HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL
GENERAL
This manual contains all descriptive, operational, troubleshooting and maintenance information required to operate and maintain the Translation Device.
CONTENT OF MANUAL
This manual is divided into 7 chapters:
Chapter 1, General Information, Equipment Description, and Theory of Operation Chapter 2, Operator Instructions Chapter 3, Operator Troubleshooting Procedure Chapter 4, Field Troubleshooting Procedures Chapter 5, Operator Maintenance Instructions Chapter 6, Field Maintenance Instruction Chapter 7, Supporting Information iii
HOW TO ACCESS INFORMATION
The easiest way to find information is by using the Table of Contents located at the front of the manual.
The chapters are divided into work packages (WP). Each WP is assigned a four digit sequence number. The sequence num-bers run consecutively throughout the manual. WPs added after initial publication follow a point numbering scheme to create a new sequence number that logically fits between the two existing WP numbers (e.g., 0005.1 is a WP added between WPs 0005 and 0006). WP page numbers are numbered consecutively and consist of the WP sequence number followed by -1, -2, - 3, etc. (e.g., 0005-1, 0005-2, etc.). Each WP begins with page number -1.

GENERAL INFORMATION
SCOPE
This Technical Manual (TM) contains instructions for operating and maintaining the Entry Control Point (ECP) Translation Device.
Type of Manual: Operator and Field Maintenance.
Model Number(s) and Equipment Name(s): Translation Device: Entry Control Point (ECP).
Purpose of Equipment: The Translation Device allows the user to communicate with non-English speaking personnel through the use of generic phrases which are pre-recorded in a variety of different languages.
MAINTENANCE FORMS, RECORDS, AND REPORTS
Department of the Army forms and procedures used for equipment maintenance will be those prescribed by (as applicable) DA PAM 750-8, The Army Maintenance Management System (TAMMS) Users Manual, or AR 700-138, Army Logistics Readiness and Sustainability.
REPORTING EQUIPMENT IMPROVEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS (EIR)
If your Translation Device needs improvement, let us know. Send us an EIR. You, the user, are the only one who can tell us what you don’t like about your equipment. Let us know why you don’t like the design or performance. If you have Internet access, the easiest and fastest way to report problems or suggestions is to go to https://aeps.ria.army.mil/aepspublic.cfm (scroll down and choose the “Submit Quality Deficiency Report” bar). The Internet form lets you choose to submit an Equipment Improvement Recommendation (EIR), a Product Quality Deficiency Report (PQDR) or a Warranty Claim Action (WCA).
You may also submit your information using an SF Form 368, Product Quality Deficiency Report. You can send your SF Form 368 via e-mail, regular mail, or facsimile using the addresses/facsimile numbers specified in DA PAM 750-8, The Army Maintenance Management System (TAMMS) Users Manual. We will send you a reply.
CORROSION PREVENTION AND CONTROL (CPC)
Corrosion Prevention and Control (CPC) of Army materiel is a continuing concern. It is important that any corrosion problems with this item be reported so that the problem can be corrected and improvements can be made to prevent the problem in future items.
Corrosion specifically occurs with metals. It is an electrochemical process that causes the degradation of metals. It is commonly caused by exposure to moisture, acids, bases, or salts. An example is the rusting of iron. Corrosion damage in metals can be seen, depending on the metal, as tarnishing, pitting, fogging, surface residue, and/or cracking.
Plastics, composites, and rubbers can also degrade. Degradation is caused by thermal (heat), oxidation (oxygen), solvation (solvents), or photolytic (light, typically UV) processes. The most common exposures are excessive heat or light. Damage from these processes will appear as cracking, softening, swelling, and/or breaking.
SF Form 368, Product Quality Deficiency Report, should be submitted to the address specified in DA PAM 750-8, The Army Maintenance Management System (TAMMS) Users Manual.
DESTRUCTION OF ARMY MATERIEL TO PREVENT ENEMY USE
The Translation Device should be destroyed by any method so it cannot be used by unfriendly personnel.

DESCRIPTION AND DATA
EQUIPMENT CHARACTERISTICS, CAPABILITIES, AND FEATURES
The Translation Device is a ruggedized, self-contained, hand-held device that matches English phrases to pre-recorded phrases in a target language. Phrases can be accessed using the color touch screen, hardware buttons, the user’s voice or any combination of these. Phrases are grouped into modules for specific use cases. For example, there is a force protection phrase module developed for the military that contains phrase categories such as check point, disturbance and medical emergency.
The phrase modules reside on a removable 1 gigabyte secure digital (SD) card provided with the device. The software restricts each module size to 1000 phrases, but the SD card can hold many modules.
The Translation Device uses a directional microphone to block out background noise. The voice recognition software on the device uses universal voice recognition technology and therefore it can be used by anyone speaking English regardless of accent and without any specialized training.
Its dual battery slot has a rechargeable lithium batteries that provides 6 hours of continuous operation. The battery slot will also hold four AA batteries which will provide no more than 8 hours of use.

LANGUAGE MODULES
INITIAL SETUP:
LANGUAGE MODULES
Language modules are the foundation of the Translation Device Version 3.0 Application. They are discrete groups of English phrases with corresponding foreign language translations. Phrases are designed and categorized, then text-translated and audio-recorded in multiple languages. Recordings are compiled into a finished language module and stored on an SD card for use on the device.
NOTE
Since the Translation Device can be distributed with different software packages that include different languages from various global regions, as well as different situation modules, screenshots observed can vary from those in the instructions. Screenshots should be viewed only as a general guide for navigating through the functions of the device.
The Translation Device comes with language modules, or sets of phrases translated into various languages, that are customized to specific situational communication needs. Modules are pre-loaded on the SD card. If there is only one module loaded on the SD card, then the module will automatically load.
