1.2 Equipment Description

The COP has some internal components in the Rack. This area describes each device and how to proper have them plugged in each other.

1.2.1 Equipment Characteristics, Capabilities, and Features

Carefully lower the COP station from the NOTL or AARP trailer with a forklift. Make sure the forklift

Operator User Manual for the Operating of FLEXTRAIN Common Operating Picture (COP) operator is licensed. Once lowered, move the COP rack station (2/4 man lift) and transit cases into the designated ESC building or trailer. Once inside the building, arrange the COP rack in accordance with guidance from the ESC personnel. The NOTL, with help from the FAE or Network Operations personnel will designate the location of the COP station for easy access to power and to lay network cables. Prior to installation, perform an inventory of the COP rack and transit case contents to confirm that the serial numbers and quantity matches what’s currently on the included Form 2062 hand receipt.

1.2.1.1 Functions of Transit Case and Contents

Each COP station will be shipped with one transit case and a Form 2062 with current inventory of that COP station. The transit case will contain two monitors, one mouse, one keyboard, one projector, power and monitor cables. Other accessories may be included, depending on mission requirements. Please check with the NOTL or FAE for guidance.

1.2.1.2 Functions of Base Computer

The Base computer is a rack-mounted, server-grade computer running a custom version of Linux.

Installed on each Base computer is software package called “Rigel” which lets the COP operator to observe live, instrumented lanes. The computer itself supports dual monitors and a projector to facilitate the tracking picture of live training events.

1.2.1.3 Functions of Base Computer

a) The base computer is the main system you will be using.

To power on:

i) There are two power buttons on different versions on this server

1) There is a power switch in the middle section, next to an identical switch that resets the computer

2) Or there will be a small grey button at the bottom of the middle

b) You will need to enter the Hard Drive password to start loading the Operating System (OS - Red Hat Linux). You will receive this password from the NOTL

c) Once the OS loads, you can log into the computer.

d) How to use the software will be explained in detail in the next section.

1.2.1.4 Functions of UPS

Sitting below the Base computer is a rack-mounted uninterruptable power source (UPS). The UPS provides battery backup for the COP computer rack and connected peripherals in the event of a power outage. With a run-time of between 20-30 minutes, the UPS allows the COP operator to safely shutdown the computer if power to the COP has not been restored in time.

1.3 Principles of Operation

The COP is the primary consumer of live tracking data coming from downrange. Data from players on lanes are sent through the relay towers back to the Network Operations Center (NOC). Servers within the NOC will log the players’ name, rank, call sign, GPS position and MILES events. During the issuing of Flextrain equipment, XCTC personnel will assign 3D avatars to each player whether they’re dismounted individuals or vehicles. The COP can access this live data via its network connection to the NOC.

Sitting at each COP station is a COP operator. The COP operator’s job is to observe the live exercise as it’s unfolding for a common operations picture of the current operations.

2. Operating Instructions A pre-requisite to operating and setting up the COP station is basic computer skills. During setup and initial training, the operator should be supervised by the NOTL or FAE.

2.1 Description and Use of Operator’s

Controls and Indicators

i) The software package containing 3D data on the COP is used to show training.

ii) Make sure that the pictures appear on the

Projectors properly. Consult your team lead or a FAE if these displays do not properly work.

2.2 Operation under Usual Conditions

Under usual conditions, the COP station will operate in an air-conditioned building for approximately 1-2 months. During the approximately 2 weeks setup period at an XCTC event, the COP station usually operates between 9-12 hours and is turned off in the evening. Once exercise commences and there is live tracking, the COP will be on 24/7 with the exception scheduled maintenance.

3.1 Troubleshooting

a) General Troubleshooting guide: Cabling, Power, Reboot (CPR)

i) Some of the most common problems and quickest fixes can be caused by cabling, power, or just rebooting the system. Make sure that all the cables are connected properly and secured correctly. Loose or disconnected cables usually tend to hide in piles of cable (“rat’s nest”). If the device needs power, be sure to check that the power cord is fully plugged in on both ends. If an emergency arises contact a FAE or Systems Lead immediately.

ii) If you cannot locate the issue within 5 minutes, contact the lead or FAE, get out a pen and paper and write down what happened and everything you do. This will help diagnose the issue much quicker when the lead or FAE arrives.

b) Broken or Malfunctioning Equipment

i) If you find a piece of equipment that is broken or not functioning correctly contact the lead or a FAE for replacement or troubleshooting tips. Below are some things that you can attempt in waiting for the lead or a FAE to arrive.

c) Software Troubleshooting

i) If something that is not supposed to happen in the software, including: freezing, locking up, or not displaying properly, contact a FAE and your lead immediately. Write down what happened. If the lead or FAE is not in the area to look at the machine, restart the software. If the software cannot be closed, restart the computer.

d) Power Issues

i) If the generator fails to power on or spontaneously shuts down, contact the systems lead or a FAE, do not try to fix it yourself, a generator tech will be sent out to fix the problem.

ii) If the UPS does not stop beeping, this means that it is not connected to a power source.

Make sure that the power cord of the UPS is plugged into the Power Distribution box; reset the socket that it is plugged into. If that still does not work, try changing what socket it is plugged into. Make sure that the Power Distribution Box is receiving power from the generator.

iii) If the UPS is on but none of the rack equipment is powering on, check that they are plugged into the power strip and that the power strip is plugged into the UPS. Also make sure that the power switch is turned on. If the monitors do not turn on, check the power connections and check if the power strip is also turned on and plugged in.

e) Projector

i) If no 3D is showing up on the projector. Then double check that the HDMI cable and DVI adapters are fully seated in the labeled cables out of the back. If they are fully seated and no video is being output, try a different HDMI cable. Check to see if the computer’s display settings are properly set. The Base computer should be set to Extend while the Base computer display settings should be set to “Duplicate”.

3.2 Maintenance Procedures

3.2.1 Wiring Diagrams

a) Overview

i) Below is the overview of a typical COP rack’s wiring. Each section after this one will have the cut out of each portion: Power. They will all have a guide on where the cables plug into each device.

Below is Table 2 COP Cable Wiring that says where the output of a device is plugged into another device. Some cables plug devices directly into each other, while others go through an adapter or extension. Any extension cables coming from the video matrix should be labeled.

Output Adapter Input Base Computer 1 Direct Monitor (Base Control) Base Computer 1 Direct Projector Input 1 Table 2 COP Cable Wiring

Operator User Manual for the Operating of FLEXTRAIN Common Operating Picture (COP)

b) Power

i) Power comes from the generator or building and is routed to the COP. You will be plugging in the UPS from the COP rack into this power source. The GFCI outlets are sensitive to power surges, so make sure everything on the UPS is powered down before plugging it in.

ii) Below is Table that says where each device is plugged into. Most of these are standard “D” power plugs, but some of the accessories have their own power adapters. The number of the outlet does not matter when plugging these devices in, only to what device matters.
