About this file
This document is a Task Group Instruction (TGI) for cleaning, inspecting, repairing, and preserving the clean salt water ballast tank (9-98-1-W) on the USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC-19). The TGI details specific maintenance procedures including visual inspection of the tank's preservation coating, marking corroded or damaged areas, general cleaning at Level III, manhole cover installation, welding and repair of bolting ring holes, and repair of tank surfaces involving up to one linear foot of weld repair, 60 square inches of base metal weld buildup, 10 square feet of plate replacement, and 4 linear feet of stiffener replacement.
The work is part of a larger ship repair and maintenance contract with a planned contractor work period from January 12, 2026 to May 15, 2027. The instruction includes specific requirements for nondestructive testing, surface preservation, and adherence to multiple technical references. Special requirements include SURFMEPP cleanliness standards, a potential lead hazard, and work that affects a fire zone boundary necessitating a non-flammable closure. The task will be performed at multiple locations including the salt water ballast tank, Intel Storeroom, and Chemical Warfare Defense Equipment Storeroom.
