CLOSED LOOP SYSTEMS
I. CLEANING CLOSED LOOP SYSTEMS SHALL BE PERFORMED ONCE DURING THE
PERIOD OF THE CONTRACT
REQUIREMENT:
Adding cleaning chemical solution shall be performed by a certified technician with a minimum of five years experienced.
Add recommended cleaning chemical solution to treat corrosion, microbiological growth and corrosion fouling deposits and break down scales deposit. Circulate the recommended quantity of chemical solution into the system, the required length of time of circulation shall be determine by the Technician in charge or the manufacturer recommendation until the internal of the pipe is completely treated and clean.
Drain closed loop system and flush with fresh water to completely remove all cleaning solutions in the system (repeat as necessary).
Add Polymers treatment in the closed loop system for internal coating. Follow manufacturer, Industrial standard and UFC guideline for Corrosion and Polymeric Coatings application
Clean, neutral closed loop water system need never be drained except in an emergency or due to necessary servicing of the equipment, flushing and draining necessitates adding of make-up water, which may cause corrosion, scale and other problems.
Chemical treatment added into the system shall not have a negative impact on pump seals, valve seals and gasket etc.
A closed loop system that contain acid will usually have one or more of the following symptoms:
1. Gas formation (air troubles)
2. Pump seal and gland problems (water leaking)
3. Air vent valves sticking or leaking.
4. Frequent relief valve operation.
5. Pipe joint leaking.
6. All water leaks shall be repaired.
The contractor shall submit monthly pH level testing; record of pH level reading and quantity of chemical added into the system loop shall be submitted to the Government in accordance with Section F.

CLOSED LOOP SYSTEMS
II. WATER TREATMENT FOR ALL HOT AND COLD WATER CLOSED LOOP SYSTEMS
REQUIREMENT:
Adding chemical treatment solution to neutralize the acid, micro biocides and other chemical treatment in the closed loop system shall be performed by a certified technician with a minimum of five years experienced.
The system must be thoroughly cleaned before effective control chemical treatment such as corrosion inhibitors etc., can be added.
Clean neutral closed loop water system need never be drained except in an emergency or due to necessary servicing of the equipment. If the system is drained for repair, a liquid chemical control treatment shall be added to maintain the recommended pH level.
Monthly pH level testing shall be required and recorded for pH level and quantity of chemical added into the system loop. Recorded reading taken shall be forwarded to the Government for review.
Level of pH shall be monitored weekly for the first two months, once system pH loop reading has been stabilize, then monthly pH testing shall be performed.
Test result with a pH reading below recommended level indicates that the system water contains acid and shall be treated immediately.
The system loop shall be treated to bring the pH level back to the recommended 8 to 9 pH level.
Chemical added into the system shall not have a negative impact on pump seals, valve seals and gasket etc.
Existing shunt feeders shall be clean and tested for operation prior of used.
III. REFER TO UFC 3-240-13FN FOR ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTION AND INFORMATION ON
COLD AND HOT WATER CLOSED LOOP TREATMENT.
IV. BUILDINGS WITH HOT AND CHILL WATER CLOSED LOOP SYSTEMS (see reference-
1502000-16)
Notes: On systems using ethylene glycols, an inhibited non-automotive grade should be used (the recommended pH level is 8-10). When using ethylene glycols, a supplemental inhibitor package of sodium nitrate and borate at startup. Manufacture’s recommendations may also be followed.
