Technology Leadership Opal incorporates major hardware and software technology driven developments. A completely new optical chamber design is proven in extensive testing to be more efficient, less liable to false alarm due to dust and insects and less susceptible to fault in high air velocities or back pressure. Extensive hydrodynamic modelling has confirmed the greater efficiency of the new chamber and housing shape combination. Large-scale integration of the all-new electronics, through the fully automated surface mount PCB assembly, coupled with in-line testing through the manufacturing process, laser PCB cutting along with a completely new compound of plastic offers improved quality and reliability.
All OPAL detectors are environmentally friendly and meet the WEEE and RoHS legislative requirements, minimising end of life disposal costs, and are mechanically and electrically backwards compatible with existing devices.
Product Range The family consists of six detection devices: three heat detectors (58° and 78° fixed temperature, and rate of rise), an optical smoke, a photo-thermal multi-sensor and our award winning SMART3. All six devices come with electrical short circuit isolation and the new Advanced Protocol. In addition to the new family of devices, a new installation base that makes the installation process far easier and quicker, replaces the previous versions.

OpalTM SMART2 Photoelectric / Thermal Multi-Criteria Detectors - NFXI-SMT2 The Opal multi-criteria, multi-sensor, photo, thermal detector uses thermal assistance to the core photoelectric smoke detector to give enhanced false alarm immunity and faster response to a wide range of incipient fi res. The plug-in unit combines two separate sensing elements that are managed by embedded software to act as a single unit. The Opal NFXI-SMT2 conforms to EN54-7, a 58°C fi xed temperature and rate of rise thermal assistance conforming to EN54-5. The thermal detection function combines thermistor technology with a software corrected linear temperature response. In areas where the normal daytime activities may potentially create unwanted alarms, the detector can be programmed to operate in a “heat only” mode, automatically reverting to full photo-thermal operation during unoccupied periods.
The sensing elements of the Opal NFXI-SMT2 are panel controllable so the sensitivity thresholds of each element can be changed by the panel offering the ability to customise the device for the changing use of the area it is protecting. The detector has built in short circuit isolation and two integral tri-colour LEDs that provide 360° local visual indication of the device status. The LEDs are programmable with static or blinking red, amber and green status indications available.

OPALTM SMART3 Photo, Thermal, & Infra Red Multi-Criteria Detectors - NFXI-SMT3 The Opal multi-criteria, multi-sensor, photo, thermal and infra red (SMART3) detector is the environmentally friendly alternative to the ionisation detector, a technology that is now over sixty years old. The SMART3 offers comparable speed of response to the ionisation technology for a fast fl aming fi re and is less susceptible to false alarms. It can be deployed with confi dence in locations where the main risk is from fast-developing fl aming fi res. SMART3 moves the goal posts in the fi ght against false alarms by delivering enhanced false alarm immunity. In addition to being an effective alternative to ionisation units, SMART3 offers better performance over the alternative technologies of dual angle or dual wavelength optical detectors and photo-thermal detectors.
The integration of continual monitoring for all three major elements of a fi re enables the SMART3 to respond far more quickly to an actual fi re and has the highest immunity to nuisances. Based upon the sensor signals, the program dynamically changes sensor thresholds, sensor gain, time delays, combination, sampling rates, averaging rates and, if any sensor fails, changing sensitivity of the remaining sensors as well as indicating a fault condition.
The sensing elements of the SMART3 are panel controllable so the sensitivity thresholds of each element can be changed by the panel offering the ability to customise the device for the changing use of the area it is protecting. The detector has built in short circuit isolation and two integral tri-colour LEDs that provide 360° local visual indication of the device status. The LEDs are programmable with static or blinking red, amber and green status indications available.
Note: The panel threshold should be chosen according to the specifi c environment.
The following would be Notifi er’s recommendations: Ultra-clean applications use Level 1 for pre alarm or alarm. Clean Applications use Level 1 for pre alarm and Levels 2 & 3 for alarm. Moderate environments use Level 1,2 or 3 for pre alarm and Level 4 for alarm. Harsh environments use Level 2 or 3 for pre alarm and Levels 5-6 for alarm www.notifi erfi resystems.co.ukPage 4 of 6 - 990-137_0511
OPALTM Thermal Sensors - NFXI-TDIFF, NFXI-TFIX58, NFXI-TFIX78 The Opal NFXI-TFIX58 & NFXI-TFIX78 are fi xed temperature analogue addressable sensors employing low mass thermistors and microprocessor technology for fast response and linear temperature sensing. Their linear response allows these sensors to be used to signal temperatures over the range of 58°C (Class A1S) to 78°C (Class BS).
The Opal NFXI-TDIFF uses the same thermistor and microprocessor technology to provide an alarm when the rate of rise in temperature exceeds 10°C/minute (typical) or if the temperature exceeds a threshold of 58°C (Response Class A1R). Notifi er’s Opal protocol allows it to be software confi gured to be either a fi xed 58°C, a fi xed 78°C unit or a 58°C with rate of rise device. For backwards compatibility and approval continuity, three separate versions continue to be available as separate part numbers.
The sensing elements of all three heat sensors are panel controllable through the Opal Protocol so the sensitivity thresholds of each element can be changed by the panel offering the ability to customise the device for the changing use of the area it is protecting. The detectors have built in short circuit isolation and two integral tri-colour LEDs that provide 360° local visual indication of the device status. The LEDs are programmable with static or blinking red, amber and green status indications available.

Description The PAV is an automatic float type air vent used to reduce the amount of air trapped in a pressurized fire sprinkler system. Reducing the amount of air in a fire sprinkler system is essential to help protect the system piping from the effects of corrosion that is often found at the air/water interface in the fire sprinkler system piping.
Removing as much air as possible will also have a positive effect on the performance of vane type waterflow detectors. The operation of vane type waterflow detectors can be delayed or prevented if too much air is trapped in the system piping.
The intent of the product is to vent as much air from the fire sprinkler system as possible. The PAV provides automatic venting of air as the system is being filled. Furthermore, trapped air can also be vented as the air in the system migrates to the vent location over time. The air vent will automatically close when water reaches the vent. The PAV provides a 1/2” NPT-male connection which will allow installers to pipe the outlet to a drain or other suitable location if there are concerns of inadvertent water discharge.

2. System Overview The Potter IntelliPurge® Nitrogen Purge Valve (INS-PV) is designed to work with Potter IntelliGen® Series Nitrogen Generators to effectively purge corrosive oxygen from a fire sprinkler system while maintaining adequate system pressure. Potter's IntelliPurge® Nitrogen Purge Valve is the easiest way to ensure high purity nitrogen is equally distributed throughout the fire sprinkler system. Simply install the INS-PV at the end of the sprinkler system, near a 24 Volt AC/DC electrical connection. When the nitrogen generator is in operation the INS-PV bleeds out the oxygen using one of three modes that are selectable using DIP switch configuration, or by selecting the mode on the IntelliGen® Nitrogen Generator. The three Purge Modes for the INS-PV include:
• Perfect Purge - When the INS-PV is in Perfect Purge Mode, the unit purges the air out of the system until 98% N2 purity is reached. This mode is the unit's default setting.
• Single Shot - In this mode, a Purge Time is selected and the valve automatically shuts off after that time expires.
• IntelliDry - This mode is designed for freezers or ice plug applications. After the system reaches 98% purity, it will cyclically open and close. This allows any excess, trapped moisture to be periodically purged, while still lowering the duty cycle at the compressor.
• For additional information on Purge Modes, see page 29.
In the event of a system activation, the INS-PV has a built in high pressure water shut-off valve that automatically closes when the water reaches the vent. A ball valve allows for isolation of the assembly, maintenance of strainer screen, replacement of air vent, or maintenance of the purge orifice. See Figure 1 for INS-PV System Diagram.

4. Maximum number of INS-PV devices networked to an IntelliGen Series Nitrogen Generator is 26. The maximum wire length for the network when using the recommended wire is 4000 ft. Contact Technical Support for further assistance if a longer wire length is required.
5. The PLINK network works as a Master and Slave network. The INS generator is defined as the Master.
1. The PLINK network is Potter’s propriety networking connection. It is a RS-485 network for serial communication between the Nitrogen Generator (INS Series) and its Purge Valves (INS-PV).
2. PLINK requires 3 signal lines to allow communication to and from the Nitrogen Generator and the Purge Valves.
• PL-A
• PL-B
• PL-G
3. The PLINK network shall use stranded, twisted pair wire for PL-A, PL-B, and PL-G. We recommend the unused conductors from the network cable can be pulled back and electrical taped against the outer jacket for possible future use. It is acceptable to use a single twisted pair cable for PL-A and PL-B with the drain wire being used for PL-G. Do not connect any shield to the drain wire.

NOTES:
• Wiring from the INS Series Nitrogen Generator to the INS-PVs is low voltage.
• Do not route INS-PV wiring into the high voltage wire ways.
• Do not run INS-PV communication or power wiring parallel to any high voltage wiring or conduit. Keep as much space from high voltage wiring as possible. Only cross high voltage wiring with INS-PV wiring at right angles.
• Do not coil or store excess cable in the INS-PV Cabinet. Doing so may cause communication errors or faulty readings.
• Use the knockouts below the INS IntelliGen Nitrogen Generator control board to exit the nitrogen cabinet. Keep excess wire to a minimum.
• Each INS-PV device comes with a Building Management System (BMS) connection that is a NC or NO contact. This can be wired back to a Building Management System or Fire Panel. If connected to a fire panel it should be wired as a Trouble.
NOTES:
• All INS-PV units are factory set in Perfect Purge mode. For additional purge configurations, see Programming Guide, starting on page 16.
• Wiring of the INS-PV unit for both Power and BMS notification should be done before starting the purge process. See Wiring Diagram on page 32.
1. Before applying power to the INS-PV, open the INS- PV door and observe the DIP switches located on the printed circuit board. On the S2 Switch, verify the DIP switches 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 are in the OFF position,as seen in Figure 7.
2. After confirming the DIP switches are configured correctly, close the INS-PV door.
3. Apply power to the INS-PV unit. The Power LED indicator should display a solid green LED. If not, the INS-PV is not powered ON. Check wiring of INS-PV unit.
4. To start the purging process, toggle the S1 switch into the Start Purge mode.
5. Once the purge process has started, the yellow Purge LED indicator will begin blinking.
6. The Purge Time display will display the max number of purge days, which is the maximum amount of time the unit is allowed to purge before indicating a trouble.
7. The N2 Level display will remain "--" until the first measurement is taken after 24 hrs.
8. The INS-PV is now purging. Confirm that air is escaping out of the Purge Exhaust Port. If air is not escaping, check to ensure ball valve is open and there is no trapped water before the device.
9. The INS-PV unit will take a nitrogen level reading every 24 hours. This will be indicated by the N2 Level display blinking the last reading and subsequently displaying the nitrogen level purity in the sprinkler system.
10. When the INS-PV reads greater than 98% N2 level for multiple consecutive readings, the INS-PV will close the solenoid valves and stop purging.
11. After the INS-PV unit has closed the solenoid valves and stopped purging, the unit will continue to take nitrogen purity samples from the fire sprinkler system. This is to ensure that the entire fire sprinkler system has equilibrated to 98% throughout the piping.
12. When the INS-PV unit has confirmed that the fire sprinkler system is greater than 98% N2 level, the purge process will be considered successful and the INS-PV valve will remain closed.
13. The yellow Purge LED indicator will turn solid. The Purge Time display will go blank.
14. The INS-PV will continue to monitor the nitrogen purity level of the fire sprinkler system. If the N2 level % drops below 98% for four consecutive readings, the INS-PV will go into trouble, illuminate the red Trouble LED indicator, and blink “Er” “08” Error Code on the Purge Time display. For troubleshooting and Error Code definitions see Troubleshooting Guide on page 26. If the N2 level % ever increases to 98%, the trouble will clear automatically.
5. Start Up Guide for Non-Networked INS-PV
Figure 7
