Task Group Instruction for USS HIGGINS (DDG-76) AFT Intake Inspection, Repair, and Preservation

This Task Group Instruction (TGI) is a naval shipyard work directive for performing inspection, repair, and preservation activities on Engine Room No. 2 Gas Turbine Module (GTM) and Ship Service Gas Turbine Generator (SSGTG) No. 2 dirty side intake systems aboard USS HIGGINS (DDG-76). The contractor work runs from June 29, 2026, through December 8, 2026, with preparation and approval completed on April 30, 2026. The work encompasses multiple intake locations including port and starboard dirty and clean side intakes, intake trunks, and related structural components identified by specific compartment numbers.

The required work tasks include conducting visual inspections of current ship conditions; power tool cleaning to bare metal (up to 600 square feet) in accordance with Surface Preparation Specification SSPC-SP 11; additional visual inspections of cleaned surfaces for structural integrity; ultrasonic thickness measurements at up to 100 locations per area; and specified repairs comprising base metal buildup (50 square inches total), removal and installation of new deck/overhead/bulkhead sections (15 square feet total), removal and installation of new stiffeners (10 linear feet total), and vee-out and weld repairs of cracked intake welds (4 linear feet total). All repairs must be followed by surface grinding, coating per specification 009-032, and air hose testing of new welds with zero allowable leakage. A critical special requirement mandates fabrication and staging of a non-flammable closure due to the work affecting fire zone boundaries. Supporting services provided by SRF-JRMC include crane rigging, electrical and mechanical utilities, safety inspections, gas-free inspections, QA inspections, and on-site engineering support.
