SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
• To avoid electrical shock, do not tamper with or use a damaged metal detector.
• Do not immerse the metal detector in water.
• Do not use the metal detector for more than 50 minutes per hour. The operator should allow 10 minutes to rest hand and wrist.
• Do not touch the detection area (SENSOR) against bare skin. Contact may cause a skin rash and/or damage the detection area (SENSOR).
• Use caution when handling the battery. Do not puncture or mutilate the battery. Do not handle a damaged battery. Do not inhale battery fumes.
• Any leaking or damaged batteries must be discarded in according with local
Standing Operating Procedure (SOP).
RISK ASSESSMENT

FOLLOWING ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS
AND NOTES THE RESIDUAL RISK FOR THIS
TASK IS REDUCED TO LOW
RESIDUAL RISK - LOW
ENVIRONMENTAL
CONSIDERATIONS
IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF ALL SOLDIERS AND DA CIVILIANS TO
PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT FROM DAMAGE. BASED ON ITS
COMMITMENT TO ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION, THE ARMY WILL
CONDUCT ITS OPERATIONS IN WAYS THAT MINIMIZE
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS. THE ARMY WILL COMPLY WITH ALL
ENVIRONMENTAL LAWS AND REGULATIONS. THIS INCLUDES
FEDERAL, STATE, LOCAL, AND HOST NATION LAWS, SOME OF
WHICH ARE OUTLINED IN TC 3-34.489, THE SOLDIER AND THE
ENVIRONMENT, 26 OCT 2001, APPENDIX B.
Batteries must be discarded in according with local Standing Operating Procedure (SOP).
EVALUATIONS
THERE WILL BE NO EVALUATION FOR
THIS PERIOD OF INSTRUCTION.
INSTRUCTIONAL LEAD-IN
The PORTABLE METAL DETECTOR is designed to detect metal carried by people or objects. The shape of the scanner makes it easy to use for detecting weapons, detonators, or other pieces of metal on people or in parcels, baggage, correspondence, fabric, etc. It detects ferrous metals (containing iron), non-ferrous metals, and stainless steel. It uses a 9-volt Alkaline battery with a maximum endurance of 60 hours of normal use.
ENABLING LEARNING
OBJECTIVE (ELO)
lesson #1
CONDUCT POWER POINT AND HANDS ON FAMILIARIZATION
ON THE
CONDITIONS AND STANDARDS ARE THE
SAME AS PREVIOUSLY STATED
WARNING SUMMARY
• To avoid electrical shock, do not use a damaged or tampered metal detector and do not immerse the metal detector in water.
• Do not inhale battery fumes.
• Any leaking or damaged batteries must be discarded in according with local Standing Operating Procedure (SOP).
1) ON/OFF Switch: Turns the metal detector off and on.
2) Ready light (Green): Indicates the unit is ready to detect.
3) Low Battery Light (Amber): Indicates low battery power.
4) Alert Light (Red) Indicates metal object detected.
5) Interference Elimination Button Can be set to reduce interference.
• Safety Sling Slips around wrist to prevent the operator from dropping the detector.
• Detection Area (Sensor) Main sensor that detects metal.
• Speaker Provides a clear audible sound whenever metal is detected.
• Rubber Weatherproof Handle Allows user to firmly grip detector.
• Battery Cover Remains securely in place at all times but can easily be opened for changing the battery with no tools.
Part number .........................GMD1165185
Dimensions..........................16.5 x 3.25 x 1.62 in. (42 x 8.3 x 4.13 cm)
Weight .................................17.6 oz (499 g)
Temperature range..............-35º to 158º F (-37º to 70º C)
Voltage ................................6.8 to 10 Vdc
WARNING
To avoid electrical shock, do not immerse the metal detector in water.
The metal detector should not be used during wet weather
CAUTION
Do not attach metallic labels to the detection area (sensor) of the metal detector. The detector’s efficiency may become reduced.
CAUTION
Do not attach metallic labels to the Detection Area of the scanner. The scanner’s efficiency may become reduced.
OPERATING PROCEDURES
1. Put hand through the safety sling and grip the handle.
2. Use the ON/OFF button to turn on the metal detector. There will be a short sound and the green ready light turns on. The green ready light remains on while the power switch is in the ON position.
3. Wave the detector within 2 inches around the person or object being inspected. When metal is detected, the detector makes a siren sound and the red alert light turns on.
4. If necessary, press the interference elimination button on the underside of the scanner to briefly eliminate detection of any nearby metal objects such as metal walls.
NOTE
When the battery is down to 10%, the amber low battery light turns on and the detection sound changes from a siren to a steady tone. There is approximately one hour of operational time remaining on the scanner.
REPLACING BATTERY
The battery cover is designed to slide off the handle. To avoid damage to the battery cover or handle, do not try to pry off the battery cover.
1. Ensure the metal detector is turned off.
2. Slide the battery cover off the bottom of the handle.
3. If necessary, remove the old 9-volt battery.
The battery cover will not be able to be re-attached if the battery is incorrectly installed.
4. Install a new 9-volt battery, ensuring correct polarity.
5. Slide the battery cover onto the handle until it clicks it place.
The Handheld Metal Detector uses NSN 6135-00-900-2139 Battery, Non rechargeable: 9-volt
UNUSUAL ENVIRONMENT/
WEATHER
WARNING
To avoid electrical shock, do not immerse the metal detector in water.
The metal detector should not be used during wet weather.
TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURES
The troubleshooting work packages contain tables listing the malfunctions, tests or inspections, and corrective actions required to return the metal detector to normal operation. Perform the steps in the order they appear in the tables.
TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURES
MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
The Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services(PMCS) provides procedures to ensure that the metal detector and it’s components are in operating condition.
