SECTION 323113 - CHAIN LINK FENCES AND GATES
Revise this Section by deleting and inserting text to meet Project-specific requirements.
This Section uses the term "Architect." Change this term to match that used to identify the design professional as defined in the General and Supplementary Conditions.
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. Section Includes:
1. Chain-link fences.
2. Swing gates.
1.2 PREINSTALLATION MEETINGS
A. Preinstallation Conference: Conduct conference at: Coordinate with COR.
1.3 ACTION SUBMITTALS
A. Product Data: For each type of product.
B. Shop Drawings: For each type of fence and gate assembly.
1. Include plans, elevations, sections, details, and attachments to other work.
C. Samples: For each exposed product and for each color and texture specified.
Retain "Delegated-Design Submittal" Paragraph below if design services have been delegated to Contractor.
D. Delegated-Design Submittal: For structural performance of chain-link fence and gate frameworks, including analysis data signed and sealed by the qualified professional engineer responsible for their preparation.
1.4 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS
A. Product certificates.
B. Product test reports.
C. Sample warranty.
1.5 WARRANTY
A. Special Warranty: Manufacturer agrees, or Installer agrees to repair or replace components of chain-link fences and gates that fail in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period.
Verify available warranties and warranty periods for units and components.
1. Warranty Period: 15 years from date of Substantial Completion.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
Retain "Delegated Design" and "Structural Performance" paragraphs below if Contractor is required to assume responsibility for design. If not retaining, specify post size, type, and spacing in Part 2 and Part 3, or show on Drawings.
A. Delegated Design: Engage a qualified professional engineer, to design chain-link fence and gate
2.2 CHAIN-LINK FENCE FABRIC
A. General: Provide fabric in one-piece heights measured between top and bottom of outer edge of selvage knuckle or twist according to "CLFMI Product Manual" and requirements indicated below:
According to ASTM standards and the "CLFMI Product Manual," fence fabric is produced in one-piece widths from 36 inches (914 mm) to 12 feet (3.66 m).
1. Fabric Height: As indicated on Drawings.
Retain "Steel Wire for Fabric" Subparagraph below for steel wire fabric mesh. CLFMI limits wire diameter in last option below to residential applications, but other standards do not make this distinction.
2. Steel Wire for Fabric: Wire diameter of 0.192 inch (4.88 mm).
CLFMI limits first option in "Mesh Size" Subparagraph below to residential applications, but other standards do not make this distinction.
a. Mesh Size: 2 inches (50 mm).
Retain "Aluminum-Coated Fabric," "Zinc-Coated Fabric," or "Zn-5-Al-MM Aluminum-Mischmetal-Coated Fabric" Subparagraph below for metallic-coated steel wire fabric.
b. Zinc-Coated Fabric: ASTM A392, Type II, Class 1, 1.2 oz./sq. ft. (366 g/sq. m) with zinc coating applied before weaving.
Retain "Polymer-Coated Fabric" Subparagraph below for polymer coating over metallic-coated steel wire fabric.
Retain first subparagraph below for fabrics that are metallic (zinc) coated before weaving, especially for fence projects located in corrosive environments. Delete if fabric is zinc coated after weaving.
c. Coat selvage ends of metallic-coated fabric before the weaving process with manufacturer's standard clear protective coating.
Retain "Aluminum Wire Fabric" Subparagraph below for aluminum wire fabric mesh. Mill finish is standard.
2.3 FENCE FRAMEWORK
Line post selection based on wind speed is described in CLFMI WLG 2445.
Copy "Posts and Rails" Paragraph below and re-edit for each product.
Insert drawing designation. Use these designations on Drawings to identify each product.
Options in this article are not identical to all framework types in the "CLFMI Product Manual." Round steel pipe dimensions vary in ASTM F1043 and ASTM F1083.
A. Posts and Rails: 2x4 and 2x8 wood studs for framework, including rails, braces, and line; terminal; and corner posts. Provide members with minimum dimensions and wall thickness on the following:
1. Fence Height: As indicated on Drawings.
Retain "Line Post" Subparagraph below if size is critical. According to ASTM F1043, first four options are for both types of round pipe, fifth option is for Schedule 40 pipe only, and last three options are for roll-formed-steel C-section shapes.
Always retain first option for intermediate rails in "Horizontal Framework Members" Subparagraph below if fence height is 12 feet (3.66 m) or higher. According to ASTM F1553, all fences should have top framework, either a rail or tension wire. Bottom horizontal members enhance security; use them also on any fence constructed with slats. Consider retaining last option below or, alternatively, specify tension wire.
2.4 SWING GATES
Industrial swing gate frames and dimensions determine gate-post material, size, and weight according to ASTM F900 for gates up to 24 feet (7.3 m) wide. If default values do not suit Project, insert sizes and minimum weights of components.
A. General: ASTM F900 for gate posts and double swing gate types.
1. Gate Leaf Width: 36 inches (914 mm).
B. Pipe and Tubing: 2x4 wood stud framing.
C. Frame Corner Construction: assembled with corner fittings.
Retain "Extended Gate Posts and Frame Members" Paragraph below if barbed wire is retained and support wire is strung to attach coiled wire. Delete if not using barbed wire or if barbed wire arms are used in lieu of extended frame members.
D. Hardware:
1. Hinges: 180-degree inward swing.
Generally, retain "Latch" or "Lock" Subparagraph below.
2. Latch: Permitting operation from both sides of gate with provision for padlocking accessible from both sides of gate.
3. Lock: Manufacturer's standard internal device.
Retain "Padlock and Chain" Subparagraph below for padlocks and chains if not Owner furnished.
4. Padlock and Chain: Coordinate with COR.
5. Closer: Manufacturer's standard.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Do not begin installation before final grading is completed unless otherwise permitted by Architect.
3.2 CHAIN-LINK FENCE INSTALLATION
A. Install chain-link fencing according to ASTM F567 and more stringent requirements specified.
Retain "Post Excavation" and "Post Setting" paragraphs below for locations with rock-free, stable soil conditions. Revise if conditions include unstable or rocky soils. See ASTM F567 default requirements.
Retain options in "Terminal Posts" Paragraph below to suit Project. Where fencing changes direction by 15 degrees or more, at abrupt changes in grade, and for long stretches of fence in the range of 300 to 500 feet (91 to 152 m), manufacturers may recommend locating pull posts with braces at both ends of fence.
Revise "Line Posts" Paragraph below for unusual load conditions. Posts are usually spaced 10 feet (3 m) o.c.
B. Line Posts: Space line posts uniformly at 96 inches (2440 mm) o.c.
Retain "Tension Wire" Paragraph below if applicable.
Fabric in "Chain-Link Fabric" Paragraph below is usually placed outside framework. Last option complies with ASTM F567 and is usually specified; however, tennis courts require 1 inch (25 mm) between finish grade and bottom of selvage.
Retain "Privacy Slats" Paragraph below if applicable.
3.3 ADJUSTING
A. Gates: Adjust gates to operate smoothly, easily, and quietly, free of binding, warp, excessive deflection, distortion, nonalignment, misplacement, disruption, or malfunction, throughout entire operational range. Confirm that latches and locks engage accurately and securely without forcing or binding.
B. Lubricate hardware and other moving parts.
