COMPOSITE GRAIN SIZE DISTRIBUTION CURVES FOR SAND SEDIMENTS AND
GRAIN SIZE SCALES FOR SEDIMENT
The grade scale most commonly used for sediments is the Wentworth (1922) scale which is a logarithmic scale in that each grade limit is twice as large as the next smaller grade limit. The scale starting at 1mm and changing by a fixed ratio of 2 was introduced by J.A. Udden (1898), who also named the sand grades we use today.
However, Udden drew the gravel/sand border at 1 mm and used different terms in the gravel and mud division. For more detailed work, sieves have been constructed at intervals 2 ^(1/2) and 2^(1/14). The Φ (phi) scale, devised by Krumbein, is a much more convenient way of presenting data than if the values are expressed in millimeters, and is used almost entirely in recent work.

NOTES:
1. Project: (1) Re-installation of 1,800 linear feet of TrapBag Erosion Control System. Existing, damaged TrapBags shall be removed and new TrapBags installed in place. (2) Placement of fill in existing TrapBags where fill has been lost.
2. Method: TrapBags to be filled with sand upland from Upland Sand Source locations on plan (with permission from Town/County), or using upland sand barged to Davis Park.
Sand shall be placed in TrapBag with small bulldozer and/or skid loader.
3. Total volume of sand required for TrapBag fill is 1,350 +/- cy. Upland Sand Sources contain approximately 700 cy of clean sand. Remainder shall be barged from approved upland source. Total number of TrapBags proposed is 600 bags.
4. TrapBag system to be covered with sand from an approved upland source or through beach scraping if criteria are met. Once covered, TrapBag system will be planted with American beach grass, 2" plugs 18" on center.
Snow fencing shall then be installed in zigzag immediately seaward of of TrapBag system, for protection and to trap sand for cover.
