About this file
The document is a technical specification section (SECT-43_SERVICE_LATERALS.docx) detailing service lateral construction requirements for a municipal infrastructure project. The specification covers the technical standards for constructing gravity sewer service laterals, including detailed requirements for pipe materials, excavation, pipe laying, termination points, and restoration. Service laterals are defined as branch gravity sewers constructed from main gravity sewers to property right-of-way lines, with specifications mandating 4-inch diameter pipes for residential single services and 6-inch diameter pipes for dual services and commercial/industrial areas.
The specification provides comprehensive technical guidance for contractors, including requirements for pipe materials (PVC or ductile iron), minimum grading (one foot per 100 feet), connection methods, and installation standards. Key technical requirements include using approved fittings, maintaining straight pipe alignment, installing water-tight end plugs, providing clean-outs, and marking service lateral termination points by etching an "S" in concrete curb or pavement. The document is part of a broader set of municipal infrastructure specifications, with cross-references to other sections covering excavation, backfilling, and inspection protocols.

43.7 LOCATION
43.1 GENERAL
A service lateral is a branch gravity sewer constructed from the main gravity sewer to the right-of-way line or to a point established by the CITY.
The general requirements for construction of gravity sewers in Sections 40 and 41 of these Specifications shall apply for service laterals unless they are inconsistent with the provisions of this section.
Service laterals and fittings shall be four (4) inches in diameter for single services in residential areas and six (6) inches in diameter for all dual services and in all commercial/industrial areas.
43.2 MATERIALS
43.2.1 PIPE, FITTINGS & JOINTS
Pipe, fittings and joints shall be PVC or DI pipe and shall conform to the requirement for gravity sewer construction in Section 40 of these specifications.
Service laterals shall be connected to the wye, provided in the gravity sewer where such is available, utilizing approved fittings or adapters.
On existing mains where no wye is provided or available, connection shall be made by either cutting in a wye with a solid sleeve, or a dog house type manhole.
43.3 CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
43.3.1 GENERAL
Service lateral connections shall conform to these specifications and STANDARD DRAWINGS. All necessary approvals for service sewer construction shall be obtained prior to beginning the work.
43.3.2 EXCAVATION AND BACKFILL
Excavation and backfilling for service sewers shall conform to the requirements of Section 32 and 41, excepting that no backfill in excess of that required to hold the pipe in true alignment shall be placed prior to inspection.
43.3.3 PIPE LAYING AND JOINTING
Pipe laying and jointing, except as hereinafter provided, shall in general conform to the requirements of Section 41. During the pipe laying and jointing, the service lateral shall be kept free of any water, dirt or objectionable matter.
43.3.4 LINE AND GRADE
Pipe shall be laid with a minimum grade of one foot per 100 feet. The CONTRACTOR shall establish such alignment and grade control as is necessary to properly install the service sewer. Pipe shall be laid in a straight line at a uniform grade between fittings.
43.4 TERMINATION OF SERVICE LATERALS
Service laterals shall terminate at the right-of-way line in accordance with the STANDARD DRAWINGS. Water-tight factory made plug(s) shall be installed at the end of each service lateral. Clean-out shall be provided at the end of each service lateral as per the standard drawings. [All services shall be of the single connection type and be marked by a buried electronic marker, and a vertical PVC or wood 2”X4” visual marker (above ground.)]
43.5 INSPECTION
Service sewers shall meet the inspection requirements specified in Section 40.5.
43.6 RESTORATION, FINISHING AND CLEANUP
The CONTRACTOR shall restore all paved surfaces, curbing, sidewalks or other surfaces to their original condition. All surplus material and temporary structures, as well as all excess excavation shall be removed and the entire site shall be left in a neat and clean condition.
43.7 LOCATION
The exact location of the termination point of each installed service lateral shall be marked by etching or cutting an "S" in the concrete curb or pavement. (Termination point shall be per Section 43.4 of these specifications.)
