About this file
This is a technical specification document for bituminous rejuvenation work at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma, dated April 2019. The specification covers the rejuvenation of existing bituminous airfield pavements, roads, streets, parking areas, and other general applications using chemical rejuvenators.
The rejuvenator product must be composed of a petroleum resin-oil base uniformly emulsified with water and must meet specific physical and chemical requirements, including viscosity of 15-40 Saybolt Furol seconds at 77°F, residue content of 0-65 percent minimum, sieve test maximum of 0.10 percent, viscosity at 140°F of 80-500 centistokes, and a flash point minimum of 350°F (Cleveland Open Cup). The mineral aggregate used must meet defined gradation requirements, passing 100 percent through No. 16 sieve, 40-75 percent through No. 30, 4-12 percent through No. 50, and 0-5 percent through No. 100. Government approval of all materials is required prior to use, with submittals including product data, samples, certificates, and manufacturer's instructions. The rejuvenator shall be applied uniformly at a rate of 0.06 gallons per square yard with an allowable variation of plus or minus 20 percent at the temperature recommended by the manufacturer. Surface preparation must remove all loose material, dirt, clay, and other objectionable materials immediately before application. The contractor must provide approved mineral aggregate to blot up any excess rejuvenator material remaining on the treated surface after 24 hours, and if the actual application rate falls more than 20 percent below the approved rate, subsequent applications must be made within 24 hours to ensure adequate penetration.

SECTION 32 01 22
BITIMINOUS REJUVENATION
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 Scope
This specification covers the rejuvenation of existing bituminous airfield pavements, roads, streets, parking areas, and other general applications by the use of a chemical rejuvenator.
1.2 Submittals
Government approval of all materials is required prior to use. The following is to be submitted in accordance with Section 01 33 00;
SUBMITTAL PROCEDURES: SD-03 Product Data SD-04 Samples SD-07 Certificates SD-08 Manufacturer’s Instructions
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 Rejuvenator
The asphalt rejuvenating agent shall be composed of a petroleum resin-oil base uniformly emulsified with water and shall conform to the following physical and chemical requirements:
Property Test Method Requirement
Viscosity, S.F at 77 oF, sec. ASTM D 244 15 - 40
Residue, % 1 ASTM D 244(mod.) 0 – 65 (min)
Sieve Test, % ASTM D 244 (Mod.) 0.10 (max.)
Viscosity @ 140 oF, ASTM D 2170 80 - 500 Centistokes 2
Flash Point, Cleveland Open ASTM D 92 350 (min.)
Cup (COC), oF 3
1 ASTM D 244 Modified Evaporation Test for percent residue is made by heating 50 gm samples to 300 F until foaming ceases; then cool immediately and calculate results.
2 Viscosity on residue obtained from evaporation test.
3 Flash point on residue from evaporation test.

2.2 Aggregate
Gradation of mineral aggregate shall meet the following requirements:
Sieve Percent by Designation Weight Passing No. 16 100 No. 30 40-75 No. 50 4-12 No. 100 0-5
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 Bituminous Storage Tanks
Bituminous Storage Tanks shall be capable of heating the bituminous material under effective and positive control at all times to the required temperature.
3.2 Bituminous Distributor
Bituminous Distributor shall be designed and equipped to spray the bituminous material in a uniform double to triple lap at the temperature recommended by the manufacturer, at variable widths, and at readily determined and controlled rates from 0.04 to 0.2 gallons per square yard, plus or minus 5 percent.
3.3 Brooms and Blowers
Brooms and Blowers shall be of the power type.
3.4 Preparation of Surface
Immediately before applying the rejuvenator, all loose material, dirt, clay, or other objectionable material shall be removed from the surface to be treated.
3.5 Application of Rejuvenator
The rejuvenator shall be uniformly applied over the surface at a rate of 0.06 gallons per square yard, with an allowable variation of plus or minus 20 percent. Materials shall be applied at the temperature recommended by the manufacturer.
3.6 Excess Rejuvenator Material
Approved mineral aggregate shall be provided by the Contractor and shall be spread in sufficient quantity to effectively blot up any excess rejuvenator material remaining on the treated pavement surface after 24 hours.
April 2019 Section 32 01 22 Page 3
3.7 Insufficient Rejuvenator Material
When it is determined by the Contracting Officer that the actual application rate of the rejuvenator is more than 20 percent below the approved application rate, subsequent application(s) shall be made within 24 hours to ensure adequate penetration into the pavement surface.
