About this file
This document is a culvert design calculations package prepared for Pasco County, Florida by Ayres Associates, detailing structural engineering specifications for a culvert extension project associated with the Fort King Road sidewalk construction initiative. The project involves extending an existing two-barrel cast-in-place concrete culvert approximately 500 feet south of the Old San Ann Road/Westview Avenue intersection in Dade City, Florida to accommodate a proposed six-foot sidewalk on the east side of Fort King Road. The extension measures 9 feet 3 inches in length with a 15-degree skew and consists of double 5-foot-high by 6-foot-wide concrete boxes designed to match existing culvert openings. Associated work includes installing adhesive dowels for connection to the existing structure, constructing new headwalls and wingwalls with pedestrian barriers meeting Index 515-051 requirements, and implementing scour countermeasures using riprap or gabions to address severe erosion at the northeast end of the existing culvert. The design was completed by Francis Haunstetter, P.E. (License No. 56872) and checked on February 27, 2025, with a project date of March 31, 2025, in accordance with FDOT Index 400-289 standards.
The design calculations incorporate structural reinforcement analysis utilizing #6 and #4 rebar with 8-inch spacing throughout the box culvert, headwalls, cutoff walls, and wingwall components. Total estimated concrete quantities are 40.26 cubic yards, including 17.82 cubic yards for the box structure, 9.68 cubic yards for walls, and 12.76 cubic yards for footing systems. Material specifications include Class II concrete with 3.4 ksi compressive strength, Grade 60 reinforcing steel, and design parameters based on soil friction angle of 30 degrees, modulus of subgrade reaction of 43,200 pcf, and nominal bearing capacity of 5,800 psf. Load rating analysis under LRFD conditions indicates a governing load rating factor of 1.1 for Strength I (Inventory) under HL-93 design truck loading, with the structure controlled by shear at location 18. The design accounts for 2 feet of fill height over the culvert and includes provisions for Type I or Type II connection methodologies to the existing box culvert with 2 feet of additional payment length for splicing and reinforcement lapping.

1. PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project consists of installing a sidewalk along the east side of Fort King Road south of the intersection of Old San Ann Road/Westview Avenue in Dade City, Florida. The road crosses a cast-in-place, two-barrel, concrete culvert approximately 500 feet south of this intersection. To provide room for the proposed sidewalk over this culvert, the east (upstream) end of the culvert will be extended. This calculation package provides calculations and plans for the culvert extension meeting the requirements of FDOT Index 400-289. Refer to Appendix D and E for the culvert extension calculations and plans, respectively.
The extension may be attached to the existing structure by installing adhesive dowels into the existing culvert and lapping them with reinforcement of the proposed extension. The existing headwall and wingwalls will be below the proposed groundline and can be abandoned in place.
The new headwall and wingwalls will be at approximately the same elevation as the existing. The headwall and wingwalls will be topped with a pedestrian barrier meeting the requirements of Index 515-051 to eliminate the drop-off hazard along the edge of the culvert.
The plans also provide scour countermeasures consisting of either riprap or gabions to remedy severe erosion adjacent to the northeast end of the existing culvert.
2. DESIGN CRITERIA
The extension is designed based on the following:
• Length = 9’-3” (from preliminary roadway plan)
• Skew = 15 deg. (from preliminary roadway plans)
• Double 5’-0” high x 6’-0” wide cast-in-place boxes will match the existing box openings
(based on existing culvert assessment report)
• Fill height over culvert = 2’-0” (from preliminary roadway cross-section)
• Wingwall height is the box opening plus fill height (5’-0” + 2’-0” = 7’-0”)
• Wingwall length is twice the wall height plus 2’-0” (7’-0” x 2 + 2’-0” = 16’-0”)

Box Main Reinforcing Summary
Cross Section Notes:
1. Bars shown with the same color are combined as Bar Groups.
2. Colored numbers indicate moment analysis locations.
3. Colored numbers in parenthesis indicate shear analysis locations.
4. Black numbers refer to bar designations.
Reinforcing bar size and spacing
Generally, reinforcement should be at least a #3 bar and spacing should not exceed 12 inches.
Note: Shear generally controls slab and wall thicknesses and cracking generally controls reinforcement areas
