2.2.1.14 Demolition

This project requires the demolition of some sidewalks that cross the driveways to the parking lots. Any existing light poles that interfere with the new driveways shall be relocated by the Contractor as indicated by the Designer of Record. Any waste excavation shall be disposed of off-site.

2.2.1.15 Abandoned Structures and Utilities

Asphalt and concrete pieces encountered in borings [AD-2 and AD-7] indicate the possibility that debris from the previous structures may exist. New structures often perform poorly and exhibit cracking when constructed over old floor slabs, footings, or other structures. The cracking is typically located in the area immediately over the old structures, resulting from variable support conditions. The site shall be prepared to provide relatively uniform subgrade support for the proposed development, including the removal of existing foundations, grade slabs, pavements, and old fill that may be encountered in discrete locations within the building limits during site excavations. Abandoned utility pipes within the building's footprint shall be removed, so they shall not serve as conduits for subsurface erosion which could result in formation of voids or depressions, with adverse effects on foundations, floor slabs, or the proposed pavement areas. An on-site decision by the Designer of Record shall be made concerning the necessity for removal of below grade objects under the parking areas.

2.2.1.16 Entrances and Parking Lots

Proposed entrance locations, widths, and return radii are illustrated on the attached Site Plan. [The pavement design for construction of the entrances and parking facilities is included in the Geotechnical Exploration Report included in the appendices. Both flexible and rigid pavement designs are provided for use at the discretion of the Design/Build Contractor.] Handicap accessibility requirements shall follow the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) Standard for Department of Defense (DoD) Facilities.

SECTION 01 02 10.00 06 – Page 16

2.2.1.17 Sidewalks

Sidewalks shall be designed to meet the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) Standard for Department of Defense (DoD) Facilities. Sidewalks shall be constructed of Portland cement concrete, shall be a minimum of 4 feet wide exclusive of curb width, and shall be made with wire mesh reinforced concrete at a minimum thickness of 4 inches. Where walks are adjacent to the curb, the curb width shall not be included as sidewalk. Ramps for handicapped individuals shall be provided at intersections by depressing street curbs and adjacent sidewalk. Any exterior railings provided around walks, ramps, and stairs shall be [stainless steel or pre-finished aluminum]

2.2.1.18 Curbs and Gutters

Curbs and gutters constructed within the parking areas shall be concrete curbing, [6 inches wide, 1-inch radius, and sloped for the top exposed 6 inches. The remaining 12 inches shall be below the surface.]

2.2.1.19 Sanitary Sewer System

The sanitary sewer system shall consist of a minimum sized [8-inch] [ ] service lateral from the building to a new sanitary sewer manhole located just outside the building. From the new manhole, a sanitary sewer collection system, utilizing [8-inch] [ ] minimum diameter sanitary sewer pipe, shall be designed to connect to the existing infrastructure at an existing manhole. Sewer profiles shall be developed for proper description of the sewer system. [The existing sanitary sewer system is shown on the Utility Site Plan.]

The new sanitary sewer collection system shall be designed in accordance with UFC 3-240-07FA Sanitary and Industrial Wastewater Collection: Gravity Sewers and Appurtenances and UFC 3-240-09A Domestic Wastewater Treatment.

2.2.1.20 Storm Sewer System

A storm sewer system shall be designed by the Designer of Record to facilitate positive drainage of the parking facilities and general site.

The design shall be for a [10 year 24-hr storm occurrence]. All storm drainage system piping shall be reinforced concrete pipe. The building foundation drains and pavement sub-drains shall also connect to the storm sewer system. The new system shall connect to the existing infrastructure at an existing manhole, catch basin or ditch. Where design requires connection to a storm sewer between manholes, a new manhole shall be constructed over the existing pipe in order to form the junction. The existing storm sewer system is shown on the Utility Site Plan.

Final subsurface design and grading under paved or concrete surfaces shall allow positive drainage of the subgrade to eradicate the runoff as much as possible. Wrapped perforated edge drains shall be used along the edges of all proposed and new driving pavements, installed with positive drainage, and shall outlet to nearby ditch or storm sewer structures. No surface runoff shall be permitted to enter into the edge drain system, to prevent latent plugging. Where existing deteriorated pavements are to be

SECTION 01 02 10.00 06 – Page 17 rehabilitated due to poor subsurface drainage, edge drains shall be provided at the proposed pavement edge.

The existing system capacity shall be analyzed. In-line detention may be required if the existing infrastructure…
