3.1 ISS DESCRIPTION

3.1.1 ISS SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The ISS is an international endeavor being developed by NASA, JAXA, the European Space Agency (ESA), the Agenzia Spaziale Italia (ASI), the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), and the Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos). The ISS consists of pressurized modules and unpressurized systems and elements that form a human base in low earth orbit. The ISS provides science capabilities for microgravity, materials, life science research and development, earth and stellar observation as well as other technology development and demonstration by the United States (U.S.) and the International Partners.

The ISS is comprised of the United States On-Orbit Segment, (USOS), International Ground System (IGS), ESA Columbus module, JAXA Japanese Experiment Module (JEM), Roscosmos Russian Segment (RS), ASI Multi-Purpose Logistics Modules (MPLM), and the CSA Mobile Servicing System (MSS). The NASA Space Shuttle, the RS Progress vehicle, JAXA H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV), Commercial Orbital Transport Systems (COTS), and ESA Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) are cargo transportation systems for the ISS.

The ISS development is accomplished in stages using a pre-defined sequence of assembly flights. Every physical station configuration in each stage shall be verified. The assembly sequence flight numbers will be used to reference the verification reporting. Changes within an assembly stage will be considered in the verification of that stage.

3.1.2 USOS DESCRIPTION

The USOS is an earth orbiting facility which houses experiment payloads, distributes resource utilities, and supports permanent human habitation for conducting research and science experiments in a micro gravity environment. The USOS supplies the following services and capabilities to the ISS: electric power generation, storage, distribution and control; primary communications and data links to ground support facilities; environmental control and life support; thermal control and heat rejection; navigation & control; data processing; storage and transportation; crew health care; housekeeping; personal hygiene; food preparation and storage; extravehicular activity access; payload utilities; attitude control; pointing support and robotics system control.

The U.S. pressurized modules contain equipment to provide laboratory, habitation, logistics re-supply, and overall Station command and control functions. The U.S. pressurized elements include the U.S. Laboratory Module (U.S. Lab), the Node 1, the Node 2, the Node 3, the Airlock, Pressurized Mating Adapters, and the Cupola. The Nodes are pressurized, environmentally controlled elements that serve to connect the U.S. Lab, and the International Partners' modules. With four radial ports and two axial ports each, the Nodes are the building blocks for the pressurized elements for the ISS. Node 2 serves primarily as the berthing location for the Pressurized Mating Adapter (PMA)-2, the forward end of the U.S. Lab, the Columbus module, the JEM, and the Mini-Pressurized Logistics Module and HTV when it arrives at the International Space Station on its re-supply missions

The U.S. unpressurized elements include the Integrated Truss Assembly (ITA), the Unpressurized Cargo Carriers (UCC), the Photovoltaic (PV) power modules, the Control Moment Gyro (CMG), and the external central Thermal Control Subsystem (TCS), Mobile Transporter (MT), and storage and logistics carriers and platforms.

3.2 HTV DESCRIPTION

The HTV is an automated, unmanned cargo transportation system developed by the JAXA for the ISS. This system is composed of the H-II Transfer Vehicle, the HTV Operations System, the HTV Proximity Communication System [HTV Proximity (PROX) or PROX], and the HTV Laser Radar Reflector [HTV Laser Radar Reflector (LRR) or LRR]. The HTV transports pressurized and unpressurized cargos (experiment equipment and materials, system equipment, crew items, consumable, etc.) to the ISS. It can also reload nonrecoverable items from the ISS for disposal and perform destructive reentry.

The HTV is composed of the pressurized section of the Pressurized Logistics Carrier (PLC), the Unpressurized Logistics Carrier (ULC), the Exposed Pallet (EP), the Avionics Module and the Propulsion Module. The pressurized section carries the pressurized cargos. The unpressurized section holds unpressurized cargos. The unpressurized cargos are attached to the Exposed Pallet and the entire pallet is transferred to and from the HTV to ISS via the Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) and JEM Remote Manipulator System (RMS). The Avionics Module has the functions for navigation and guidance of the HTV and generates control commands to the Propulsion Module. It also has the functions for communication, data processing, and power supply to the components. The Propulsion Module receives commands from the Avionics Module and controls the trajectory and the attitude of the HTV. The HTV System is defined in SSP 50273.

4.0 HTV Verification

The HTV 1 verification matrices for SSP 50273 and SSP 50438, Part 1 defines requirement ownership as well as the Estimated Completion Date (ECD). The matrices will contain (but not limited to) the requirement, title, paragraph number, primary and secondary owners, JAXA contacts (for reference only), dependencies and comments along with verification status. The baseline versions of the matrices are contained in Appendix D and E respectively. Appendix B - glossary Cargo

The cargo is composed of the Net Cargo and configurable equipment containers. Net Cargo comprises the actual cargo delivered to the Space Station by the HTV, excluding tankage, secondary structure, piping, etc. which are included in the cargo carrier budget

Component

The component constitutes an integral part of a subsystem or system, combines various parts, devices and/or structures, and performs an independent function in operation of the subsystem or the system. Primary examples of components are actuators, valves, batteries, transmitters, receivers, multiplexers and other discrete electronic devices.

Development Model

The development model is made for the development tests that are performed to finalize the prototype model design and testing methods (e.g., collection and verification of information related to design, analysis, manufacture and testing). The development model includes engineering models, thermal models, structural models, attitude control models, and antenna radiation pattern models.

Engineering Model

The engineering model is a test article used to establish electrical and functional designs of a HTV. As it basically has the same configuration as the launch HTV, it is used as a “mockup” to develop the layout of components, assembly procedures and handling methods, as well as for electromagnetic compatibility test.

Flight Model

The flight model includes components, subsystems and systems that will be actually launched and operated in orbit. The flight model is subjected to the acceptance tests, upon completion of which systems are accepted for launching while components and subsystems can be incorporated into the flight model.

Integration

The act of mating hardware and/or software components, subsystems, systems or elements at their respective interfaces and verifying the compatibility and proper operation of the resulting entity. Integration, as used in this sense, is an integral part of the verification process.

Logistics

The art and science of management, engineering, and technical activities concerned with determining requirements, system design, and supplying and maintaining resources to support objectives, plans and operations.

Logistics Carrier The Logistics Carrier is defined as the fixed structure required accommodating the cargo.

Operational Modes

The operational modes for a component, assembly, subsystem, or system include all combinations of operational configurations or conditions that can occur in orbit, including power condition, redundancy management mode, operation mode of a component and subsystem.

Protoflight Model

The protoflight model is the model originally specified as the prototype model, which was, in whole or part, subjected to qualification tests and was re-specified as the flight model after evaluation and refurbishment as necessary. Otherwise It refers to the model previously specified for both prototype and flight purposes and required to be subjected to environmental tests that consist of various requirements of acceptance and qualification tests.

Proximity Operation

The operation of one spacecraft in the vicinity of another spacecraft with the relative positions stabilized and the attitude rate small enough to preclude the requirements for re-rendezvous.

Software

Computer programs and computer databases: As used in a Computer Based Control System (CBCS) context, “software” refers to all flight software regardless of the media on which the software resides, including software that resides on hardware devices (i.e., firmware).

Structure Development Model

The structure development model is a test article used to finalize structural design of the HTV. While it is structurally identical to the launch HTV, it is equipped with dummy parts and components that have the same weight, center of gravity and inertial efficiency. The structure development model is used for mechanical environmental tests such as vibration, shock and acoustic tests.

Subassembly

The subassembly consists of two or more parts that can be disassembled or replaced as a unit.

Subsystem

The subsystem is an assembly of two or more components using a support structure and interconnected cabling or piping required to fix the components in position. The subsystem consists of functionally related components required to achieve a specific function. Primary examples of the subsystems used in HTV are electrical, attitude control, telemetry command, structural and thermal control, and propulsion subsystems.

Validation

A set of activities performed to ensure that each product reflects an accurate interpretation and execution of requirements and meets a level of functionality and performance that is acceptable to users.

Verification

A set of activities performed to ensure that facilities, hardware and software products, and operational and acceptance procedures comply with the requirements imposed upon them.
