About this file

This is an attachment to a Statement of Work (SOW) prescribing the firearms qualification requirements and certification procedures for FAA contract security officers.

FAA contract security officers must complete initial firearms training and recertify at least semi-annually using a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) approved course of fire. Officers must qualify with their assigned firearm by serial number, using duty ammunition, on a recognized law enforcement range or approved alternative range under a certified firearms instructor's supervision. The COR must be notified prior to qualification to permit observation. During qualification, officers wear their complete duty gear including trouser belt, duty belt, magazine pouches, belt keepers, flashlight, handcuffs, OC foam/gel, baton with holder, pistol and holster, and ballistic gear as indicated. The DHS course of fire consists of seven stages conducted at distances of 1.5 to 15 yards, requiring 50 total rounds with a minimum qualification score of 200 points (80%) out of a possible 250 points. Stages include strong hand only shooting, two-handed shooting with reloads, body armor and cover drills, one-handed shooting, standing and kneeling positions, and barricade techniques. The contractor must provide written certification to the COR that each assigned security officer has successfully met these requirements prior to the individual assuming duties at any FAA facility, with certification available onsite for review. Both the security officer and the certified firearms instructor must sign the certification form documenting compliance and results.
