About this file
This technical specification document (Section 32 31 13.54) details requirements for installing a buried chain-link fence for rodent control along levee slopes in the Pajaro River Flood Risk Management Project Reach 6. The specification covers materials, installation procedures, and quality control for a chain-link mesh fabric barrier designed to prevent rodent burrowing. Key technical requirements include using 1-inch mesh size, 9-gauge galvanized steel wire, installation by trenching and embedding the fabric to a specified depth with an outward horizontal extension, and ensuring a maximum gap of 1/4 inch between fabric sections. The chain-link fence must be installed at the toe of the levee slope, secured with stakes or rebar pins, and backfilled with select fill according to levee construction specifications, with different backfill approaches for waterside and landside slopes.

1.5 QUALITY CONTROL
Submit certificates of compliance in accordance with the applicable reference standards and descriptions of this section for the following:
a. Zinc Coating
b. Chain Link Mesh Fabric
c. Fasteners/Hog Rings
Work shall be performed under the supervision of a qualified contractor experienced in chain-link fence installation. Inspections shall be conducted at key installation phases, including trenching, material placement, and backfilling.
1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
Deliver materials to site in an undamaged condition. Store materials off the ground to provide protection against oxidation caused by ground contact.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 CHAIN LINK FENCE MATERIALS
Chain link mesh fabric shall be 1 inch mesh size (the measured distance between two parallel sides), 9 gauge wire. The chain link mesh fabric shall consist of steel wires woven together to form a diamond-patterned mesh. The chain link fabric mesh shall be manufactured from the highest quality galvanized wire. In accordance with ASTM A392-Class 1. The fabric shall be stretched taut and free of sag. The end of the mesh fabric shall be closed look for each roll without any open-ended wires.
2.2 FASTENERS/HOG RINGS
Hog rings shall be galvanized steel, minimum 9 gauge, and placed per manufacturer's and specification requirements. Tension wire shal be 7 gauge galvanized steel and attached along connections.
2.3 BACKFILL MATERIAL
Backfill material shall meet the requirements of select fill as outlined in Section 35 41 00 LEVEE CONSTRUCTION.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 PREPARATION
Verify the levee embankment has been constructed to the lines, grades, and cross sections indicated on the drawings.
3.2 EXCAVATION AND TRENCHING
Excavate a trench at the toe of the levee slope as shown on the drawings.
3.3 INSTALLATION DETAILS OF CHAIN LINK MESH FABRIC
Chain link mesh fabric shall conform to the surface of the levee with a
Final Submittal SECTION 32 31 13.54 Page 2 Issued for Construction maximum gap of 1/4 inch . Tie adjacent rolls or panels with hog rings with no bumps along the joints at the spacing shown on the drawings. Secure the mesh to the slope using stakes or rebar pins to meet the minimum gap requirement from the levee slope to mesh .
3.4 BACKFILL AND COMPACTION
Backfill and compact anchor trenches with select fill as outlined in Section 35 41 00 LEVEE CONSTRUCTION. Chain link mesh fabric. Backfill chain link fabric mesh on waterside slopes with rock slope protection as outlined on the drawings and as outlined in Section 35 31 19 ROCK SLOPE PROTECTION. Backfill chain link fabric mesh on landside slopes and slopes not designated for rock slope protection with select fill as outlined on the drawings and as outlined in Section 35 41 00 LEVEE CONSTRUCTION.
3.5 QUALITY CONTROL
Inspect the chain link mesh fabric for gaps, unsecure sections or loose backfill. Submit a final as-built drawing reflecting the installed barrier location and depth
