Description
204.05 Add the following:
This work also includes salvaging suitable boulders from within construction limits for placing isolated or clustered boulders on selected slopes and landscaped areas.
204.02 Definitions. Add the follosing following to paragraph (c):
Topsoil refers to the uppermost soil horizon, usually 2 to 4 inches deep. It also includes live vegetation less than three feet in height, limbs less than four inches in diameter, and organic duff.
Wetland topsoil and sod refers to the uppermost 12 inches of soil horizon within wetland boundaries.
Material
204.03 Add the following to the material list:
Permeable Backfill 703.04
Construction Requirements
204.04 Preparation for Roadway Excavation and Embankment. Add the following:
Cut existing pavement vertically with wheel or saw prior to excavation.
204.05 Conserved Topsoil. Add the following:
Unless otherwise stated, remove topsoil before starting other earth disturbing operations.
The depth of topsoil to be conserved along the project limits vary with an average topsoil conservation depth of 3 inches. Unless otherwise restricted in the plans, conserve topsoil to the depth of the uppermost soil horizon as defined in Subsection 204.02(c). In impacted wetland areas, conserve the uppermost 12 inches of wetland topsoil and sod.
Nonconventional methods will be required in the removal and stockpiling of topsoil or wetland topsoil and sod. Use equipment capable of excavating small, isolated pockets of topsoil. Hand rake topsoil in areas where topsoil cannot be mechanically removed. Do not compact or drive upon topsoil during removal. Remove the topsoil to be conserved in one pass. Do not mix topsoil with subsoils.
Revised by Amendment A003
D-7 DIVISION 200
Project: MT NPS YELL 12(5), NORTHEAST ENTRANCE ROAD, SEED PROJECT
Excavate down to a depth of 12 inches to collect wetland topsoil and sod, with willows and other plants intact, from the areas designated on the Plans. Collect and stockpile wetland topsoil and sod within one operation. Excavate topsoil pieces with a minimum of 1/3 square yard to a maximum of 1 square yard to collect, transport and stockpile in one operation without breaking the topsoil piece. Keep topsoil and plant material moist and exercise care to prevent damage to bark, branches, foliage and root systems.
Stockpile wetland topsoil and sod conserved from impacted wetlands in rolls or pieces in a windrow. Water wetland topsoil and sod to ensure survivability if wetland topsoil and sod is stockpiled longer than 24 hours. Do not stockpile wetland topsoil and sods for longer than 3 weeks unless otherwise approved by the CO.
Stockpile topsoil in windrows less than three feet high along outer edge of the disturbance or in turnouts within the vicinity that it was removed. Identify removal areas and stockpiles so that the topsoil may be placed over the same general location(s) they were conserved from. If it is impractical to windrow topsoil adjacent to the disturbed area due to environmental or other concerns, remove the topsoil and stockpile at an approved location.
Place conserved topsoil and wetland sod on finished slopes upon completion of finished slopes according to Section 624.
Mulch and finish all slopes with topsoil prior to December 1 of any given year, and according to Sections 625.
Do not mulch wetland areas.
204.06 Roadway Excavation. Delete the second to last paragraph and substitute the following:
(c) Conserved roadway excavation rock material (6-inch minus). Conserve sufficient quantities of 6-inch (150-millimeter) minus material from the roadway excavation to use for finishing the roadbed. Sufficient quantities are available within the roadway excavation.
Dispose of unsuitable or excess excavation material according to Subsection 204.14. Replace shortage of suitable material caused by premature disposal of roadway excavation.
(d) Conserved boulders. Conserve the following boulder material, from sources identified under Section 105, for placement on finished slopes or landscaped areas, or stockpile as directed by the CO.:
(1) Boulders encountered in the roadway excavation ranging from 36 to 72 inches in the largest diameter, or as selected by the CO;
(2) Boulders that are sound, durable and resistant to weathering and water action;
(3) Boulders free of seams that may break into smaller pieces in the process of handling and placing;
D-8 DIVISION 200
Project: MT NPS YELL 12(5), NORTHEAST ENTRANCE ROAD, SEED PROJECT
(4) Boulders not suitable for stone masonry or rockeries (i.e., do not match color, texture or the required size); and
(5) Barrier rocks or existing landscape boulders currently located along the roadside.
Place conserved boulders from the excavation as shown in plans and at locations identified by the CO prior to topsoil placement:
Stockpile boulders individually, directly adjacent to the final placement location whenever possible. Handle materials in a manner to minimize scarring or damage to the patina and lichen surface. Set final boulder placements at the locations identified in the field by the CO.
Do not use large boulders encountered in the excavation or barrier rocks for the construction of stone items of work. Leave in the slope and construct final back slopes around the boulder or relocate the boulder to a new location directly adjacent to the limits of construction.
Minimize scarring of the surfaces to the extent practical.
Place boulders in the slope face at locations staked by the CO. Bury boulders to a depth of 1/3 their diameter. Lay boulders on firm beds and backfill as required using hand operated equipment.
204.07A Placing Backfill Material Below Subgrade. (Added Subsection).
Place backfill material according to Subsection 204.07.
204.10 Embankment Construction. Add the following to paragraph (b):
Construct the top 12 inches (300 millimeters) of the embankment with 6-inch (150-millimeter) minus material conserved from the roadway cuts.
204.11© Less than 50 percent retained on a No. 4 (4.75-millimeter) sieve. Delete the third paragraph and substitute the following:
Use compression-type or vibratory rollers. Compact each layer of material full width to at least 95 percent of the maximum density. Determine the in-place density and moisture content according to AASHTO T 310 or other approved test procedures.
204.13 Sloping, Shaping, and Finishing. Amend as follows:
Delete paragraph (a) and substitute the following:
(a) Sloping. Construct slopes to staked slope rates but flatten randomly and intermittently to simulate the irregularity of existing terrain. Sculpt slopes to produce irregular ledges, shelves, and planting pockets for vegetation by steepening the nominal slope rate in staggered locations suitable for placement of topsoil and vegetation.
D-9 DIVISION 200
Project: MT NPS YELL 12(5), NORTHEAST ENTRANCE ROAD, SEED PROJECT
Add material to the fill slopes to obtain varying and undulating contoured slope, rounding at toe of fills, and to flatten selected slopes to blend with existing landforms or promote revegetation, when shown on the plans or determined by the CO. Round tops and bottoms of all slopes, including the slopes of drainage ditches. Do not round slopes in wetlands or other sensitive areas.
Leave undisturbed boulders that are firmly in place and protruding from the slope but will be more than 10 feet from the edge of the finished pavement.
Place boulders conserved from excavations to stabilize or to landscape slopes as directed by the CO.
Do not place topsoil or mulch on slopes until authorized by the CO.
Delete paragraph (d) and substitute the following:
(d) Finishing. Remove material larger than 6 inches (150 millimeters) from the top 6 inches (150 millimeters) of the roadbed. Remove unsuitable material from the roadbed, and replace it with suitable material.
(1) AMG method. Finish roadbeds that are compacted according to Subsection 204.11(b) and (c) to within ±0.05 foot (±15 millimeters) of the design line and grade. Finish roadbeds that are compacted according to Subsection 204.11(a) to within ±0.10 foot (±30 millimeters) of the design line and grade. Finish ditch cross-sections to within ±0.10 feet (±30 millimeters) of the design line and grade. Maintain proper ditch drainage.
