Building Ventilation Modification Site Survey Report
Location ID: SFK VOR Date: 04/14/2021 City, State Stonyfork, PA Surveyors: D. Williams
SITE SURVEY SUMMARY FINDINGS
This site is a 2nd generation Very High Frequency Omnidirectional Range (VOR) with Distance Measuring Equipment (DME). The SFK VOR has an existing battery string consisting of 18 KCT-660 single cell batteries (18 cells total). The batteries are rated at 660 amp-hours. The calculated maximum hydrogen evolution rate is 0.108 ft3/hr. at an equalized charge of 2.35 V per cell and a temperature of 90℉. The floor tiles and mastic are known to contain asbestos. The site is located in a relatively flat area. The area surrounding the site is gravel.
Panel board information is as follows:
o Panel board C o Federal Pacific Manufacturer (obsolete) o QO Load Center o Fused Disconnect at 60 amps o 120V 1 phase, 4 wire
SUMMARY PROJECT RECOMMENDATIONS
The building ventilation modifications include installing a new hydrogen monitoring system, exhaust fan, intake air damper, warning light, hand-off-auto switch, timer, bird screen, and insect screen. The hydrogen monitoring system will be designed to activate for 15 minutes once every 24 hours and provide one complete air change of the area occupied by the battery system. All exterior penetrations will be sealed watertight to maintain integrity of listed assembly. The new ventilation system is being installed to meet the latest edition of NFPA-1 requirements for battery room ventilation. The Hydrogen Monitoring System will operate according to the following:
1. HAND MODE
a. Manually activates the exhaust fan and intake damper.
2. AUTO MODE
a. An electrical timer will be set to activate an exhaust fan and actuated intake damper automatically for a minimum duration of 15 minutes every 24 hours.
b. When the H2 sensor senses the presence of hydrogen at 1% concentration per manufacturer recommendations, the signal will short the timer. This will override normal timer operation and initiate exhaust fan, intake damper and a warning light to implement ventilation.
The proposed equipment will require the installation of a new 20 AMP, single-pole breaker in the existing power panel (QO load center) and a new junction box for the hydrogen detector base unit. New conduit will be routed using new supports; existing supports will not be reused. All electrical work shall be performed in accordance with FAA-STD-1217H, all grounding shall be performed in accordance with FAA-STD-019F (or latest versions).
A new toggle switch will be installed in line of sight of the timer, H2 base unit, and hand-off auto switch. This disconnect switch will act as the disconnecting means for maintenance to the system as a whole (exhaust fan, intake damper, systems controls – H2 sensor, timer).
A summary of the hydrogen evolution and ventilation calculations as well as system safety factor calculations are shown below.
