About this file
This is Volume 6 (Appendix G) of a Geotechnical Information Report (GIR) for the Rough River Dam Safety Modification Project Phase II, which contains analysis of downstream filter materials for the stilling basin abandonment. The document, dated December 20, 2024, was prepared by the US Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District under solicitation number W912QR25R0016.
The technical content focuses on perviousness and migration calculations for multiple filter layers to be placed in the abandoned stilling basin. The design specifies KYTC C-33 concrete sand at the base, followed by KYTC No. 57 stone, then KYTC No. 23 stone, and finally engineered fill (shot rock) on top. The analysis demonstrates that both the C-33 sand/No. 57 stone interface and the No. 57/No. 23 stone interface meet USACE and FEMA requirements for perviousness and particle migration prevention, with calculated values falling within acceptable ranges for dam safety filter design.

The various filter layers satisfy the requirements for particle migration and perviousness.
Check partical migration and perviousness for draped filter materials to be placed in abandoned stilling basin Multiple layers of graded material will be placed, ranging from C33 concrete sand at the base, followed by KYTC No. 57 stone which will be overlain by KYTC No. 23 Stone which will utimately be overlain by engineered fill (shot rock)
Gradations were all obtained from KYTC design specifications. Since the materials that are being compared are all sand and gravel with less than 15% fines, simplified calculations based on the d85 and d15 values of of the relevant base and filter materials were utilized.
