HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL

GENERAL

This manual contains all descriptive, operational, troubleshooting and maintenance information required to operate and main-tain the Accessory Kit: Vehicular: Entry Point Vehicle Kit (EPVK).

CONTENT OF MANUAL

This manual is divided into 5 chapters:

Chapter 1, General Information, Equipment Description, and Theory of Operation Chapter 2, Operator Instructions Chapter 3, Troubleshooting Procedures Chapter 4, Maintenance Instructions Chapter 5, Supporting Information

HOW TO ACCESS INFORMATION

The easiest way to find information is by using the Table of Contents located at the front of the manual.

The chapters are divided into work packages (WP). Each WP is assigned a four digit sequence number. The sequence num-bers run consecutively throughout the manual. WPs added after initial publication follow a point numbering scheme to create a new sequence number that logically fits between the two existing WP numbers (e.g., 0005.1 is a WP added between WPs 0005 and 0006). WP page numbers are numbered consecutively and consist of the WP sequence number followed by -1, -2, -3, etc. (e.g., 0005-1, 0005-2, etc.). Each WP begins with page number -1.

SUPPORTING ILLUSTRATIONS

All supporting illustrations are located on the same or facing page as the text they support. Illustrations are labeled with call-outs in the text, for example:

CORROSION PREVENTION AND CONTROL (CPC)

Corrosion Prevention and Control (CPC) of Army materiel is a continuing concern. It is important that any corrosion prob-lems with this item be reported so that the problem can be corrected and improvements can be made to prevent the problem in future items.

Corrosion specifically occurs with metals. It is an electrochemical process that causes the degradation of metals. It is com-monly caused by exposure to moisture, acids, bases, or salts. An example is the rusting of iron. Corrosion damage in metals can be seen, depending on the metal, as tarnishing, pitting, fogging, surface residue, and/or cracking.

Plastics, composites, and rubbers can also degrade. Degradation is caused by thermal (heat), oxidation (oxygen), solvation (solvents), or photolytic (light, typically UV) processes. The most common exposures are excessive heat or light. Damage from these processes will appear as cracking, softening, swelling, and/or breaking.

SF Form 368, Product Quality Deficiency Report, should be submitted to the address specified in DA PAM 750-8, The Army Maintenance Management System (TAMMS) Users Manual.

DESTRUCTION OF ARMY MATERIEL TO PREVENT ENEMY USE

EPVK should be destroyed by any method available so it cannot be used by unfriendly personnel.

OPERATING SOLID STATE SECURITY ILLUMINATION MAT SYSTEM (SS-SIMS)

INITIAL SETUP:

GENERAL

The Solid State Security Illumination Mat System (SS-SIMS) is used for day or night checkpoint operations to illuminate the undercarriage of vehicles for easier inspection.

INSTALLING AND OPERATING SS-SIMS

WARNING

The SS-SIMS weighs approximately 58 pounds, and requires a two-person lift. Failure to use a two-person lift can result in injury to personnel.

If moving the SS-SIMS, it is best to separate the system into smaller sections and use multiple trips to move, or injury to personnel or equipment can occur.

Use caution when walking around the SS-SIMS. The cords can be a tripping hazard, resulting in injury to per-sonnel.

Before starting the installation of the SS-SIMS, determine the best location that will direct traffic straight to and over the light-ing system. When inspecting the undercarriage of the vehicle, it should be positioned so that it straddles the lighting system.

If at all possible, position the SS-SIMS to avoid contact with the vehicle tires.

The SS-SIMS is designed to accept power from either the left or right so assembly is dependent on the location of an AC power source.

CAUTION

To prevent damage to the LED and power cord, vehicle tires should contact the power cord protectors only.

NOTE

The SS-SIMS is located in Box 1 of 3 of the Entry Point Vehicle Kit (EPVK).

1. Position the transformer and AC power cord assembly and DC power cord in the direction of the power source. DO NOT plug into the power outlet at this time.

Drop the inner protector over the top of the studs on the end of the outer protector and press firmly into place.

NOTE

The supplied nails and washers are only used for a more permanent application. If the plan is to keep the SS-SIMS as a portable unit, store the nails and washers for future use.

0018-5

12. If placing the SS-SIMS in a permanent setup, the provided nails should be used to secure the various pieces, such as the cross braces and the power cord protectors, to the ground.

Use the 8-inch nails in soft ground (such as dirt or sand), and the 2-inch nails in hard ground (such as asphalt or concrete).

All the nails should be used, place them in such a way that the SS-SIMS does not shift from position when the vehicles drive over it.

Use the washers with the 2-inch nails, placing them between the nail head and the pieces of the SS-SIMS, such as the cross braces and power cord protectors.

WARNING

Use caution when walking around the SS-SIMS. The cords can be a tripping hazard, resulting in injury to per-sonnel.

13. Extend the remaining electrical cord away from the SS-SIMS toward the electrical outlet. DO NOT insert the plug into the outlet at this time.

CAUTION

The connection from the DC power cord to the AC transformer is a two-pin connection. Ensure the pins are aligned before firmly pressing the connectors together. Damage to the pins can occur if they are misaligned.

14. Insert the single socket connection from the DC power cord into the plug connector on the AC transformer.

CAUTION

Ensure the plug connectors are fully seated to ensure that the power flows correctly to the light strips, or the system might not work correctly.

15. Follow the instructions in the previous step with the two socket and plug connectors from the DC power cord to the light strips.

0018-6

WARNING

Use caution when walking around the SS-SIMS. The cords can be a tripping hazard, resulting in injury to per-sonnel.

CAUTION

To avoid damage to equipment, ensure the foot pedal and foot pedal air hose are placed on the same side as the power source.
