Each detail of the memorial pays homage to Thomas Jefferson. The columns, dome, and symmetry honor Jefferson’s passion for classical architecture. Adolph A. Weinman’s bas-relief of the five members of the

Declaration Committee memorializes the writing of the Declaration of

Independence. Pieces of Jefferson’s legacy are enshrined in this building.

Architect John Russell Pope’s design of the memorial includes details that symbolize Jefferson’s role as a statesman and architect. Stone selected for the memorial signifies the geography of the

13 original colonies, including marble from Georgia to Vermont. Identifying the carefully designed details of its design illuminates the importance of this structure and the man it honors.

Tobacco and corn column capitals represent Jefferson’s interest in agricultural innovation. Jefferson owned Monticello, a 5,000-acre plantation operated by hundreds of enslaved workers.

Thomas Jefferson was a writer, politician, planter, and scholar.

How should someone memorialize such a complex person? That task fell to Rudulph Evans, who sculpted the statue at the center of the memorial.

Evans’ work depicts Jefferson looking towards the White House holding a paper scroll. A closer examination reveals details about Jefferson’s life.

The Thomas Jefferson Memorial Commission asked six sculptors to propose statue designs.

After several revisions, the commission selected the silent, standing design by Rudulph Evans.

Some say the Jefferson statue faces the US Treasury building, where a statue of Alexander Hamilton, Jefferson’s greatest political rival, stands.

The Roman Bronze Company of New York cast the permanent bronze version of the Thomas Jefferson statue in 1947.
