About this file
This document includes construction drawings and specifications for grouting an existing toe drain at the BF Sisk Dam. The drawings provide details on the location of the toe drain, as well as the planned grouting sequence and general notes. Stage 1 grouting will involve grouting from the downstream end using two grout pipes and vent pipes monitored for returns. Stage 2 grouting will take place a minimum of 10 hours later through a smaller diameter pipe inserted through the first stage pipe. Notes provide requirements for equipment, materials, pressures, records and contingencies to address any grout returns in unanticipated locations. This work is part of the BF Sisk Safety of Dam Modifications, Phase I contract to address issues in select dam foundation materials through construction of shear keys, stability berms and spillway modifications to maintain water deliveries and safety.

SW180 EXISTING TOE
DRAIN GROUTING
SECTION, PROFILE, AND
DETAILS
DENVER, CO 2021-05-28
0 10' 20'
Existing drainage channel
Existing 8-inch sewer pipe toe drain, to be grouted and abandoned
Existing HDPE pipe extension to be removed
Existing weir boxes to be removed
Existing dam surface
Existing access road
Existing downstream outfall pipe to be removed to extent of excavation
GROUTING SEQUENCE
STAGE 1 GROUTING
1. Inflate Cherne Muni ball sewer plug.
2. Open all valves for grout pipes (GP) and vent pipes (VP) at the start of grouting.
3. Pump low pressure air into VP1 and monitor for blockages in all
GPs and VP2.
4. Remove blockages with low pressure water. Turn off water and air once all blockages are removed.
5. Begin grouting GP1.
6. Close VP1 when heavy grout return is observed.
7. Continue grouting GP1 until grout return is observed at VP2.
8. Close GP1 and begin grouting GP2.
9. Stage 1 grouting is complete when heavy grout return is observed from VP2 while grouting GP2.
STAGE 2 GROUTING
1. To begin a minimum of 10 hours after completion of Stage 1 grouting.
2. Deflate Cherne Muni ball sewer plug unless directed otherwise by the COR.
3. Seal the annulus between the 1-1/4" schedule 80 PVC stage 2 grout pipe and 1" PVC pipe inserted through Cherne Muni ball pass through.
4. Begin grouting 1" PVC stage 2 grout pipe.
5. Grouting is complete when:
5.1. Further grouting would require pumping at
pressures greater than 20 psi.
5.2. Based on conditions, the COR approves completion
of grouting prior to volume and pressure limits.
GENERAL GROUTING NOTES
1. Prior to grouting operations, the toe drain outfall pipe shall be cleaned with a low pressure wash to remove any sediment in the pipe invert.
2. Stage 1 and stage 2 grouting operations must be completed in a sequence with a minimum of 10 hours between activities.
3. Each toe drain pipe (left and right) will be grouted from the downstream outfall in two stages.
4. Grout pipes and vent pipes are 1" diameter schedule 40 PVC pipe.
5. Each PVC pipe is continuous, connected together using solvent-welded couplers.
6. Two air vent pipes (VP1 and VP2) are required in the bulkhead near the crown of the toe drain at the downstream outfall for Stage 1 grouting.
7. Vent pipes shall be equipped with vertical riser pipe on the downstream end and valves on the end of the risers. VP1 riser shall extend 1.0 above the downstream crown of the drain pipe. VP2 riser shall extend 2.5 above the downstream crown of the drain pipe.
8. Use a grout pressure of 5 to 20 psi for grouting operations as approved by COR.
9. Grout pipes should be installed on the toe drain invert or centralized.
Vent pipes should be installed as close as feasible to the toe drain crown as shown.
10. Grout soaked burlap is intended to provide backer for placement of the concrete plug and to prevent grout leaks.
11. The concrete plug is un-reinforced and placed as dry pack. The grout and vent pipes shall be thoroughly surrounded by the concrete plug.
12. Prior to grouting, install threaded brass valves with quick disconnect (cam-lock) connections, operated by lever handles for quick shutoff, into the exposed threaded ends of each grout and vent pipe. Plastic valves are not acceptable.
13. The grouting must be pressure-controlled using a grout manifold, see (40-D-7100).
14. The water/cement ratio of the grout mixture shall be 0.9:1 by volume. A grout fluidifier shall be added to the grout mix to improve flowability. Use manufacturer's recommended dosage rate.
15. The grout sequence presented may have to be modified in the field to fit field conditions. The COR may direct changes to the grout program to fit field conditions.
16. Record grout volumes from Stage 1 grouting and Stage 2 grouting for each toe drain outfall pipe (left and right) and submit to COR upon completion of grouting.
NOTES
1. All dimensions are in feet unless otherwise noted.
2. For survey information, see (805-208-60101).
3. For additional information regarding instrumentation, see
(60075) and (60076).
4. Toe drains consist of left and right toe drains sections. Grout left and right toe drains sections separately. Grouting may be performed from other access points, as approved by the COR.
5. If grout is observed in toe drain section separate from that currently being grouted, pause grout operations and notify COR.
COR will evaluate and approve further grouting operation.
