent surfaces soiled as a result of the work. Remove all equipment, surplus materials, and rubbish associated with the work from the site.
