About this file
This document contains a federal contract opportunity for boiler and chiller chemical water treatment services at the National Centers for Animal Health in Ames, Iowa. The Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service Midwest Area is seeking proposals for an indefinite delivery indefinite quantity contract to provide bulk chemicals, equipment, and comprehensive water treatment services for chillers, cooling towers, steam boilers, and associated systems. Interested parties must submit technical and price proposals by December 8, 2022. Award will be made to the lowest priced technically acceptable offeror. The contract will have a one year base period and four one year option periods. The work is set aside for small businesses.

Summary & Recommendations
ACTION ITEMS:
Determine why check valves and strainers on main condensate tank pumps are corroding shut every 5-6 months.
Determine location for additional conductivity probes to measure steam quality and condensate quality going into main condensate tank.
Softeners:
Softeners tested soft
Feedwater:
The boiler feedwater tested low hardness at 0.1 ppm which is allowable.
The boiler Trasar controller chemical feed is calibrated and working properly. Trasar in the feedwater was in range at 12.41 ppm.
The Trasar ORP probe is calibrated and working properly as residual sulfite was in range for all boilers.
The Trasar pH is calibrated and working properly with pH in the feedwater at 9.99 which is a little high. Will monitor to ensure it doesn’t go higher.
The boiler feedwater Trasar conductivity controller needs calibrated as it is reading lower than what the actual is. The feedwater conductivity is high at 353 umhos. Discussed with Ben and Kevin as to why this is high. One though is the blowdown heat exchanger is leaking bleeding in conductivity and pH from the boiler blowdown.
A quote was provided for conductivity calibration solution so we can calibrate the conductivity probe on the TRASAR unit.
Condensate
The condensate conductivity was higher than normal. Reviewed with Ben and Kevin to determine where the conductivity is coming from. Talked about finding a location on the boiler steam header to place a conductivity probe, like on a steam trap, to see if wet steam is the culprit.
The condensate showed zero hardness and low iron at 0.03 ppm.
Condensate pH was in range at 8.48.
The amine was in range at 11.85 ppm.
Boilers: B1, B3, B4 and B5 were online at time of testing.
Boiler 1:
The boiler conductivity is low at 2128. The conductivity probe needs a 2-point calibration but there was no calibration solution. A quote was provided to get solution.
The boiler Trasar inhibitor dosage was at 70.5 ppm and correlated with boiler cycles.
The boiler sulfite concentration was as expected at 20 ppm.
All other boiler chemistry is as expected.
Boiler 3:
The boiler conductivity was 3269. The conductivity probe needs a 2-point calibration but there was no calibration solution. A quote was provided to get solution.
The boiler Trasar inhibitor dosage was at 93.3 ppm and correlated with boiler cycles.
The boiler sulfite concentration was as expected at 25 ppm.
All other boiler chemistry is as expected.
Boiler 4:
Personal Service Report National Animal Disease Center
The boiler conductivity is in range at 3249. The conductivity probe needs a 2-point calibration but there was no calibration solution. A quote was provided to get solution.
The boiler Trasar inhibitor dosage was at 92.9 ppm and correlated with boiler cycles.
The boiler sulfite concentration was as expected at 30 ppm.
All other boiler chemistry is as expected.
Boiler 5:
The boiler conductivity is in range at 4631. The conductivity probe needs a 2-point calibration but there was no calibration solution. A quote was provided to get solution.
The boiler Trasar inhibitor dosage was at 130 ppm and correlated with boiler cycles.
The boiler sulfite concentration was as expected at 30 ppm.
All other boiler chemistry is as expected.
Cooling Towers:
Offline for the season.
Provided quote for calibration solution and new probes to be ready for season
Chilled Loop:
Offline for the season.
Please don't hesitate to call with any questions.
Thank You.
