About this file

This is a training guide and minimum curricula requirements document for law enforcement officer certification in Tennessee, established under POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) and TCA 4-3-2019 Section 2D regulations. The document outlines mandatory training components that must be completed by candidates prior to assumption of duties within state facilities. Required training includes 24 hours of firearms instruction with proficiency demonstrations at 75% accuracy during day and darkness conditions, 8 hours of intermediate weapons training covering chemical spray and baton techniques, 4 hours of emergency medical training including first aid and CPR, 18 hours of patrol procedures covering officer survival and crime scene procedures, 4 hours of interpersonal communications, 8 hours of physical defense tactics including suspect control and handcuffing, 14 hours of criminal and constitutional law covering restraint of police powers and civil liability, 2 hours of written communications focused on police reports, 2 hours of human relations including domestic terrorism awareness, and 4 hours of criminal justice system overview. Additionally, candidates must complete 32 hours of TDOSHS training and 16 hours of on-the-job training at a post similar to their assigned location before beginning state facility assignments.

The curriculum requires instructors to be Departmental and/or POST Approved, with firearms instruction requiring either an NRA-Certified or TN Handgun Permit Instructor credential. Candidates must fire a minimum of 1,000 rounds during initial training with weapons not discharged beyond 25 yards, and demonstrate proficiency on a stress exertion course with laterally moving targets. Upon completion of initial training, officers must complete 40 hours of in-service training annually, with 8 of those hours dedicated to firearms training. The document establishes comprehensive competency standards across multiple domains including weapons handling, emergency response, legal compliance, and interpersonal skills to ensure uniformity of law enforcement training across Tennessee state facilities.
