About this file
This document is a narrative for fire protection requirements for a federal construction project to upgrade infrastructure at a Veterans Affairs medical center in Columbus, Ohio. Key requirements include modifying the existing automatic fire sprinkler system and expanding it or replacing sprinklers to accommodate a new floor plan for telecommunication closets and the main computer room. The main computer room will also receive a clean agent fire suppression system designed and installed per NFPA 2001 standards. The existing fire alarm system will be modified with new equipment, devices, appliances and pathways meeting various NFPA and VA standards. Spot-type smoke detection and new duct smoke detectors will be provided as shown in drawings. The main computer room will receive an aspirating smoke detection system per NFPA 75. A new releasing service fire alarm control unit will be installed to actuate the clean agent system.

Fire Suppression
The existing automatic fire sprinkler system will be modified to accommodate the new floor plan within each Telecommunication Closet and Main Computer Room (MCR). Modifications to the existing systems include the expansion of the fire protection systems or the replacement of sprinklers will be completed in accordance with the VA Fire Protection Design Manual, Eighth
Edition and NFPA 13. Electronic equipment areas (MCRs) will be provided with a clean agent fire suppression in accordance with NFPA 75.
Hydraulic design calculations for the sprinkler system in the Telecommunication Closets will not be required. Hydraulic design calculations for the Main Computer Room renovation must be provided per NFPA 13, the Contractor will be responsible for conducting a hydrant flow test

Fire Protection 2 before the shop drawings are developed to confirm the existing available water supply. Fire sprinkler piping will be routed, distributed, and concealed above the suspended ceilings. The sprinklers provided in Main Control Room 4A201 will be equipped with a new zone control valve assembly as required by NFPA 75.
All new sprinklers will be FM approved/UL listed. Sprinklers located in spaces that do not have ceilings will be installed in an upright orientation. Sprinklers located in spaces that do have ceilings will be installed in a pendent orientation. Pendent sprinklers will be semi-recessed with chrome escutcheons except sprinklers that are equipped with guards.
All new sprinklers located in the Main Computer Room are required to be standard-response, fusible-link sprinklers installed with mechanical guards as required by the VA Fire Protection
Design Manual.
The systems will use the existing Fire Department Connections (FDC).
All Scope of Work areas will be protected with automatic sprinkler protection unless otherwise noted on the design drawings. Hazard classification for each sprinklered area is identified on the design drawings.
The automatic sprinkler system will be tested to assure that equipment and components function as intended. Upon completion of specified tests, the material and test certificates will be submitted to the VA. After hydrostatic testing, the sprinkler system will be flushed per NFPA
13.
All piping will be steel piping. Piping 2 inches or less will be a minimum schedule 40 and all piping larger than 2 inches will be a minimum schedule 10. Seismic bracing for the sprinkler piping is required in accordance with NFPA 13.
A new clean agent fire extinguishment system will be provided in the Main Computer Room –
4A201 in accordance with an ANSI/TIA-942-B rating of 3 as defined in the Office of Information

Technology (OIT) infrastructure Standard for Telecommunications Spaces. The clean agent fire suppression system will be designed and installed in accordance with NFPA 2001. The system will be designed/sized for a total flooding application, Class C. The system will be activated by the aspirating smoke detection system going into alarm (Fire 2) or a manual release station being activated by an occupant of the room. Sprinklers installed in the Server
Room will be standard-response, fusible-link with protective cages. The clean agent system will be controlled and monitored by a new RSFACU installed within the server room. As directed by the owner the clean agent system will utilize NOVEC 1230 with a minimum design concentration of 4.5% per NFPA 2001, Table A.5.4.2.2.b.
Fire Alarm
The existing Voice-Evacuation Fire Alarm system will be modified to accommodate the new floor plan for the Scope of Work areas. All equipment, devices, appliances, and pathways will be installed to conform to VA Fire Protection Design Manual, NFPA 70, NFPA 72, and NFPA
90A. The provided system components must be compatible with the existing system. The
Scope of Work areas will use the existing Fire Alarm Control Panels (FACP) and will be expanded as needed to support the area.
Per NFPA 70, all fire alarm components will be powered by electrical panels dedicated to fire protection features. In accordance with the VA Fire Protection Design Manual, Section 7.2.E, wiring shall be installed in metal raceway. All pathways for the Fire Alarm system will comply with a Class B pathway designation and provide requisite circuit supervision. New notification appliances shall be provided as shown on the design drawings. The new appliance finish will match the existing notification appliances.
Existing manual pull stations will remain. No new manual pull stations will be provided as part of this scope of work.
The FA system will be fully tested. Upon completion of specified tests, the material and test certificates will be submitted to the VA. Record drawings, replacement parts, and warranty response time will be provided.
