March 2012 Revision 02087-1
SECTION 02087- REMOVAL OF BIRD AND BAT DROPPINGS
Part 1 - GENERAL
1.1 CONTROL AREA
A. The control area includes the following:
Describe work area and indicate on project drawings
B. Related work specified in other sections:
Section 01546, "Safety and Health," applies to all work covered by this section.
1.2 SUBMITTALS
Contractor’s plan of action: to be approved prior to the commencement of work.
A. Work practices and dust control measures to eliminate or reduce dust generation during the removal.
B. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for any products used on site.
1.3 CONTRACTOR RESPONSIBILITY
The contractor shall assume full responsibility for the protection of workers, visitors to the site, and persons occupying areas adjacent to the site.
1.4 SEQUENCING
Removal of droppings must be done in conjunction with other environmental abatement work as appropriate and prior to work of other trades.
Part 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 EQUIPMENT
A. Equipment, protective clothing and respirators required for the execution of this contract shall comply with all applicable Federal, State, and local regulations, including but not limited to: 29 CFR 1910.132 and 29 CFR 1910.132.
March 2012 Revision 02087-2
B. At a minimum, workers shall wear disposable coveralls including disposable shoe coverings and gloves. Workers shall wear NIOSH-approved full face respirators with combination high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters capable of excluding particles of 0.3 micron size. Chemical cartridges for chlorine are required if a chlorine-based disinfectant is used.
Part 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 WORK PROCEDURES
A. Isolate the work area by sealing off all openings and fixtures, including but not limited to heating and cooling system air intakes and doorways. Cover all non-removable items and equipment in the work area with plastic sheeting taped securely in place.
B. Prior to removal, saturate the contaminated area. Small areas can be wetted with a soapy water mixture/water with a surfactant. Alternatively, the contractor may use a chlorine-based disinfecting solution, used at the manufacturers’ suggested maximum concentration (requires pre-approval of the product’s MSDS). Apply solution using a low velocity sprayer to prevent debris from becoming airborne.
Use an application rate to completely saturate the material. If necessary, spray the area several times to fully saturate. The disinfectant solution should be sprayed intermittently during removal to keep debris saturated. Prevent drainage of gross debris into the building drainage system.
C. Use manual scrapers, shovels, and the like for gross debris removal. Bag the droppings in doubled, 6-mil plastic bags. Close bags securely and transport to a landfill for burial.
D. An acceptable alternative method is the use of an industrial HEPA vacuum to remove the debris. Truck-mounted or trailer-mounted HEPA vacuum systems are recommended for buildings with deep accumulations of bat or bird droppings, feathers, carcasses, etc.
3.2 CLEAN-UP AND DISPOSAL
A. Disposable coveralls shall be placed in plastic bags prior to exiting work area.
Provisions for showers shall be available in the event coveralls are torn or breached. It is recommended that workers shower, thoroughly washing their hair, at the end of each work shift.
B. After gross debris has been abated, if conditions allow, the surfaces shall be final cleaned using a water stream. If this is not feasible a final application of chlorinated disinfectant shall be applied.
March 2012 Revision 02087-3
C. Air sampling, surface sampling, or the use of any other sampling method intended to confirm cleanliness is unnecessary in most cases. However, before a removal activity is considered finished, the cleaned area should be inspected visually to ensure that no residual dust or debris remains. The Contracting Officer or his/her designated representative will inspect the work area prior to approval of decontamination work.
