Fire Station - Mansfield Ohio ANG
3. Information Requested: (Include Specification Section and/or Drawing Number and Page if inquiring about a discrepancy)
After looking at this project and running truss designs, we have come to the conclusion that loads
(including the 140 PSF blast loading per note #4 under CFS trusses on sheet S-003) and the spacing of the trusses is too much for LGS trusses. The main problem it the clear span stepdown girder at the top of the layout (closest to gridline 3).
We have tried to use up to 12 GA. material (maximum gauge) and 3-ply (maximum number of plies per engineers) trusses, and also tried to drop the spacing of the trusses to 24.0” on center. We are unable to get all the trusses to work.
If there is any possibility of interior bearings, please let us know.

Response:
Attached is a structural steel truss we designed as part of a comparative study. The required steel sections aren’t that large so we believe a comparable truss built from cold-formed steel is viable. However, we recognize the heavier sections may preclude some truss manufacturers due to local material availability, in-house engineering, and/or limits on proprietary systems.
The attached structural steel truss is an acceptable alternative to the cold-formed girder trusses.
