About this file

This document is a Summary of Work for Phase 2, 3, and 4 of the Big Creek Greenway Boardwalk Replacement and Rehabilitation project located in Forsyth County, Georgia. The project involves multiple segments along the greenway, focusing on replacing existing timber boardwalks with new timber-decked boardwalks supported by helical piles. The work will be performed using top-down construction methods to minimize ground disturbance and protect the surrounding environment. The project includes replacing boardwalk sections at various mile markers, reconstructing end bents, performing erosion repairs, and adding approach slabs to transition between boardwalk sections. Additionally, the project encompasses improvements to the Bethelview Trailhead, including parking lot reconfiguration, ADA-compliant features, drainage upgrades, and site enhancements.

The project requires maintaining public access to the trail throughout construction, with the contractor responsible for phasing work and coordinating access points. Key improvements include installing bioretention basins, dry swales, vegetated channels, and a new storm piping network to support stormwater management. The scope also involves relocating fitness equipment, installing protective bollards, implementing landscaping, and ensuring erosion and sedimentation controls. Upon completion, the contractor must perform full site restoration, including debris removal, area restoration, and infrastructure repair. The project must comply with Georgia Environmental Protection Division, Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission best practices, and Forsyth County construction standards.

Construction will be performed using top-down methods to minimize ground disturbance and protect the surrounding environment. The work includes the full reconstruction of the end bents to tie into the new boardwalk structure.

Additionally, erosion repairs, as needed, will be completed along the shoulders adjacent to the boardwalk to restore stability and prevent future washouts. Work also includes replacement of a 36” cross pipe and raising the profile of a section of at-grade concrete trail to install a new cross pipe.

Bethelview Trailhead Summary of Work: This project consists of the construction and improvement of the existing Bethelview Road Trailhead facility located at 5120 Bethelview Road in Forsyth County providing access to the Big Creek Greenway. The work will include grading, paving, drainage improvements, and associated site enhancements to upgrade the current trailhead infrastructure. A primary requirement of this project is that public access to the trailhead must remain open and operational throughout construction, requiring the contractor to phase work and coordinate access points to minimize disruption to trail users.

The scope of work includes the demolition and removal of existing asphalt within the designated parking area, followed by the installation of new asphalt pavement to accommodate a reconfigured and restriped parking layout. The improved parking lot will feature ADA-compliant parking spaces that connect to an ADA-accessible concrete ramp system, complete with metal railings and landing pads. Additional improvements include the installation of concrete wheel stops, new pavement striping, and updated regulatory signage, including the relocation of existing ADA signs and the addition of stop, turn, and wrong-way signs to improve traƯic circulation and overall safety. A new concrete slab with a thickened edge will be constructed adjacent to the existing maintenance building.

Comprehensive drainage upgrades will be implemented as part of the project. These include the construction of bioretention basins, enhanced dry swales, vegetated channels, trench drains, and a new network of PVC storm piping—both perforated and non-perforated. These green infrastructure components are designed to support stormwater infiltration, reduce surface runoƯ, and improve water quality. Engineered soil media, underdrain systems, riprap outlet protection, and other measures detailed in the construction documents will be used to ensure long-term drainage performance.

Additional work will include the relocation of existing fitness equipment to a newly designated fitness trail area, the installation of protective steel bollards, site landscaping, and implementation of erosion and sedimentation controls in accordance with the approved Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP). All existing site features not designated for removal shall be preserved and protected. Construction must be performed in compliance with the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD), Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission best management practices, and Forsyth County construction standards.

The contractor will be responsible for maintaining safe pedestrian and vehicular access throughout the life of the project. This includes managing traƯic flow, minimizing dust, securing the work zone, and coordinating utility protection and modifications as needed.

Upon completion, the contractor shall perform full site restoration, including the removal of debris, restoration of disturbed areas, and repair of any damaged infrastructure. As-built documentation for all completed work must be submitted as a condition of final acceptance.
