AN/PSS-14 Site Training Lane Preparation Instructions
This attachment is written as a stand-alone document and describes the instructions for preparing Explosive Hazard Detection Lanes for the AN/PSS-14 program.
SITE PLANNING AND PREPARATION
The sites chosen will be part of the Urban Assault Course (UAC) identified in Training Circular 90-1, Training for Urban Operations. The training lanes will be installed and identified as Station 6 Explosive Hazard Detection. Government personnel will coordinate with the installation Range Control to ensure area is appropriate to install training lanes, be fairly level and free of heavy vegetation, and obtain necessary permits. Grass is tolerable, but will have to be mowed with brush and trees removed by Range Control. The size of the area depends on the number of training lanes to be installed with the standard configuration as 12 lanes. If a location does not have the available real estate, less than 12 lanes will be installed. Figure 1 depicts typical examples of 12 lane configurations that require an area of 25 meters by 140 meters or 50 meters by 70 meters. To prevent the AN/PSS-14 detectors from interfering with each other, each lane must be at least 10 meters apart from adjacent lanes.
Figure 1. Typical Training Lane and Footprint Area Layout
The lanes and footprints will have to be sanitized of all metal debris using the AN/PSS- 14 metal detector (see Figure 2). The beginning and end borders of a lane should be sanitized at least one meter beyond their border. Also, half a meter of the outside lateral limits of each lane should be clear and sanitized. A one meter distance around each footprint shall be free of clutter. Metal detector sensitivity or ability to detect metal objects is directly correlated with the AN/PSS-14 sensor head height off the ground. The higher the sensor head the less metal the metal detector detects. To ensure metal debris is removed consistently, the sensor head must be placed on the ground when sweeping to locate and remove metal objects. Native soil from the site shall be used when filling in holes where metallic clutter was removed. Do not introduce different soil such as top soil since that will introduce false alarms from the ground penetrating radar.
Figure 2. Metal Free Lane and Footprints

The Contractor shall store equipment and material at a secure location provided by the UAC manager.
TRAINING SITE PREPARATION
1. The typical AN/PSS-14 training site will contain twelve training lanes, and eight footprint pits. Training lanes will be used to train new operators and validate current operators. To maintain a high quality and consistent training program, all training lanes must be prepared to exact dimensions, and the placement of the training targets must comply with standards. Footprint pits are used to train new operators on the proper detection techniques and how to pinpoint Explosive Hazard locations. Figure 1 shows two examples of training lane layout based on available real estate. The site survey with the Government representative will be performed to determine the appropriate number of lanes and layout based on available real estate at each location.
2. The training lane overall dimensions are 1.5 meters by 15 meters. They are made up of ten cells. Each cell is 1.5 meters by 1.5 meters. To avoid electronic interference between detectors, training lanes must be at least 10 meters apart. Each lane must be designated as A, B, and so forth, and each cell should be numbered 1, 2, 3, and so forth for key reference and grading purposes. Footprint pits can be located near the starting point of the training lanes or in between lanes. Their dimensions are 1.5 meters by 1.5 meters.
3. The training lanes and footprint pits are constructed of 4" PVC Pipe buried in ground at beginning of lane left (BOLL), beginning of lane right (BOLR), end of lane left (EOLL), end of lane right (EOLR). 2"x4"x12” pressure treated wood with nylon screws will be inserted in the PVC Pipe. Plastic chain will then be linked to nylon screw to identify left (Orange chain) and right (Yellow Chain) lateral limits. Black zip ties will be used to mark 1.5 meter downtrack location on the plastic chain to identify the beginning or end of each cell in a lane. Figure 3 shows Final Lane
Construction.

GRADING MATRIX CONSTRUCTION
1. The grading matrix will be used during lane preparation when placing training targets (simulated mines or IED training targets) in the lanes and to grade students’ performance during practical exercises and certification. It must be made to exact specifications.
2. The grading matrix is a square frame, made from 1 ½-inch or 2-inch PVC pipe and 90-degree elbows. The PVC pipe must be cut so the distance between the inside corners of the elbows are 1.5 meters. Cut four equal lengths of pipe and assemble the four elbows into a square frame. Use glue to assemble the frame. Drill nine holes through each side of the frame at 15- centimeter intervals so twine can be strung through to make a grid pattern in the frame (see Figure 4). Label the frame vertically 1 through 10 and horizontally L, then A through I. These reference numbers will be used to specify the location of training targets and clutter in each cell.

TRAINING TARGET INSTALLATION
1. Training targets are a combination of simulated mines and simulated Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) (identified in Table 1). None of these targets have or will contain explosive materials. The UAC range manager will sign for long-term loan or complete ownership of the AN/PSS-14 Training Target Set (TTS), which are the mine simulants, from the base Training Support Center. The PM will send the IED components to the site per Range Control guidance. A complete set of 119 simulated mines/IEDs and metallic clutter, sufficient for 12 training lanes and 8 footprint pits will be available from the Training Support Center and PM.

Figure 5. Training Target Set
2. The training targets are buried at a specified depth measured from the top of the target in accordance with Table 1 for the 12 lanes. The training targets are buried flush to the surface in the footprints. The lanes should simulate the combat environment as much as possible, and when sweeping for Explosive Hazards the Soldier may detect a target at the edge of their sweeping area. Therefore, the contractor shall place at least one training target per lane on the inside edge of the training lane. Figure 6 below illustrates a complete, 12-lane training area of target and clutter locations with a legend listing the 16 different types of training targets.
3. The training targets and clutter quantity are specified for each cell.
Emplacement of the items can be anywhere within the cell for training lanes. The training targets emplaced in the footprints need to be located as shown in Figure 7.
4. The depth and location of the training targets and clutter items in the cell must also be recorded using the grid marks on the grading matrix. Figure 8 shows a simulated mine a n d clu tte r i tems being emplaced. Its depth and location will be recorded on the lane key using the grading matrix as a reference.

LANE KEYS
1. Each training location must have a lane key. The lane key is a record of the location of each training target and pieces of clutter in the lane. The contractor shall generate the lane key while emplacing training targets and clutter using the grading matrix. Table 2 shows a sample lane key for lane A with the training target identification and location in each cell, along with the description and location of each clutter item.
