About this file
This is a technical specification document for spray applications, seal coats, and surface treatments of asphalt concrete pavements at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma, dated April 2019.
The specification covers furnishing and installation of materials for seal coat applications on asphalt pavements, with products required to match existing materials or be directed by the Contracting Officer. Bituminous materials must comply with ASTM D 2028 Grade RC-250 (liquid asphalt) or ASTM D 490 Grade RT-6 (tar). Aggregates shall consist of crushed stone, crushed gravel, or crushed slag, meeting ODOT SSHC Section 703.04 gradation requirements. Equipment specifications include bituminous distributors capable of applying 0.05 to 2.0 gallons per square yard at 25 to 75 lbs./sq. in. pressure with allowable variation not exceeding 5 percent; power rollers weighing not less than 5 tons; pneumatic-tired rollers with adjustable gross weight of 200 to 350 lbs./inch of compacting width; and aggregate spreading equipment with adjustable application rates.
Surface preparation requires cleaning all cracks with compressed air, filling cracks wider than one-fourth inch with compatible sealer materials, and removing all loose material using power brooms or blowers. Application procedures mandate uniform distribution of sealcoat immediately following surface preparation, with application temperature providing viscosity between 10 and 60 seconds Saybolt Furol. Seal aggregate must be applied within 5 minutes of bituminous material application. Rolling operations shall utilize pneumatic-tired rollers primarily, with steel-wheeled rollers in supplementary capacity only. Surplus aggregate must be swept and removed between 24 to 72 hours after rolling. Testing requirements include stripping tests per ASTM D 3625, gradation tests per ASTM C 136 once daily per material source, water compatibility tests, application rate sampling at three samples per 1,000 square yards, and friction testing per FAA AC 150/5320-12 for airfield applications. Traffic control requires 48-hour protection of treated areas with MUTCD-compliant warning signs and barricades, with removal within 24 hours of final project acceptance.
