About this file

This document is a Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) inspection report by Total Drain Solutions for Death Valley National Park, covering wastewater system investigations at Furnace Creek and Cow Creek areas during June and September 2022. The comprehensive report details CCTV pipe inspections of gravity sanitary sewer mains and force mains, revealing significant infrastructure challenges across multiple manholes and pipe sections.

The inspections identified widespread infrastructure issues, including heavy root intrusion, scale buildup, grease accumulation, joint separation, and channeling throughout the pipe systems. Total Drain Solutions recommends extensive cleaning and rehabilitation of the pipes, specifically suggesting Cured-In-Place Pipe (CIPP) rehabilitation to restore pipe diameter and improve flow capacity. The report includes detailed photographic evidence from each manhole section, documenting the condition of pipes ranging from 4" to 8" in diameter, made of PVC and clay materials. The recommended remediation approach involves mechanical descaling, water jet cleaning, root cutting, and applying an epoxy-saturated liner to create a "pipe within a pipe" solution that repairs existing infrastructure without extensive excavation.

Re: CCTV Final Report DEVA 318717 Rehabilitate Water and Wastewater Systems at Furnace Creek and Cow Creek Areas

This report describes the CCTV inspection results of Total Drain Solutions (subconsultant of DJ&A) during their field inspections beginning June 2022 and ending September 2022.

Work Summary

June 2022

Total Drain Solution (TDS) crew worked June 6th through June 15th.

They met with DEVA-NPS staff for a pre-field vehicle and equipment inspection.

The TDS crew CCTV inspected the gravity sanitary sewer main along Old Ghost Road at Cow Creek. There was one section they could not video due to blockage in the pipe that prevented their camera from accessing the pipe.

See Exhibit A for work that was performed in the Furnace Creek Area.

See Exhibit B for work that was performed in the Cow Creek area along Old Ghost Road.

See Table 1 for summary of CCTV inspection work.

September 2022

Total Drain Solution (TDS) crew worked September 20th through September 22nd.

TDS crew accompanied DEVA-NPS field crew to Furnace Creek lagoon area. DEVA-NPS jetted the existing gravity sanitary sewer main between the lagoons and the manhole where the force main connects from Cow Creek (~2000 linear feet west of Highway 190).

The Cow Creek pump station was off while the TDS crew inspected the gravity main and the force main.

Memo November 4, 2022

At Furnace Creek, TDS CCTV inspected the gravity sanitary sewer main between the gravity manhole and the lagoon.

TDS CCTV inspected approximately 200 linear feet of the force main utilizing the manhole (described above) working upstream.

TDS CCTV inspected the cleanout access at Highway 190 prior to the force main crossing under the highway. The cleanout was exposed by NPS staff and was found to be encased in concrete so TDS could not video the section beneath Highway 190 since the cleanout pointed upstream. This cleanout was used to inspect the force main line going upstream from the cleanout.

TDS CCTV inspected the existing gravity sanitary sewer main along Old Ghost Road. This section was inspected in June by TDS and one section was blocked and could not be videoed. The NPS jetted out this line after the August 2022 storms, and NPS asked if the previously blocked section could be videoed. TDS re-videoed portions of this line.

Video Reports and Summary

Two reports were provided by TDS for the work. These reports are provided in Exhibit C and Exhibit D. A summary table with recommendations is provided in Table 1.

Day 1 – 3

After NPS shuts down the pump(s) feeding the force main pipe so as to limit water ow, TDS will mobilize CCTV equipment to pipe, then proceed to launch the manual push CCTV camera into manholes/clean outs/access points working in both directions to record/document overall condition of up to 2000’ LF of 8”pipe. Overall lineal feet CCTV’d will vary based on accessibility of manholes, clean out/access points, weather, flow of water through the pipe among other factors. The revised plan is to work from manholes/clean outs in both directions as possible.

Then work from ends of forced main upstream into the 4” force main pipe.

Also, included is CCTV investigation of up to 7 force main clean outs located safely off of highway 190. These clean outs will be opened and CCTV’d as far as the push camera will go. Any other additional forced main clean outs will require a change order for an additional day CCTV investigation work at a rate of $3500/day.

Currently all drain lines including beneath Old Ghost Road (Cow Creek) and Furnace Creek (both gravity fed from the lagoons and force main pipe from east side of highway 190) all need to be mechanically descaled and/or waterjet cleaned to remove debris, heavy root intrusion, grease, scale/grease/debris buildup to restore proper flow through these drain systems. (See individual pipe sections with photographs for detailed descriptions)

Both the Furnace and Cow Creek wastewater systems have a network of manholes and sanitary sewer lines that Total Drain Solutions evaluated as part of larger system evaluation. In general, the manholes are in good repair and the cast iron drainpipe is in fair condition at both locations. By using all existing manholes TDS was able to determine pipe buildup conditions and recommendations for pipe rehabilitation.

Upon completion of the cleaning process, pipe rehabilitation will need to take place to return pipe to regular diameter and improve flow to normal pipe capacity. Exceptions identified during the video investigation are noted below.

not opened due to its location (which could be a source of I&I). That manhole is in / near a creek and appears to be sealed closed with silicone. Video of the lines to and from that manhole and the depth of the manhole were accomplished using the camera from manholes 4 and 6 and using a locator to determine the depth.

Several manholes did show moisture. Much of the moisture appears to be seeping in around the top rings and running down the walls. There was at least one manhole that appeared to have some moisture seeping in around the bottom of the wall (MH 3). Another possible source of I&I identified was the dump station that is covered by a blue tote at this time. This was not tested but it was observed that the other dump station was full to the curb with water but the dump station with the tote was dry. Rainwater would have to go somewhere. Photos are included with the individual manhole photos between manholes 2 and 3.

Many of the manholes have a configuration called an external drop as shown here.

This is noted becasuse the external drop prevented complete investigation of some of the lines. The top arm of the piping has been sealed shut with hydraulic cement.

The largest issues noted with piping were between manholes 7 and 8 as well as manholes 16 and 17. Those issues are documented below with images and descriptions. Also included are images of each manhole (except 23 where no issues were noted but a picture wasn’t taken). Also of note, manhole 24 had a large paper clog that should be flushed and cleared prior to system recommisioning.

Manhole 14 also has an issue that may be a safety issue. A black plastic pipe of unknown source is protruding through the upper wall of the manhole and runs into the sewer line exiting the manhole.

This prevented video inspection between manholes 14 and 15. It is surmised that this is a water line that is used to flush that pipe. If that is the case, changes should be made to that set up to prevent cross contamination of the water source. This can be accomplished through the use of air gaps and backflow prevention devices. This could be a major drinking water safety issue. Photos are included in the individual manhole photos.

Both the Furance and Cow Creek wastewater systems have a network of manholes and sanitary sewer lines that Total Drain Solutions evaluated as part of larger system evaluation. In general, the manholes are in good repair and the cast iron drain pipe is in fair condition at both locations. By using all existing manholes TDS was able to determine pipe buildup conditions and recommendations for pipe rehabilitation.

CIPP Pipe Rehabilitation Process

An epoxy-saturated liner is pulled into place through existing access points, and an internal rubber bladder is inflated, pressing the epoxy against the pipe wall.

Blocked or root-intruded pipes are cleaned with tools and processes appropriate to the situation.

The epoxy cures in a few short hours, then the bladder is deflated and removed, leaving behind a clean, seamless “pipe within a pipe.”

There’s a proven alternative to pipe replacement that’s faster, less expensive and lasts just as long. Pipe lining leaves the existing pipes in place and repairs them from the inside, so you don’t have to tear out walls, floors or landscaping. When repairing drain pipes, an epoxy-saturated liner is inserted into the existing pipe and inflated, pressing the coating against the pipe walls. The epoxy cures and you are left with a clean and seamless pipe-within-a-pipe.
